Equestrian Vaulters Earn
Qualifying Scores
August 22, 2001 - Vaulters arrived from all corners of the United States. They said it couldn't be done. Some said the vaulters would not come. They were wrong. The opportunity for vaulters to showcase the partnership they have spent the last year perfecting with their horses brought them to Massachusetts. They overcame many obstacles; the distance was just one of many. The horses, the vaulters, the longeurs and coaches made the first American Vaulting Association (AVA) National Vaulting Championships held in the Northeast a spectacular event. Not every vaulter is eligible to participate. Most of the vaulters who were made the sacrifices necessary to undertake the journey. Two hundred and sixty-three (263) vaulters representing more than 40% of the vaulting clubs registered with the AVA arrived with hopes that they would leave Massachusetts one of the 17 division champions. Fifty-one vaulters competed in Gold and Silver divisions. For those competitors, becoming a champion was not the only goal. They each attempted to earn scores high enough to submit to USA Equestrian (formerly American Horse Shows Association) for a World Equestrian Games (WEG) 2002 qualifying score. Nineteen were successful. Eleven of the 40 women who participated in the USA Equestrian recognized classes earned qualifying scores for WEG 2002. Many of the names are familiar in the AVA. Vaulting enthusiasts have watched them develop their personal style. In the years of training, they have increased the difficulty of their freestyle and precision of their compulsories. Mari Inouye, Samantha Smith, Megan Benjamin, Jessica Ballenger, Greta Shryock, Shannyn Poer, Ginny Kaufmann, Alexis Garrod, Michele Cunningham, Alethea Shelton, and Emily Gleason and their horses await future selection trial events. Others may join the list. Only three female vaulters will be selected next summer to participate at WEG IV in Jerez, Spain in September 2002.

WEG IV will be held September 10-22 in Jerez, Spain with the vaulting portion of the competition September 12-15. The selection period for American vaulters will end June 9, 2002 and shortly following that the Vaulting Committee of USA Equestrian will name the three individual men, three individual females and one team eligible to enter the international event. Consideration has been requested by four American Vaulting Teams. Eight vaulters and four alternates are named to each team. Only one of those teams will be named to represent the United States and earn the title "Team USA". The final vaulting contingent will consist of one team of eight vaulters, 6 individual vaulters, and the selected vaulting horses. Riders, drivers, vaulters and horses representing the disciplines of Dressage, Driving, Endurance, Eventing, Reining, Show Jumping and Vaulting will make the journey to Spain.

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

SOUTH JORDAN Vanessa Vandevraye twirls her legs, toes pointed, in a sweeping circle, building momentum before propelling her body into a handstand.
She is like a gyrating gymnast on a pommel horse. Difference is, she is spinning, pivoting and pirouetting on a real horse. A real, live, cantering horse.
Vaulting, or gymnastics on horseback, is a centuries-old equestrian art in Europe and is somersaulting its way across the United States. It has landed in Utah, thanks to French riding instructors Vanessa and Jo'l Vandevraye.
The Vandevrayes say vaulting called la voltige in French can improve the overall skills of Utah riders at the Salt Lake County Equestrian Park in South Jordan, where the couple keep their horses and offer free vaulting clinics.

Woodside vaulter to compete in World Equestrian Games
By Andrea Gemmet
Almanac Staff Writer

Jill Main says she was always the sort of kid who could be found playing on top of the playground equipment. So it's little wonder the 20-year-old Woodside resident took to vaulting, a competitive sport involving gymnastic-like moves performed atop trotting horses.
When she was 9, a friend introduced her to the sport of vaulting, and after her first lesson she was immediately hooked, she says.
"It was the coolest thing I'd done up to that point," Main says.
This month, she will be vaulting as a member of the U.S. team competing in the World Equestrian Games, held in Jerez, Spain, September 10 to 23.
It will be her second appearance at the games, which are a sort of Olympics for equestrian sports. At the previous World Equestrian Games, held in Rome in 1998, she was a member of the U.S. vaulting team that took home a bronze medal.
Before the games start, she is spending a month in Germany training on a borrowed horse, because of the expense and difficulty of bringing horses from the United States, she says.

Intermediate Riding - Riders must have at least one course of instruction and ride comfortably at a walk and a trot. Class will emphasize refining the aides and building horse/rider communication. Private Lessons - Private and semi-private lessons are available in the Spring, Fall, and Winter months. Learn new skills at your own pace. Call us to set aside this time just for you! Vaulting Team - Vaulting is an exciting sport involving performing gymnastic moves on the back of a moving horse. Vaulters start with very basic, easy moves on a stationary barrel and progress to more complex skills on a horse, all in a very safe and controlled environment. There are numerous opportunities to compete, both locally and nationally. This activity makes competition avaliable to kids who may not be able to own a horse and compete in "regular" shows. Vaulting Team is open to all youngsters over the age of 8. We are associated with The American Vaulting Association Pony Preschool - Small group instruction requiring parents to lead. Young riders learn balance and confidence without worrying about controlling the horse. Later classes will introduce riders to steering, trotting, and trail riding.

It was a day for displaying trust Vaulting takes on international flavor in Saratoga By Jason Baker The relationship between a horse and rider centers on trust. Some of God's more powerful and graceful creatures, horses also posses their own unique personalities. They can be shy, they can be stubborn and they sometimes can be downright mean. But with proper handling, horses can develop qualities and characteristics almost human. A horse that is cared for and loved trusts and respects its rider with a capacity few animals can muster, the human animal included. You'd have to trust and respect someone to let him or her dance on your back. Mt. Valley View Ranch is a private equestrian camp for girls who love horses! We are located atop scenic Lookout Mountain in Northwest Georgia, and would love to have you join us in the Year 2003.
We offer a variety of fun and educational experiences for girls ages 8-17, but our primary focus is HORSEMANSHIP! We offer several riding programs and encourage each camper to participate in all of them: English, Western Stock Seat, Pony Club, Barrels(Gymkhana), and Vaulting.
There are two placid lakes for swimming, canoeing, and fishing. Campers live in large cabins and are supervised by an experienced counselor who soon becomes not only their mentor, but also their best friend. Staff members are usually young women who have grown up attending Valley View in the summers. English Hunt Seat Equitation is taught under CHA professional instruction, as are all Valley View riding programs. Separate hunt ring, barn, and specially schooled horses are available to all girls, beginner to advanced. Classes are arranged according to ability and incorporated into the Ranch program. Beginners learn to post at the trot and then do ground poles and cavalettes. As a rider gains confidence, she will practice equitation over jumps both in the ring and out in the field. We also offer dressage, cross-country jumping, and a mock fox hunt to those ranchers who accept the challenge! A camper can even bring her own horse and enjoy a new companionship amid our beautiful mountain scenery.
