12:00 PM Feb. 10, 2003 PT BENAKENAKONDA, India Here, under a blazing sun in a southern Indian cotton field 9,000 miles from U.S. biotechnology giant Monsanto's headquarters, Chikkappa Nilakanti has literally sown seeds of discontent. Nilakanti is one of 55,000 farmers in India who recently planted cotton genetically engineered by Monsanto to fight pests without pesticides.

India permitted the crop into the country last year after a raucous four-year battle and that decision is still being hotly contested in a country that has always been skeptical of biotechnology. Even now, no edible biotechnology crops are legally grown for consumption in India, the world's second-most populous country.

Open-Source Tug of War Heats Up
By Michelle Delio Also by this reporter Page 1 of 1
02:00 AM Sep. 26, 2002 PT Legislation advocating government use of open-source software is un-American, anticompetitive, bad for business and hell on the economy and taxpayers, according to the Initiative for Software Choice. Over the past year or so, more than two dozen governments have passed or proposed nearly 70 laws or policy changes that stipulate or strongly encourage governmental use of open-source software.

The Initiative for Software Choice has been lobbying against such laws since May, and intends to step up its efforts over the next few weeks to block the adoption of pending open-source preference proposals in Europe and South America. The ISC's first target will be Venezuela, where President Hugo Chavez's key ministers have been working on a package of presidential decrees. The package, part of what the government is variously calling "Measures to Reactivate the Economy" and "Basic Policies to Modernize the State," is slated to be released Saturday, and is expected to include a decree mandating nearly exclusive governmental use of open-source software.

In this first paragraph, I should introduce myself, my business, my club, or my reason for building a Web site. I can use the subheadings below to give detailed introductions, or I can just summarize the introduction here. I could also give visitors tips for navigating my site—what’s located under each button, for example. Listing Site Updates
Under one of these subheadings, it’s a good idea to list recent updates to my site so that visitors, especially return visitors, can check out the new stuff first. For example, I could list the date and a brief description of the update:
7/16/00 Added pictures of my vacation to the Photo page.
6/25/00 Updated the team schedule for the fall 200 season.
5/30/00 Added information about a new product my business offers.
I could also list updated news about my site’s topic. For example, if my site were about a particular sport, I’d could discuss the outcome of a recent competition. Welcome To My Home Page
This would also be a great place to include any new information or changes that you have made to your site recently. It is important to regularly change the content on your site and make updates to the information that you display. Doing this will help you to get more return visits from your visitors.

In a letter to the 199 National Olympic Committees, the President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, calls for support to athletes and officials taking part in The World Games....

Tug of War Another sport with considerable tradition: tug of war as a competitive match of strength between two teams was practiced as early as 500 B.C. by Greek athletes. It was also considered an ideal physical training and a perfect workout as basis for many other sports. The teams of eight members are captained by the lead person - the first in line - and the anchor: the last man or woman who may wrap the rope around his or her body once. The key is for the rope to be pulled in a straight line from the lead to the anchor. The team pulling the center of the rope four meters from the starting position is declared the winner. The rope is between 33,5 and 36m in length, 10 to 12,5cm in diameter, and of hemp. Go to the site of the Tug of War International Federation - TWIF, click on the pictogram!

Channel 5 chief executive Dawn Airey is at the centre of a multimillion pound tug of war between her RTL paymasters and ITV, it emerged today. Ms Airey is understood to be willing to take on up the post of director of channels at ITV, but only if network bosses give her complete control of the channel and guarantee her a substantial exit package if a unified ITV is taken over within a few years. ITV is believed to have offered her a pay deal worth between £2m-£3m including the exit clause.

CDDB tug of warusers are the losers?

By ZDNN Staff
ZDNet News
May 23, 2001, 5:00 PM PT
Earlier this month, when he decided to record a new compact disc, Joe Smith followed a procedure he's done hundreds of times: Insert the CD, get into the online music database and select songs. Yet this time, instead of displaying the usual song information, the popular CD-burning software made by Roxio delivered a different message. Roxio products were no longer supported by Gracenote's CD information service, which housed the database Smith had been using to match song and album titles with a disc placed into his computera collection entered in large part by individuals on the Net. "I blame Gracenote," Smith said, for "taking what is essentially an open-source database and closing it off." Because so many people voluntarily helped build the database, being locked out is a slap in the face, said the software engineer who asked that his real name not be used.
The issue is central to a lawsuit that could potentially affect a variety of communities throughout the Internet, from so-called open-source programming projects to comments archived on online bulletin boards.

Proving once again their dedication and commitment to their sport, the Canungra Ladies Tug of War team competed in 2 international events, as well as several national and local competitions in the last year. In their first international competition after the 2000 World Titles in Blackpool, Brian and the girls travelled to Japan to take on the world's finest at the 2001 6th World Games, held in Akita from the 16th -26th August. This was an invitation- only competition that pitted the girls against the best indoor tug of war teams in the world. Australia was selected to compete as a representative from the Pacific regions. This was despite the fact that the team had never competed at indoor tug of war before. Never the ones to give up a challenge though, the girls, under the

At stake is the future of the line sharing order that allows competitive local exchange carriers ( CLECs ) to obtain access to the high-frequency portion of the local loop from the regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs), and subsequent rules regarding the unbundled network element-platform ( UNE -P).
