The martial art of Tang Soo Do is relatively modern. However, its basis, the Korean art of Soo Bahk Do, dates back many centuries. Tang Soo Do is a composite style, being 60% Soo Bahk Do, 30% northern Chinese and 10% southern Chinese. Our kicking techniques, for which Tang Soo Do is unsurpassed, are based on Soo Bahk. Soo Bahk was first developed during the Silla Dynasty (668-935 AD), but enjoyed its flowering during the Koryo Dynasty (935-1392 A.D>).
Tang Soo Do is both a hard and soft style, deriving its hardness in part from Soo Bahk and its soft flowing movements from the northern Chinese systems.
The man who developed Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan, Grandmaster Hwang Kee, is a martial arts prodigy, having mastered Tae Kyun (another Korean system not related to Tae Kwon Do) and Soo Bahk Do at the age of 22. At that time, (1936), he travelled to northern China. There he encountered a Chinese variation of martial artistry called the Tang Method and developed what was to be known as Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan.
Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan (a brotherhood and school of stopping inner and outer conflict and developing virtue according to the way of the worthy hand) is not a sport. Though it is not essentially competitive, it has great combat applications. It is a classical martial art, and its purpose is to develop every aspect of the self, in order to create a mature personality who totally integrates his intellect, body, emotions, and spirit. This total integration helps to create a person who is free from inner conflict and who can deal with the outside world in a mature, intelligent, forthright, and virtuous manner.

History
It could be said that martial arts originate from the dawn of human existence, when one's very survival depended on the ability to defend oneself. In primitive times all cultures used traditional unarmed combat skills when fighting tribal wars and as self-defence against animal attacks; these methods of self-defence eventually developed into unique hand and foot skills. However, the origins of Tang Soo Do as we know it can be traced to the period of the Three Kingdoms in Korea, Shilla 57 BC - 935 AD, Paekjae 18 BC - 660 AD, and Koguuryo 37 BC - 668 AD. Many relics of Tang Soo Do (Soo Bahk Kee) from this era survive to the present day. One of the best known examples is the Koguryo wall painting depicting martial arts, which is at least 1500 years old. It was found in Jip Han Yern, on the lower part of the Ap Lok river which forms part of the border between Korea and China. Koguryo murals of the royal tomb reveal the lifestyle of the time; one of the murals excavated during the period 1935-40 depicts a scene in which two warriors are engaged in a hand to hand fight in Tang Soo Do. Many Shilla Buddhist sculptures, depicting monks practising martial arts, also survive in Korea. The guardians carved at the entrance of Sokkuram Grotto display postures similar to those found in Tang Soo Do.

Soo: Hand Do: Way Tang: Kara Soo: Te Modern Moo Duk Kwan as a style was founded on November 9, 1945 in Seoul, Korea by Hwang Kee, with "Tang Soo Do" ( Hwa Soo Do) as the art, and the school or style being "Moo Duk Kwan." Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan (As with almost all other styles) is a composite of many other disciplines: Tae Kyon (Kicking), Various Japanese styles (i.e.: Shotokan & Okinawan styles), and forms, hand techniques, and personal research by Hwang Kee, the systems founder. Tang Soo Do has a varied and interested beginning starting out as Hwa Soo Do (Way of the Flowering Hand), then Tang Soo Do to gain acceptance in Japanese influenced Korea, and incorporated as Su Bahk Do. As with many Korean arts, Tang Soo Do is said to have its roots in the Moo Yei Do bo Tong Ji, which is an ancient martial arts book found in Korea but written in Chinese. HISTORIA DEL TANG SOO DO.

Born in Ceylon, Master Chris Austin was first introduced to the martial arts, through wrestling, boxing and Judo. In the early 1970s he regularly travelled to Irian Jaya on business, where Korean tunnelling experts were employed at the Copper Mines. This is where Master Austin first became involved in Tang Soo Do training. In 1982 he began offering classes at the Rapid Creek Dojang in Darwin. The school was named 'Darwin Karate- Kai'. The emblem used was the clenched fist with the knotted belt as a circle around the fist. This denoted the control of the five senses, the fist being justice and honour and the knotted belt a symbol of achievement. His eldest son Michael Austin (a 2nd Dan with the Japanese Martial art, Shotokan in Melbourne) joined him soon after. At this time Darwin Karate-Kai came under the umbrella of Chief Tang Soo Do Instructor Master K S Shin in Melbourne. In approximately 1985, Master K S Shin broke away from Grandmaster Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee who founded Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan in 1945. With the departure of Master K S Shin, the Australian Association fragmented, so Master Chris Austin formed the Australian Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation (NT), which was formally incorporated on the 14th September 1987 by the Commission for Corporate Affairs. Master Chris Austin remained loyal to Grandmaster Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee and his Son, Master H C Hwang and became the Chief Instructor for Australia for Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan. Many instructors and students have benefited because of Master Chris Austin's loyalty and decision to remain with the Founder.

Pacific Karate - Tang Soo Do History
During the 4th century A.D., wandering monks from China introduced Buddhism to Korea. Some of the monks were accomplished martial artists, as indeed they had to be for their own safety. There are reliable records of them teaching lay people martial arts.
The Silla Dynasty (A.D. 668 - 935) was a period when the martial arts expanded rapidly in Korea. The Kingdom of Silla was one of the three Kingdoms in Korea. It occupied the south eastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The Kingdom was notable for the military prowess of its young warrior class, the Hwa Rang. The five basic priciples of Tang Soo Do are derived from the principles of these elite warriors.
At the beginning of the Yi Dynasty (A.D. 1390 - 1907), the National Martial Arts Manual, "Moo Yei Do Bo Tong Ji", was published, and the term "Soo Bahk Do" ("way of hand fighting") became widely used. During the occupation of Korea by Japan (1907 - 1945) the practice of native martial arts was prohibited. This prohibition forced many Korean Soo Bahk Do Masters to emigrate, or to practice secretly.
Following the liberation of Korea in 1945, the Moo Duk Kwan ("Institute of Martial Virtue") and four other Martial Art Schools were formed. The Moo Duk Kwan and Chi Do Kwan later formed the Korean Soo Bahk Do Association in 1960 to develop the study and practice of traditional Korean martial arts.
