Home Contact Results Newsletters ... Links Welcome to the AWF Masters website. Masters Weightlifting in Australia has been a relatively recent addition to the sport of weightlifting and consists of Male weightlifters over 35 years and Female weightlifters over the age of 30 years. Although relatively new in Australia, Masters weightlifting is highly organized in Europe and North America and is a rapidly growing aspect of the sport. Masters weightlifting caters for male and female athletes wanting to continue competing after their senior lifting has finished, some returning to the sport after a break, and also there are a number of competitors who have made a "late" start in the sport. Masters weightlifting received a boost when the World Masters Games were held in Brisbane in 1994 and has continued to grow. The World Masters Games in Melbourne next year will see a very competitive Australian Team comprised of many lifters who have not retired after senior lifting. Regular competitions are held in each state and each April State Championships are conducted. The Australian Championships are held in June and the World Championships in September; the State results being used for an Oceania Postal competition and the National results are used for a Commonwealth Postal Competition. Masters weightlifting is well organized in each state with a State Coordinator responsible for the advancement of the sport and organisation of regular competitions.

    http://www.vicweightlifting.com/AboutWeightlifting.htm
Home About Weightlifting The Coaching Team Mermet Stadium ... Downloads WHAT IS WEIGHTLIFTING ? Although commonly seen as a test of strength, Weightlifting is a sport which develops many other positive physical and psychological attributes in its participants. Qualities such as Flexibility, Speed of Movement, Co-ordination and Concentration are vital ingredients for success on the Weightlifting competition platform, and these qualities can be developed and enhanced by following a well planned Weightlifting training program under the guidance of a qualified coach. Many people watch the Weightlifters competing at the Olympic Games and marvel at their amazing feats of strength and power. But even these Champions were not born with a barbell in their hands. They too were once beginners who chose to take up the challenge and follow the path that has eventually taken them to the heights of international competition and brought them success at the elite level. Competition Competitors have to lift a weight called the barbell, which consists of a steel bar (weighing 20kg for a men’s, 15 kg for a women’s barbell) onto which rubber-coated and differently coloured weight discs are loaded and fastened with the help of collars (weighing 2.5 kg each). Competition takes place on wooden platforms four meters square where each athlete performs the lifts. Each performer is given three attempts at each lift with their highest successful weight on each exercise being added together to make a Total. In the Olympic Games and many International competitions placing in each bodyweight class is determined solely by these Totals; however at World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and some other International events, medals are also awarded for placing in each lift.

What is Flexibility and Why Should I Care?
    by
    Jason Daniel Henderson
A.F.A.A. Nationally Certified Personal Trainer and Professional Athlete Flexibility is the range of motion at a given joint. As an example, your shoulders should allow you to reach behind your back and touch both hands together. If this is not possible, you are not as flexible as you should be. This does not give you a license to force yourself to do this stretch. Flexibility must be attained in a controlled and safe manner. Flexibility is likely the most neglected aspect of physical fitness and should be a part of everybody's weekly fitness routine. What is the big deal about flexibility? Flexibility increases physical efficiency and performance. A flexible joint has the ability to move farther in its range and requires less energy to do so. Flexibility decreases risk of injury. Most professionals agree that increasing ROM (range of motion) decreases the resistance in various tissues, and a person is therefore less likely to incur injury by exceeding tissue extensibility, or maximum range of tissues during activity. Flexibility increases blood supply and nutrients to joint structures. Flexibility training increases tissue temperature which in turn increases circulation and nutrient transport. This allows greater elasticity of surrounding tissues.
