SALON'S COVERAGE OF THE INTERNATIONAL CUSTODY BATTLE OVER A 6-YEAR-OLD CUBAN REFUGEE.
T he discovery in November of 6-year-old Cuban refugee Elián González, lost at sea after the boat carrying his family to Miami capsized, sparked an international custody battle that has pitted Miami's Cuban-American community against Havana and ignited the biggest threat to U.S.-Cuban relations since the missile crisis of 1962. At some turns, the story has taken on Biblical dimensions (complete with apparitions and comparisons to the young Moses). At others, it has raised the question of whether a child's well-being has been sacrificed for political gain. In the end, only one question lingers: Should Elián remain in the U.S. or should he be reunited with his father in Cuba? Read Salon's ongoing coverage. Fiery tug-of-war over Angkor Wat
By Mark Baker, Herald Correspondent in Phnom Penh January 31 2003 Students torch cars outside the Thai embassy on Wednesday night. Photo: AFP Thailand has moved to suspend diplomatic relations with neighbouring Cambodia after a night of rioting in which its Phnom Penh embassy was wrecked, dozens of Thai businesses were torched and hundreds of its nationals were forced to flee the country. At the height of the crisis the Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, issued an ultimatum to his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Sen, that he would send in commandos unless Cambodia security forces regained control within an hour. Five Thai C-130 military transports evacuated the 10 embassy staff and more than 600 Thai residents and tourists as mobs on foot and motorcycles roamed the streets of the capital chanting anti-Thai slogans. The riots were sparked by an apparent misunderstanding over reported claims by a popular Thai television actress, Suwanan Kongying, that the temples of Angkor Wat - Cambodia's most prized cultural and religious treasures - belonged to Thailand and should be returned.

Shop Court may decide on Laulala tug-of-war The New Zealand Rugby Football Union is facing another tug-of-war between two provinces for the services of a high-profile player and this case may yet end up in the courts. Second Division Counties Manukau and NPC outfit Canterbury are both laying claim to the services of New Zealand Colts centre Casey Laulala. This follows shortly after the recent uneasy compromise which prevented court action in the Deacon Manu case. Manu signed a two-year contract with Auckland at the end of 2002, but he then tried to back out of it this year. However, after a messy legal wrangle, a conclusion was reached and Manu has since been told to play for the Blues in the Super 12 before returning to Waikato for NPC duty.

Thinner ropes are harder to hang onto and more likely to cause rope burns. Tie a few knots in the ropes for a good grip. (Warn against wrapping the rope around waists or wrists.) WHAT YOU DO: Set two families at opposite ends of the rope. Center the rope over a line on the ground and ask them to step back six feet to another line you've marked with tape. At a signal, each family strains to pull the other over to its side. Run this like a double elimination tournament. Pick the family names out of a hat to determine the draw. Winners continue to accept new challengers, and the losers continue in a losers bracket. A loss in the losers bracket means a family is out. Sun decides to retain control of Java; the Java community voices mixed reactions

Advertisement December 11, 1999 As Java rolls full steam ahead into enterprises, its creator, Sun Microsystems, has decided to remain at the helm of the technology's development. Just last week, the company stunned the Java Business Expo in New York by announcing that it has removed Java from consideration by the European Computer Manufacturers' Association (ECMA), a standards body to which Sun had been considering turning over control of the platform. Sun officials described the move as an effort to remain a steadfast guardian of the standard without exerting undue control over the technology, but for most the decision once again raised the question of potential conflicts between the company's need to drive shareholder value and its paternal role in the development of Java and the needs of the industry embracing it. At the heart of the issue is the choice between a unified vision that can evolve the Java standard over time or a model in which everyone can influence the platform's development, says Jeff Fredrick, vice president of engineering at code provider Open Avenue, in Scotts Valley, Calif.

Tug-of-War
Ages 5 to 8 Number of participants: At least eight kids What players will need: A long rope, a piece of string, and an open space to play in Length of time: Ten to 30 minutes Rules of the game: Before play starts, find a long rope and tie a piece of string to mark the center. Make a corresponding mark on the ground to denote where the center is. Then have the children divide into two teams and pick team captains. Each captain grabs one end of the rope near the center, and the rest of her teammates line up behind her. Each child should stand on the opposite side of the rope from the person in front of him. On the signal "ready-set-go," each team pulls the rope as hard as they can. The children tug and tug until one team is forced to let go, steps over the line marked on the ground, or falls over. The remaining team wins. See more Outdoor Games See more Party Games See more Games for 5-Year-Olds See more Games for 6- to 8-Year-Olds

