43. Hvad Er Hwa Rang Do
(se under Physical). Hvad er tae soo do?
http://home.tiscali.dk/jonbagge/hvad_er_hwa_rang_do.htm
Hvad er Hwa Rang Do? Hwa Rang Do Den Blomstrende Ridders Vej. Hwa Rang Do er Koreansk krigskunst. (se under Spiritual:) Hvordan er Hwa Rang Do anderledes? Hwa Rang Do har over 4000 teknikker og mere end 108 forskellige våben.

TAE KWON DO
Origin: Korea History: The five original Korean Kwans ("schools") were: Chung Do Kwan, Moo Duk Kwan (the art of Tang Soo Do), Yun Moo Kwan, Chang Moo Kwan, and Chi Do Kwan. These were founded in 1945 and 1946. Three more Kwans were founded in the early 1950's - Ji Do Kwan, Song Moo Kwan, and Oh Do Kwan. Description: Primarily a kicking art. There is often a greater emphasis on the sport aspect of the Art. Tae-Kwon-Do stylists tend to fight at an extended range, and keep opponents away with their feet. It is a hard/soft, external, fairly linear style. It is known for being very powerful. Training: Training tends to emphasize sparring, but has forms, and basics are important as well. There is a lot of competition work in many dojangs. The World Taekwondo Federation is the governing body recognized by the International Olympic Committee, and as a result WTF schools usually emphasize Olympic-style full contact sparring. The WTF is represented in the U.S. by the U.S. Taekwondo Union (USTU). The International Taekwondo Federation is an older organization founded by Hong Hi Choi and based out of Canada. It tends to emphasize a combination of self-defense and sparring, and uses forms slightly older than those used by the WTF.

El Tae Kwon Do
Etimológicamente la palabra Tae Kwon-Do significa: Tae = Patada. Kwon = Puño. Do = Camino.

Brief history of Tae Kwon Do

1. Ancient Times (Before 57 BC)
Tae Kwon Do was developed:
  • As an effective means of self-defense (survival from attacks by animals and other tribes.)
  • To help people get food by fighting against animals, other tribes, and nature
2. Middle Ages (57 BC to 1392 AD): Three Kingdoms (The Silla, the Paekche, and the Koguryo) - unified Silla Dynasty - Koryo Dynasty
  • Training tool for the Hwa Rang Do (The "flower youth", meaning "Noble young men", comparable to today's Westpoint Military Academy.)
  • Contest and games for selecting military officials
  • Influenced by Buddhism
3. Modern Times (1392-1953): Yi Dynasty - Japanese Occupation - Korean War
  • Contest and games for selecting soldiers
  • Influenced by Buddhism, Confucianism and Chinese style martial arts
  • (1910- Aug. 15, 1945) Occupation by Japanese, Tae Kwon Do influenced by Japanese culture and Karate (No Koreans allowed to practice any martial art until they find someone who can train Karate to serve their Japanese government with loyalty.)
  • 1943- Founder of Chung Do Kwan, Grandmaster Won Kook Lee, teaches Koreans Tang Soo Do under Japanese supervision

Tang Soo Do in the 20th Century In 1909, the Japanese invaded Korea and banned the practice of all military arts for native Koreans. Some Koreans organized themselves into underground factions and traveled to remote temples to study the martial arts, while others left Korea entirely to study in China and even Japan itself. Korea was liberated in 1945, at the end of World War II. By this time, many Korean martial arts styles existed, varying according to the amount of influence each master had absorbed from Chinese and Japanese styles and to how much the native Subak/Tae Kyon had been modified. Also in 1945, kwans (schools) were organized to teach the native Korean martial arts. Each school emphasized a different aspect of Subak/Tae Kyon and various names emerged for each system, including Soo Bahk Do, Kwon Bop, Tae Soo Do and Tang Soo Do Grandmaster Hwang Kee was one of those who left Korea, going to mainland China to study. In 1945 he founded the Moo Duk Kwan , one of the more prominent kwans, and originated Tang Soo Do. We trace our heritage in the United Tang Soo Do Federation directly back to the Moo Duk Kwan. In 1955, the Korean government sponsored consolidation of the kwans under the umbrella term

