History of Tae Kwon Do The earliest records of Martial Arts practice in Korea date back to about 50 B.C. These earliest forms of Korean martial arts are known as 'Tae Kyon'. Evidence that Martial Arts were being practiced at that time can be found in tombs where wall-paintings show two men in fighting-stance. Others reject this evidence and say that these men could be simply dancing. Back then, time there were three kingdoms: Koguryo (37 B.C. - 668 A.D.)
Paekje (18 B.C. - 600 A.D.)
Silla (57 B.C. - 936 A.D.)
Silla unified the kingdoms after winning the war against Paekje in 668 A.D. and Koguryo in 670 A.D. The Hwa Rang Do played an important role at this unification. The Hwa Rang Do was an elite group of young noble men, devoted to cultivating mind and body and serve the kingdom Silla. The best translation for HwaRang would probably be "flowering youth" (Hwa ="flower", Rang="young man"). The HwaRang Do had an honor-code and practiced various forms of martial arts, including Taekyon and Soo Bakh Do. The old honor-code of the HwaRang is the philosophical background of modern Tae Kwon Do. What followed was a time of peace and the HwaRang turned from a military organization to a group specialized in poetry and music. It was in 936 A.D. when Wang Kon founded the Koryo dynasty, an abbreviation of Koguryo. The name Korea is derived from Koryo.

Tae Kwon Do is a martial art developed over 20 centuries ago in Korea. The earliest records of its practice date back to 50BC where tomb paintings show men in fighting stances practising forms known as Taek Kyon.
It is believed that the origins of Taek Kyon date even further back and originated as self-defence against wild animals whose defensive and offensive movements were also the subject of much analysis. Taek Kyon, at the time was only one style of fighting. Others had names such as Subak, Tak Kyon and so on.
By 57 BC Korea had three kingdoms (Koguryo, Paekje and Silla) and, with a certain degree of inevitability, a strong rivalry amongst them led to the focus on the development of very effective fighting techniques.
History, repeatedly, has shown that it is the victor who writes the script and this case was no exception. Silla won its wars against its two rivals and in 668 AD it unified the three kingdoms. Instrumental in its victory were the Hwa Rang Do, an elite group of young men who were devoted to cultivating their bodies and minds and serving the kingdom.
Hwa Rang Do, quite literally, means flowering youth (Hwa=flower, Rang=young man) and the young noblemen of the Hwa Rang Do practised various forms of martial arts. The Hwa Rang Do also developed an honour code and it is this which today forms the philosophical background of Tae Kwon Do.

Historique et esprit du Tae Kwon Do:
  • Bref historique du Tae Kwon Do
  • Esprit du Tae Kwon Do

History of Tae Kwon Do The Advent of Martial Arts Significant evidence of early Martial Arts is the painted murals on the walls of tombs. Historical documents of the dynasties show the words “Soo Bak”, this was the name of a Martial Art where the use of the hands and feet were practised. Tae Kwon Do in Ancient Times Martial Arts in Korea, as in most other countries originated through the necessity to defend itself against other countries and wild animals. As time progressed, organisation of the martial arts was increased, and although martial arts were traditionally used for defence purposes, due to the aggressive nature, there were organised competition matches as well. The Three Kingdom Period Koguryo (37BC - 668AD). Koguryo was established in 37 BC and was located in North Korea. In Tunsko, the capital of Koguryo, two tombs were discovered. On the ceilings of the tombs illustrations of two men fighting were found, the style appears to be that of Tae Kwon Do. During the summer months, King Taejo organised festivals. At some of these festivals the events were sword dancing, archery and “TaekGyeon” (the old form of Tae Kwon Do).

EZ Defense Tang Soo Do / Tae Kwon Do The very first evidence of this ancient form of Korean martial arts appeared during the Three Kingdom era (57 BC-935 AD) as Hwa Rang Do. Since then, 2,000 years have passed. The indigenous martial arts quietly developed through generations of the Korean people. During some eras it flourished and other times it diminished, according to the political, economic or cultural environment. The art was known by various names throughout the eras as Hwa Rang Do, Moo Sul, Kyuck Too Ki, Soo Bahk Ki, Soo Byuck Ki, Taek Kyun etc. respectively. Following 1945 Korean independence, the Korean martial arts were again merged and flourished throughout the entire Korean Peninsula. Many organizations were founded with various names such as Soo Bahk Do, Tang Soo Do , Tae Soo Do and so on. At the beginning of the modern era of the Korean martial arts, Tang Soo Do was the most popular term for these arts, however, at that time, the Korean political leader was concerned about establishing Korean value based on Korean nationalism. The political leaders recognized the popularity of Korean martial arts around the world, but were opposed to the use of the name Tang Soo Do for the art, as it sounded like a Chinese martial art, because the first word "Tang" could be interpreted as representing the Chinese Tang Dynasty (617-907 AD). In 1964, a government sponsored small group created a new name for the Korean martial arts:

Men Gen. Choi Hong Hi hadde også sterk tilknytting til Chung Do Kwan, som ikke var en militær skole. Chung Do Kwan var den største av skolene på den tiden. Skolen bli stiftet av Won Kook Lee, men i 1954 overtok Gen. Choi Hong Hi ledelsen.

About Tang Soo Do Meaning of Tang Soo Do
Literally translated, the word Tang means T'ang Dynasty of China, which reflects the shared cultural background between China and Korea ( 617-907 AD ). Soo means hand, but it implies fist, punch, strike, or defence, etc. Do means way of life or art. Thus Tang Soo Do means the Korean classical martial art which legendarily was influenced by the T'ang method of martial art. The Ten Articles of Faith Be loyal to your country.
    Be obedient to your parents.
Be loving between husband and wife. Be cooperative between brothers. Be faithful between friends. Be respectful to your elders. Be faithful between teacher and student. Know the difference between good and evil. Never retreat in battle. Always finish what you start. Origin The exact origin of Tang Soo Do, as well as of any martial arts in general, is obscure, although there are a number of historical theories. However, the most credible and traditional view is that martial arts originated not in any one country, but in almost all parts of the globe, as they were needed be primitive people. Development in Early Ages Medieval Development The Unified Silla Kingdom was overthrown by a warlord, Wang Kun, in 918 AD, and a new kingdom called "Koryo" lasted for 475 years. In 1392 AD, the new kingdom, Yi Dynasty, succeeded and lasted about 500 years. Approximately a thousand year period elapsed between the two dynasties. Tang Soo Do became very popular with the general public. In those days it was called Kwon Bop, Tae Kyun, Soo Bahk, Tang Soo, etc. The very first complete martial art book was written at this time. This most important book is called "Mooyae Dobo Tongji." It was written in 1790 AD and contained illustrations that substantiate the theory that "Soo Bahk Ki," the formal name for Tang Soo Do, had quickly developed into a sophisticated art of combat techniques.

Among the three kingdoms, the Silla Dynasty was most famous for its development of martial arts. A corps formed by young aristocrats who were called "Hwa Rang Dan" was the major group who developed those arts. These warriors were instrumental in unifying the peninsula as the new Silla Dynasty (688 AD - 935AD), and furnished many of the early leaders of that dynasty. Most Korean martial arts trace thier spiritual and technical heritage to this group. The names of some groups of arts reflect this, such as Hwa Rang Do or Hwa Soo Do. Our Five Codes of Tang Soo Do, originated by Won Kwang, a monk, are part of the spiritual heritage.
