March 21, '02 This means WAH!
And so it begins, sort of. As I write this, US tanks charge north towards Baghdad, but the much-awaited mass-mudering hellfire of missiles has yet to flutter like gentle snowflakes across the city, bestowing the sweet kiss of democracy and transition to a better world for every fellow or lass lucky enough to be underneath. Still, I don't feel reassured. In fact, I feel kinda Though I gotta admit, I hardly suspected the Bushites would have the self-control to hold off the "burn everything" button for this long. Wheelchair Basketball: On Track for the 2002 Kitakyushu Gold Cup
The Japanese Wheelchair Basketball Federation (JWBF) and International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) have signed the contract for the 2002 Kitakyushu Gold Cup. The JWBF has involved an incredible array of organizations to support the event. They include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Education, Culture and Science Ministries, the Health and Welfare Ministries, and members of the Diet. On the prefecture level, the Educational Agency, the Police Agency and prefectural assembly members are involved. Kitakyushu City, its Board of Education and municipal assembly members have joined this great cooperative effort. The JWBF heads an impressive list of sports organizations committed to the success of the Gold Cup. The 2002 Kitakyushu Gold Cup marks only the second time that the men’s world wheelchair basketball championship and the women’s wheelchair basketball championship will be played concurrently in the same venue. The Energy Australia Gold Cup (Sydney 1998) was the first Gold Cup to feature both women’s and men’s world championships. The USA is the reigning world champion on the men’s side and Canada holds the women’s world championship crown.

wheelchair basketball for the nondisabled. Version française. I love basketball, and I love playing basketball. So I happen to play in a wheelchair. So what ?
wheelchair basketball for the non-disabled
Life goes on...
I had my most recent motorcycle accident not so long ago, back in 1986. I left the rehab center about nine months later and found out that the world around me did not look so different. Life had gone on without me but I just kept on going because I certainly didn't feel any different.
Who is handicapped ?
In fact, I have never considered myself to be handicapped, inspite of my spinal cord injury and an amputation. Whenever there is something I want to do, I go out and do it, and nobody is going to tell me I can't.
That's fun. Let's go do it !
While lying on my back in the hospital, I figured it would be fun to hitch-hike across the Sahara Desert. So one of the first things I did after leaving rehab was to fly to West Africa and hitch-hike back home across the desert. top of page
Nobody. Never.
I have travelled to a lot of places since 1986, within Europe, in Africa, in North and South America... During all those trips, I never let anybody tell me that I was too disabled to do something I had set my mind to do.

Men's Wheelchair Basketball Season
by Paige Lewis
As with the Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team, a lot of changes took place with the Men,s team. Primarily, it was a coaching change. Maureen Mausser took over the challenge of the Head Coach position. The name might be familiar, Maureen has been a graduate assistant for the basketball team for the previous two seasons. Maureen was assisted by Josh Fabian when he was not playing. The other change was in the size of the team. The Illini competed against teams twice as large as their six member roster. Though, that did not seem to intimidate them. They concluded their season 24-9, their best finish in the past several years. Although the rankings are not announced yet from the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, the Illini should be ranked tenth. Personal successes throughout the season were twofold. First, Rob Knight was selected as one of the United States Paralympic Men's Wheelchair Basketball Team members. Lastly, Josh Fabian was voted to be a member of the Midwest Sectional All Tournament Team. The Illini are looking forward to next season, but they do not look forward to the loss of their seniors Josh Fabian, Jamie Sharples, Keith Davis, and Jamie Nance. They have all contributed greatly to the success of the team for the past four years. Thanks for your hard work and dedication.
