THE SOCIETY OF HWARANG
This site is sponsored by the oldest executive protection training academy in the country: Executive Security International (ESI). However, THE SOCIETY OF THE HWA RANG is a free association of martial artists devoted to the arts as a profession. Primarily, but not intentionally, the members of THE SOCIETY come from backgrounds in the Korean arts of Hapkido, Hwa Rang Do, Kuk Sool Won, Tukong Moosul and Tae Kwon Do. THE SOCIETY 's affiliation with the soft Korean arts is an accident of history due to the personal narrative of its founder, Bob Duggan who became a devotee of Hapkido/Hwa Rang Do in 1968, and in 1980 founded ESI. It was in the year of '68 that he and his close friend, Vicente Montenegro were initiated into the arts as the first students of Grand Master Joo Sang Lee, and in 1972 came under the personal tutelage of his younger brother, Grand Master Joo Bang Lee, founder of the World Hwa Rang Do Association. THE SOCIETY OF THE HWARANG is open to martial artists of every background. THE SOCIETY is devoted to seeking knowledge in the fighting arts, to critique our most cherished assumptions with the goal of establishing rigorous standards of excellence, and apply these concepts to professional careers in the field of protection, security, law enforcement and military careers.

Combatives: Military Martial Arts
Part Tukong Moosul Tukong moosul takes its name from the elite Tu Kong (Special Combat) commando unit of the South Korean Army. As with the other military martial arts described in this article, the originators of tukong moosul strived to take the best of other martial arts and evolve the techniques into combat-oriented, effective training. Tukong incorporates techniques from other Korean arts like tae kwon do and hapkido , as well as judo and kung fu General Chang K. Oe, commander of the Tu Kong unit, enlisted Won Ik Yi from army headquarters and several top fighters from within the Tu Kong unit to develop the training. Won Ik Yi was trained in Shaolin-style martial arts as a child and incorporated many kung fu techniques in the original tukong moosul curriculum. Others, including Tukong Moosul Association Grandmaster In Ki Kim, one of the Tu Kong unit masters, have added techniques in more recent years.

How to Choose the Right Art THE SHAPE OF A MARTIAL ART by Bill Wallace
Black Belt Magazine April 2002 I don't know of anybody who just woke up one day and said, "I want to take shorin-ryu karate," or "I want to take goju-ryu. "Most people don't have any idea what makes one art different from the next. They just think karate is karate; it doesn't matter whether it is really taekwondo, jujutsu or judo. They learn about those different systems only when they join a school and start reading books and magazines. That is unfortunate because many people end up studying an art that is not particularly well-suited to their body type and personal goals. Although they often find out whether they are gifted in the art they've selected or they should have picked a different style during their first three months of training, you can save yourself some wasted time by reviewing the following guidelines for selecting a martial art.
  • Because judo concentrates on throwing techniques, it is a good choice if you have a short, squatty physique. You won't be punching or kicking, so you'll have to rely on maneuvering close to your opponent, getting under his center of gravity and tossing him into the air and onto the mat. Judo is also a good choice if you are tall and lanky and don't want to wrestle or get down on the ground because you've got too many limbs in the way. However, even if you are highly skilled, you will have trouble keeping a shorter opponent away from you.
