http://www.teachcircus.com/unicycle.html
UNICYCLING (Click photos to enlarge) Teaching students to ride unicycles may seem daunting to teachers. However, it can be taught quite effectively by teachers with knowledge of basic progressions. It should be understood that these skills usually take more time to learn than juggling and manipulative skills. Students may not experience success as quickly as in other activities, but the rewards of conquering these challenging skills are substantial. There will always be a handful of students who make unicycling their mission. Safety Considerations If you are a Physical Education teacher, think of these skills as similar to gymnastics in terms of class routines and safety procedures. Students should always be supervised when practicing, and should be taught how to spot each other. Horseplay should never be tolerated. People often perceive unicycling as risky, maybe because they have seen a daredevil performer who rode (seemingly) out of control, or on a very tall unicycle. The result is an unfounded perception of high risk. The reality is that when basic safety procedures are followed, unicycle riding is actually safer than riding bicycles, skateboards, and in-line skates. This is because unicycles do not permit the rider to coast or achieve high speeds. Although mild bumps and scrapes do sometimes occur, teachers can minimize this occurrence by requiring students to wear kneepads and gloves while practicing. Many schools also use helmets. Today, helmets are inexpensive and lend an air of safety and forethought to peoples' perceptions of unicycling in a school environment.

Unicycle Basketball
Here you'll find some pictures of us playing unicycle basketball Uni basketball! If you haven't tried it yet, this is your chance! To put our unis to use, we are meeting at a basketball court: to practice stuff, throw a ball around, play basketball, and generally have (a lot of) fun. It's a great workout, too. Don't worry about not being able to ride well, or not being able to ride at all. It only takes a few hours of practice to get going, and we'll help you get started (and get better). We'll usually even bring some extra unis. Since November 2002, we have been playing uni basketball at a new location, at Strawberry Creek Park in Berkeley. The court has evening lighting and allows us to start later and play past sunset. (Very useful for those of us who have regular jobs). We are currently meeting Wednesdays at 6:30pm at Strawberry Creek Park, until about 8 or 8:30pm. On Wednesday, March 5, 2003, there will be a uni video evening at Paul's place afterwards. To get to the park, from Sacramento Blvd in Berkeley, turn West (towards the Bay) onto Addison St, a few blocks south of University Ave. Go a few blocks until Addison St runs into the basketball courts in front of you. Strawberry Creek Park contains a bit more than just the courts, and runs from Addison St to Bancroft Way, between Acton and Bonar Streets.

Unicycling is the most superior form of human-powered transportation!
    You may ask "WHY?"
Because unicycling is superior to all the rest.
"BUT HOW ABOUT BICYCLING?" you may ask...
15 reasons unicycles are better than bicycles:
    1. Unicycles are safer. Far fewer unicycles get in accidents.
  • -They are more visible. -Cars actually stop to let you cross.
  • 2. Unicycles are more maneuverable.
  • -It's much easier to do a 180 on a unicycle.
  • 3. They are more transportable. You can take your unicycle on the bus. 4. Unicyclists can get away with a lot more. Cops don't know how to classify unicycles
  • -Unicyclists can ride in the street or on the sidewalk -You can take your unicycle into the post office with you.
  • 5. They are less trivial to learn how to ride. Challenges are healthy 6. Two wheels are excessive.
ONE WHEEL ONE WORLD! 7. You can ride with no hands without loss of maneuverability.
In fact you can't not ride with no hands. unless you hold on to the seat
  • -Having your hands free is very useful; you can juggle, handwhistle, do origami, or eat lunch.
  • 8. They are slower downhill.

UNICYCLING IN TIANANMEN!
In the Heart of China
On October 9, 1998, the last day of my trip, I went to hang out in the Tiananmon Square area. I had no expectations of actually being able to ride there, since when I and John Foss tried to do so in 1993 when the Great Wall Unicycling Marathon was held, we were immediately and firmly stopped by the ubiquitous policemen.
Hey, let me try it! So I figured, I'll just push my unicycle and ask someone to snap a quick shot. To my surprise, the policemen didn't say a word. As soon as I started riding a Chinese girl comes over and says "Hey, I can ride that thing! Let me try." So here she is. Yes, she could ride, but had trouble with my saddle being too high for her.
Ni qi yige!
"Ni qi yige" means something like "Hey, why don't you ride that thing!". Many of the participants in the Great Wall Marathon in 1993 learned this expression after hearing it dozens of times, Well, I did "qi yige", and attracted crowds without end. After ten or fifteen minutes of performing and hundreds of people gathering, the cops put an end to it.
But as I start walking away, again I get another torrent of "qi yige"s, and I couldn't resist hopping on. But of course this at once attracts dozens, soon hundreds, of curious onlookers, so I repeated show after show until the cops politely but not too firmly made us disperse.