Sparring Moon's Martial Arts Academy History of TaeKwonDo
Well over two thousand years ago, when Kyoungju was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla, in what is now Korea, two giants were carved on the tower wall of a Budhist temple. The giants are facing each other assuming a fighting stance as if they were practicing a martial art. These giants undoubtedly represent the early developments of the modern art of fighting known today as Tae Kwon Do. Records show that Tae Kwon Do was practiced as early as about 50 BC. During this time, Korea was divided into three Kingdoms: Silla, Koguryo and Baekche. Paintings on the ceiling of the Muyong-chong, a royal tomb from the Koguryo dynasty, provide us with evidence of the practice of Taek Kyon, the earliest known form of Tae Kwon Do. These as well as other paintings show unarmed combat using techniques that resemble those of modern Tae Kwon Do, specially the use of the knife hand, fist and classical fighting stances. Although Tae Kwon Do first appeared in the Koguryo kingdom, it is Silla's warrior nobility, the Hwarang, who are credited with the growth and spread of the art throughout Korea. Out of the three kingdoms, Silla was the first to be formed but it remained the smallest and less civilized. Silla's coastline was constantly under attack by Japanese pirates. King Gwahggaeto, the 19th monarch in the Koguryo dynasty line, sent armed forces to help his neighboring kingdom fight the pirates. It was at this time that Taek Kyon was first introduced to Silla's warriors class, taught directly and in secret to a few Sillan warriors by early masters of the art.

Below you will find what I think you will agree is one of the most complete and unbiased recordings of the history and background of Tang Soo Do. I have reproduced it from a news letter titled 'Tang Soo Do's News-Letter'. Volume 1, Number 1, Dated May 1977. A copy of which I have had on my book shelf for many years. Unfortunately there is no reference to the author at all. I respectfully acknowledge that this article is reproduced without permission. However, in the true spirit of Tang Soo Do, I have done so to further the understanding and promotion of our martial art, for students past, present and future.
T he necessity to know history.
In 1945, Moo Duk Kwan was found in order to spread, prosper and create understanding of Soo Bahk Do (now called Tang Soo Do), which is the special martial art of Korea, and has a long history and tradition. The foundation of Moo Duk Kwan has remained unshakable by the cooperation and efforts of all members and persons who are interested. The fame of Moo Duk Kwan has grown not only in Korea, but all over the world. Now, although technique is very important, theory has to be taught for the purpose of the increase of Tang Soo Do and the martial arts. First of all, therefore, all members must perfectly understand the foundation theory of rational history about the art. From time to time some members who have excellent skills deviate from the right path because they do not know and understand it's true history and the foundation. So it is very important to study history and the foundation theory.

55. The Style And Art Of Tang Soo Do
16 May 1961 Korean tae soo do Association was formed. 27 July 1972 Hong ChongSoo was elected president of the Moo Duk Kwan Tae Kwon Do Association.
http://www.tang-soo-do.org.uk/thestyle.html
T he martial art of Tang Soo Do is relatively modern, but it's roots lie in the ancient Korean art of Soo Bahk Do, which can be traced back many centuries. Tang Soo Do is a style composed from three major areas and styles, which are Soo Bahk Do (60%), Northern China Kung Fu (30%) and Southern China Kung Fu (10%) Literally translated, the word TANG means T'ang Dynasty of China which reflects the shared cultural background between China and Korea. SOO means hand, but it implies fist, punch, strike or defence. DO means way of life or art. Thus TANG SOO DO means the korean classical martial art which was influenced by the T'ang method of martial art. The final translation can be put together as the rather poetical - WAY OF THE CHINA HAND Tang Soo Do is both a 'hard' and a 'soft' style of martial art, with the hard external influence coming from the Soo Bahk and the soft internal from the Northern Chinese systems. Both of which can easily be recognised in the Hyungs (forms) that are practised within the style. The purpose of Tang Soo Do training is not for fighting, but to perfect techniques which will enhance your total self. If the occasion arises when you must defend yourself, of equal importance is the development of the proper spirit to supplement the physical skills which are attained.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, with roots back to 50 B.C., began in the mid 1900's. It was actually named Taekwondo in 1955 to bring together a broad range of Korean styles which were descendents of Korean arts, such as Kond Soo Do, Tang Soo Do, Su Bak Ki, and Tae Soo Do. All of the earlier Korean arts were influenced by Chinese and Japanese styles which Koreans were exposed to during their conflicts with these countries (late 1800's-1945). Today there are well over 25 million taekwondo martial artists around the world. In 1988 Taekwondo was accepted as an Olympic Sport, one of only two true martial arts in the games.
