Underwater hockey night in Canada
By Courtney Prieur Underwater hockey is making a big splash among young Ottawa athletes.
Litchfield already has a friend hooked on the sport and fathers are bringing their sons to practice.
The Ottawa club, which plays at three local pools, hopes the younger players will spread the word about the sport, telling others what the game is all about.
From the surface, the game looks like a herd of people swimming on top of each other in a race for the puck, pausing for a split second to take a breath and then diving back under. But underneath the water, you can see the players turn their body to protect the puck from being stolen, defensive lineups are visible, and the puck-handling skills incredible.
Their equipment consists of a water polo cap with an attached snorkel, a scuba mask and flippers. They also wear a glove on the playing hand covered in silicone or dried glue to prevent their knuckles from scraping the bottom as they push the puck along. The players use handmade, 30-centimetre wooden sticks, painted black or white, so players can tell the teams apart.
But when the game first started in 1954, the stick was longer and Y-shaped. Underwater hockey, or Octapush, as it was first called, started in England. Alan Blake invented it to improve the snorkeling skills of his scuba students in the winter. Since then, the game has evolved in over 20 countries.

Underwater Hockey is an exciting and addictive game played at the bottom of a pool with a short stick and a lead puck. This world wide sport was invented in England by a group of free-divers who wanted to stay in shape over the winter season. If you enjoy a great physical workout and other fun pool activities then Underwater Hockey is for you. For more information check out the Underwater Hockey Introduction
The MIT Scuba club occasionally played Underwater Hockey for fun. We are now organizing to bring this sport to MIT for regular play.

you scream. You are by now asking the question, what is underwater hockey? Underwater hockey is a high passed sport that utilizes snorkeling gear (i.e. mask, snorkel and flippers) along with a protective glove and stick. Each team attempts to push a puck along the bottom of the pool up to the other side of the court (25m long) and score a goal. The opposition tries to protect their goal and prevent the other team from scoring. In Newcastle we run a very social club, which participates in competitions annually in a few regional centers (now that means road trips) and other social events. In recent times we have sent teams to competitions in Armidale, Gold Coast, and Sydney. The club also runs a small internal social competition each semester where we are looking at forming a women and men's competition. We have all the gear required to play so just bring your self, some swimmers, and the willingness to try! There are many people willing to teach you how to play so don't be afraid to come along as we want as many players as possible regardless of talent or any other gripes you think we may have.

It’s fast paced, fun, and dramatically improves your snorkeling skills! Interested in Playing in Gainesville? The UWH Club of Gainesville always welcomes new players. The club invites men and women of all ages to come and participate. A mask, snorkel, fins, and a desire to have fun are required. INTRODUCTION: Underwater Hockey has it is origins from the United Kingdom in the mid 50’s. Countries playing the sport today include Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Britain, Colombia, Canada, France, Italy, Holland, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, and Zimbabwe.
The game is played in a swimming pool with a court size of 12 metres wide by 25 metres long and 2 metres deep. Each player wears mask, snorkel, fins, cap, glove and stick which is held in one hand and used to flick and push a 1.3 kg disc - shaped lead puck along the bottom of the pool. Each team consists of 6 players and up to 4 substitutes, the game is played in two 15 minute halves with 3 minute break and 2 time outs of 1 minute.
Underwater Hockey as a form of physical recreation can be played for fun or more competitively, by anyone who is confident in the water and likes the idea of playing an aquatic team game where good swimming skills aren’t essential. Underwater Hockey is played in most regional centres in South Australia and contact with the local groups can be made through the pool managements. The main centre for Underwater Hockey in SA is the Adelaide Aquatic Centre in North Adelaide: Training is held on Sunday 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm

What is Underwater Hockey?
Underwater Hockey is a game played by two teams of 10 players each. 6 players are in the water at any one time with the remaining 4 swop outs waiting out of the water. The reserves can swop in as often as needed whenever its needed as long as there are only 6 players of the team in the water at any one time.
As you may have guessed the game is played by holding your breath (swallowing water is not advised) with the lead puck sitting at the bottom of the pool. The pool is usually about 1.8m to 2m deep, although some pools push limits and are about 2.5m deep.
The puck is played with a 25 cm long hockey stick which looks absolutely nothing like a land hockey stick. The stick is used to push the puck along the bottom of the pool and to flick it either at goal or towards a team member. This allows the game to move incredibly fast because the puck can lift up to about 30cm off the floor of the pool (although you've got to be damn good to do it!) and there is no friction between the tile floor and the puck.
Other items of equipment necessary are Swimming fins (closed heel advised), Scuba mask and Snorkel. You will also need a stick and glove (to protect your fingers from the tiles) but these will usually be lent to beginners before they eventually get their own. The kit looks much like the following:

Practice Times:
Tuesdays and Thursdays: 5pm at the Rhodes "pool". Format of a Rhodes practice:
In the past we have just hopped in and played.... However this is a basic idea of the "new" schedule. Players may join in at any stage as students can NEVER be expected to be on time or do any hard work! Tuesday/Thursday
5:00 a couple of warm up lengths starting slow getting to figures of 8.
5:15 Stick work drills and the like.
5:30 2 on 1 and 3 on 2 and then 3 on 3 .... Just to open up the lungs.
5:45 Full on Rhodes brawl Monday/Wednesday
We'll just have to wait and see.... Players are still expected to do their own fitness work when ever they can ....
Information about playing and training for uwh on the www The Rhodes team would like to thank Steve Stoke and all involved for his mammoth manual. It has been really helpful as we still don't have a coach (or a pool ....). Here is a list of links to places where one can find out a bit more about the game, it's rules and some techniques used in games and in training.