Gene Tug-of-War Leads to Distinct Species
By crossing two mouse species that normally do not interbreed, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) researchers have gained a better understanding of how gene imprinting can influence the establishment of distinct species. The majority of mammalian genes are present in two copies that are expressed and regulated. A small number of mammalian genes, however, are subject to special regulation by a process called gene imprinting. The imprint is a chemical mark attached to genes during egg or sperm development. Imprinting physically marks a gene in such a way that the parental origin of the gene can be distinguished and expressed accordingly. Most imprinted genes seem to govern fetal growth regulation, explained Shirley M. Tilghman , an HHMI investigator at Princeton University. Some researchers speculate that imprinting evolved in order to establish boundaries between species. Imprinting is also thought to provide a barrier to unisexual reproduction and the interbreeding of species. An hypothesis about the origin of imprinting, favored by Tilghman and her colleagues, is that imprinting was created as the result of a parental "tug-of-war." According to the theory, fathers contribute genes that enhance growth because their best interests are served if their progeny extract as many maternal resources as possible in order to ensure survival. Mothers, on the other hand, then silence their copy of growth-promoting genes in retaliation because they value all of their progeny equally.

Tug-of-war over whooping crane ends in Canada's favour
Last Updated Fri, 14 Feb 2003 15:46:21 EDMONTON - A cross-border dispute over the remains of a legendary whooping crane has ended. Canus, the bird that is credited with nudging his species back from the brink of extinction, will be sent home to Canada. The tall, dark whooper died last month after fathering more than 180 descendents.

Scientists with the Canadian Wildlife Service rescued Canus from Wood Buffalo Park on the Alberta-Northwest Territories border. The month-old chick had a broken wing that eventually had to be amputated. Canus was sent to the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland. He spent most of his life in the U.S., where artificial insemination allowed him to father chicks as part of a captive breeding program. Canus' name reflects the two countries that fought over his final resting place. Canadian scientists said the International Whooping Crane Recovery Team agreed in 1993 to return the bird's remains to a museum north of the border.

FTC Hosts Privacy Tug-of-War
By Keith Perine Issue Date: Mar 13 2001 Industry representatives say new laws would drive up costs, while advocacy groups say less-deceptive data-handling practices are needed. WASHINGTON — Privacy advocates and industry representatives sparred Tuesday over the need for new privacy regulations on information-sharing, during a daylong Federal Trade Commission workshop on data-handling practices in the private sector. The FTC held the workshop just as the debate regarding Internet privacy begins to build up steam in Congress. Dozens of lobbyists, reporters and commission staffers crowded into the commission's downtown fortress to hear presentations on how direct marketers, retailers, credit card companies and the like, compile information to better target their marketing and advertising efforts. Industry representatives argued that information-sharing is good for business and consumers, while privacy advocates argued that more-transparent data-handling practices are needed.

Most of the reaction to President Bush's speech on the Middle East last week focused on its content, especially his dual call for a Palestinian leadership change and the creation of a Palestinian state within three years. But regardless of the merits or feasibility of these substantive positions, the speech, above all, reflected the continuing tension within different corners of the Bush administration and how this tension can change the aims of policy. your view

The aim of the speech had changed substantially by the time it was delivered. Initially, it was tied to convening a Middle East peace conference this summer. When violence in the Middle East escalated in April and May, with continuing Palestinian suicide bombings in Israel and harsh Israeli measures in the West Bank, public opinion in the Middle East and in the United States pushed the administration to announce a new diplomatic initiative. After consulting leaders from the region, Secretary of State Colin Powell announced the intention to host a conference that would revive the Middle East peace process. But even before Mr. Powell had a chance to articulate details, the White House played down the idea, suggesting that the gathering would be a "meeting," not a "conference."

http://www.tugofwar.co.uk/abouttow.html
About The Tug Of War Association Did you know that Tug of War is a properly organised sport? Its governing body in England is the Tug Of War Association (ToWA), the other UK countries have their own associations. The ToWA was founded in 1958, prior to that the sport was organised within the Amateur Athletic Association. The ToWA and the other UK associations are members of the Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) The ToWA organises both mens and womens competitions, but mixed teams and mens teams pulling against womens teams are not allowed under ToWA rules. However, in England for an experimental period currently in operation, women can pull in mens teams in open competitions. Competitions under ToWA laws are held every weekend. Outdoor Tug of War (on grass) from March to September, and Indoor Tug of War (on mats) from October to February. All member clubs can compete at these meetings, clubs who are not members of the ToWA may also compete for a trial period but must register with the Association if they wish to continue pulling in these competitions. A Tug of War team consists of eight pullers plus a coach and a trainer, the coach is the only person in the arena (apart from the judge) who may address remarks to the team during a pull. All pulls are conducted under the control of a ToWA judge. Pulls are best of three, the choice of first end being decided by the toss of a coin. The object is to drag the opposing team a distance of four metres. Teams can be disqualified for persistently infringing the rules. The rules are clearly stated in the ToWA Handbook, but if you stay in a proper pulling position, i.e. facing forwards with both hands on the rope, do not sit down and do not lock the rope across your body you should be OK.
