THE MEANING OF TANG SOO DO
Tang Soo Do is the name of the art in which we train. Translated the word,"tang" represents the Tang Dynasty of China, circa (517-907 AD) which share a cultural background with Korea."soo" translated means hand, but can also mean fist, punch, strike or defence, and "Do" translated is the way of life or art, roughly translated as "style to teach Moo and Duk through training in the Martial Arts." As simple as the translations may seem, deeper reflection is required to understand that it is the development of inner strength balanced with external strength that leads us to a path of virtue and righteousness.
It is also interesting to note that Tang Soo Do has influences from Chinese Kung Fu as well as the ancient Korean Soo Bahk.
Brief History of Martial Arts
Even though the origin of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan can be treaced back to its founder, date and location, the origin of the martial arts in general is vague. Some sources will claim that the martial arts started with Buddhist monks in India and were spread with their travels.
However, as it was necessary for men to defend their countries all over the world, it is more likely that the arts of self defense developed in many parts of the world and knowledge was shared with time.

Brief History of Tang Soo Do
In Korea, the art developed from the art known as Soo Bahk Do. All 'traditional' clubs still affiliate with the founder of Tang Soo Do, Mr Hwang Kee, have gone back to the name Soo Bahk Do. Grand Master Hwang Kee founded the Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan style of karate on Nov.9th in the year of 1945, in Seoul Korea. The words "Tang Soo Do" mean "way of the hand of Tang(dynasty)" as described by the founder. However, the same chinese characters are read by the Japanese as Kara-te(karate). Tang Soo Do then is both a generic term referring to an open hand fighting as well as to the specific group of techniques, wich are collectively known as the Tang Soo Do style. The art of Soo Bahk Do was also originally known as Soo Bahk Ki. A man that was greatly revered as the best of the best was a main instructor of this system. His name (or one of his many names(since he traveled with many alias')) was Chang Sam Bong. He had a school in Man-Joo, wich is just north of Korea. Korea was forced to stop practicing any and all martial arts during the Japanese occupation, but many martial artists trained underground until the liberation of Korea from Japan on August 15, 1945. At this time Master Hwang Kee begin the formal art of Tang Soo Do, and on Nov.9, 1945 he started the Moo Duk Kwan association at its current headquarters in Seoul Korea.

The Art of Tang Soo Do
I n 1968 Master Jae Chul Shin came to the United States of America as the U.S. representative for the Korean Soo Bahk Do Association. He formed the United States Tang Soo Do Federation in Burlington, New Jersey. The organization expanded to all parts of America and foreign countries. This traditional and classical art was quickly accepted and soon grew in popularity throughout America and the world. After 14 years of Tang Soo Do promotion in the U.S.A. and the world, the organisation was re-organised to fit new demands internationally and domestically. On November 13th 1982, a charter convention for the World Tang Soo Do Association was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the charter convention a new constitution was passed, a new logo and insignia were selected, the uniform and belt system were revised, and new organizational standards were adopted. Most importantly, Master Jae C. Shin was recognised as Grandmaster of the World Tang Soo Do Association. With the proclamation of three mottos, Traditionalism, Professionalism and Brotherhood, the advent of the World Tang Soo Do Association evoked the interest of many international martial artists, whose genuine interest was in the Art, and was not sports oriented. In the past decade, the Association expanded from 17 member studios to 350, from 164 charter members to over 50,000 members. As of 1990, the following global locations are training under the banner of the World Tang Soo Do Association; Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Great Britain

Tang Soo Do became one of the most popular names used to describe the practice. However, the Korean government objected to the name, because of the word Tang (Tang was a Chinese Dynasty). As a result, Taekwondo was adopted as a national martial art, and quickly went on to become a sport. In contrast, Tang Soo Do retained its identity as a traditional Korean martial art. Chuck Norris started his martial arts studies with Tang Soo Do, and currently holds a sixth degree black belt.
