simple! by Joel Penson Unicycling Yes, well it may look different, but that is only because when you look at a unicyclist, you are actually projecting your schema, or paradyme, of a cyclist, which for at least 99.9999% of people just happens to be a two-wheeler, or bicyclist. Hence you wonder where the other wheel is, and for those who do not think before speaking, blurt out "wheres the other wheel"... GET OVER IT! I have not lost a wheel, instead I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of unicycling and all of the improvements in personal traits associated with spending hours and hours failing, only to find success! It took me a month of afternoons in mid 1998 to be able to ride a unicycle indefinately. I was inspired by a friend who could ride to the end of the street and back without a dismount, SIMPLY AMAZING! Since then I have managed to ride a 24" for 50km with no dismount, and also ridden in some wild places... Styles of unicycling I have tried include:
  • distance
  • mountain
  • skills
  • my unicycles Distance I mostly enjoy distance riding. I find that when I go out for a long ride, my mind doesn't have much of a chance to wander, as I need to keep focussed (particularly on the geared unicycle which has about an inch of play between the 2 chains).

Single Minded Unicycle riders are passionate about going places one wheel at a time By Leigh Ann Maze The unicycle is no longer just for circus performers and jugglers. A small but growing number of unicyclists, including a handful of local residents, are pedaling unicycling away from its birthplace in circus tents and out into the wild. Trey Miller, 7, who lives part-time with his father in Saratoga, often can be seen practicing on his unicycle at the Saratoga High School track during his sister's cheerleading practice. When he first began, Trey would measure the progress he could make without falling first in inches, then feet, and finally laps. "I can go around three times without stopping," Trey says. Now, Trey often rides his unicycle to Daves Avenue School in the mornings alongside his best friend, Beau Hoover, and Beau's father, Nathan Hoover of Los Gatos. Although Nathan Hoover occasionally rides to school with the kids and then continues on his seven-mile commute to work as a software engineer, his true passion is mountain unicyclingor MUni, as it is called by aficionados of the emerging sport. MUni riders travel the same steep, treacherous trails as mountain bikers, except on one knobby tire instead of two, usually without brakes and never with gears.

It's a translation from German, with some resultant oddities, but on the whole I think it is comprehensive, and provides good learning progressions. The book covers learning steps, and some more advanced riding. It also has sections on specialty cycles (mainly giraffes), and a brief history section. I think that this is now one of the better books out on the subject, but could still be improved upon. Jasan Catan CATANZ47@snycorva.cortland.edu

Both ordered one. "It changed my life," Cotter said. And many others. Her friend stopped riding during the 25 years since, but Cotter kept on pedaling on one wheel, down small-town main streets in summer parades, through a Mall of America rotunda and around the world, spinning and twirling her way through China and Japan, Denmark and England. Her enthusiasm for riding, teaching and organizing, and her influence on younger brother Andy, helped transform the Twin Cities Unicycle Club into the planet's foremost unicycle club, complete with about 250 members and a gaggle of national and world champions. She owned a bicycle once, in high school. Now, the Columbia Heights home Cotter a past club president shares with Andy the current president who learned to ride on one of her borrowed cycles is filled with 100 or more unicycles. Together, their devotion to all things with one wheel has inspired enthusiasts from New Zealand and Germany to stay in Minnesota from three weeks to nine months to study and practice with the club.

    Hands On Unicycling
    Rock'n'Juggle
It all started in the Garden of Eden. Adam learned to juggle and Eve discovered the unicycle! But when He/She found out, He/She banished them from the Garden. Even so, they still got on very well together, and decided to form a meaningful relationship. Since then there have been unicycling jugglers and juggling unicyclists.
However, during the course of evolution, the process of mutation and natural selection made some jugglers and unicyclists forget that they could do both at the same time.
To prevent us all becoming victims of selection, this workshop series aims to give you a guided tour of the unicycling paradise, to demonstrate the potential of unicycling and how it can best be combined with juggling.
Skills you need for this workshop:
You should be able to juggle several objects, e.g. clubs, and be able to ride a unicycle straight ahead and around curves.
In this first part we're going to teach you how to rock on the spot, and how to combine that with juggling. So, fasten seat belts and off we go!
    Basic rocking or idling
In order to learn the basic rocking technique, it's best to find a doorframe, a wall or some climbing bars in a gym. Now grab your uni and consider which foot you normally mount with. This foot is going to be your favourite rocking foot too, i.e. this is the lower foot while idling. Now get on and hold onto the wall. Start to move the wheel alternately backwards and forwards by moving the pedals so that they describe a semi-circle, ending each time just before, or at the moment that, the pedal crank reaches the horizontal position.

    99. Unicycling Juggler, Animated Gif By Llizard Aka Ejm
unicycle and/or juggling animations Jun98 unicyclist rides from left to right{Jun98 unicyclist rides back and forth{ Jun98 unicycling juggler{ Jun98
    http://llizard.crosswinds.net/gifs/unicyc3.htm
I wanted to use the following colours for the animation but the animation ended up at a whopping 203kb.
By changing the colours (I'm not wild about the colour choice, but there it is) and eliminating the shadows,
    unicycle and/or juggling animations:
unicyclist rides from left to right

    unicyclist rides back and forth

    unicycling juggler

    unicycling juggler on tightrope
    ASCII-animation of juggling unicyclist

    another ASCII-animation of juggling unicyclist
I narrowed it down to 90.5kb... but then I discovered another aspect of the animation program and it is now a much more managable 27.9kb!
I just figured out how I can use any colour (within a choice of 256) and still keep the animation down to a reasonable size but haven't figured out how to use the program efficiently though, so it may be some time before I get around to doing the above animation with the colours that I prefer.

    Unicycling Tutorial
This page explains how i have learned to ride an unicycle . I publish it because it gives details that i didnt found in other tutorials. It is the text i would like to have read before learning it the hard way :). It intends to complete the others, so you should read some before. It may help a reader who has a balance as twisted as mine.
4 stages in the learning process
I see 4 stages in the learning process. i followed them in order.
  • To get the proper body position.
The back must be straight and aligned with the fork. I find it important because it helps when you want to turn. Your head must be straight too, look at the horizon not at the wheel.
  • To get the forward/backward balance.
Pedal once forward, then once backward. keep doing it until you are confortable.
  • To pedal smoothly.
On a bicycle, most people just push on the front leg toward the ground and got a 'hole' when the pedals are perdendicular to the ground. It isn't reasonable on a unicycle, it would make your ride very chaotic and you would probably lose your balance and fall. The trick is to keep contants pressure on the pedals, so dont completly release the back leg. When the pedals are perpendicular, push backward with the bottom foot, and forward with the top one. To move the ankles according to the direction of the thrust help a lot.
  • To get the left/right balance.
