Life has become a whirlwind tour for U.S. wheelchair tennis champ Campbell teacher Sharon Clark prepares to take on the world of tennis-on-wheels By Suzanne Barnecut Even though she's been on the go almost continually for a monthshe recently returned from the Japan Open tournament and is on her way to RenoSharon Clark's home is spotlessly clean. There's no luggage shoved into corners or extra tennis balls rolling across the hardwood floors. A quick glance around her cozy living room reveals candles lining the mantlepiece, a rocking chair snug between two windows and Japanese artbought at last year's Japan Openhanging above a plush navy-blue couch. Clark, a substitute teacher who works in the Campbell Union School District, is the United States' reigning Wheelchair Tennis champion. She wheels easily about her house, then hoists herself onto the couch to explain how her love affair with tennis began by accident in 1986. Clark grew up playing soccer and running track, but in March of her senior year of high school, a ski trip with friends changed the course of her life. The car slid on a patch of ice and overturned, leaving Clark with a broken back. She was 17 years old.

Wheelchair Tennis News , Dec 2000 The Wheelchair Tennis and Super Senior (age 75 +/- ) exhibitions put on by Jay Krouse, Director of Tennis at the Boothbay Region YMCA, on October 21, was quite successful. It attracted about 60 spectators. Wheelchair tennis players were Dennis Fitzgibbons (Yarmouth), Zach Beaulieu (Augusta), Wes Smith (Bangor) and Dick Lane (Hudson, NH). Super Senior players were Del Fuller (Brunswick), Clark Johnson (Boothbay Region), Brad Jones (Boothbay Region), George Robbins (New Harbor), Debbie Smith (Camden), Kelevi Oittinen (Camden), and Audrey Post (Boothbay Region). The event was filmed and aired by Channel 5 for several days thereafter. The three new indoor tennis courts at the Damariscotta YMCA will have a Grand Opening in late February. It is anticipated that with these three new indoor courts, plus the two new indoor courts at Boothbay, which is about a 25-minute drive away, USTA League matches can be held at the combined facilities. Included in the Grand Opening ceremonies will be a wheelchair tennis exhibition and a Super Seniors able-bodied exhibition (age 75 +/- ). Numerous other wheelchair tennis events are planned for 2001. The first is an interstate match on April 21 at PAC, then a combined Wheelchair Tennis Beginners Day with Maine Handicapped Skiing on June 9 at PAC, a three-day summer camp June 22-24 at MIT, an interstate match at the Pilot Pen Touranemts in August at New Haven, CT, participation in the Boston Mayor's Tournament, also in August, another interstate match in NH in the fall, and several more exhibitions both in ME and NH including the Old Port Festival.

For some, "getting back up" might involve doing something intellectual, others play sports. It provides opportunities for many disabled people to enjoy competitive tennis, as well as to share experiences with both able-bodied and disabled friends of all age groups. The International Wheelchair Tennis Federation (IWTF) was created in 1988 to promote the sport of wheelchair tennis worldwide. The original eight founding member nations have been joined by more than forty-five other countries. It is estimated that wheelchair tennis is played in more than seventy countries. On January 1, 1998 the IWTF was fully integrated into the International Tennis Federation (ITF), making it the first disabled sport to achieve such a union at an international level. Basic Information Rules of Wheelchair Tennis Rules of Play The game of wheelchair tennis follows the same rules as able-bodied tennis as endorsed by the ITF except that the wheelchair tennis player is allowed two bounces of the ball. The player must return the ball before it hits the ground a third time. The wheelchair is part of the body and all applicable ITF rules that apply to a player’s body shall apply to the wheelchair.

Wheelchair tennis!?! How do you play tennis in a wheelchair? This is a question that every wheelchair tennis player has heard at one time or another. The only difference in the rules between wheelchair tennis and regular tennis is that wheelchair players can let the ball bounce twice if they need to (only the first bounce needs to be in). But any wheelchair player will tell you that it goes way beyond that. The added complexities that come with having to do everything with their hands and arms makes this game a whole new sport. One of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the world with over 3000 players worldwide, wheelchair tennis stands out among wheelchair sports in that it lets able-bodied and disabled players play against each other on the same court. No longer do all of the participants need to be in a wheelchair like most other wheelchair sports. A disabled player can play against an able-bodied player, or even with an able-bodied player in a format called up/down doubles. This format lets families and friends play tennis together and helps break down some of the stereotypes and barriers that often limit interaction between the wheelchair bound and the upright world.
