Wheelchair tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging of all wheelchair sports. To meet this demand, the USTA Kentucky offers programs geared towards the wheelchair player.
Kentucky will host the 4th Annual Bluegrass Wheelchair Tennis Camp and Tournament in Louisville August 22-24, 2003. Plans are now being made for a wheelchair tennis instructor's clinic, a winter program, a spring camp, a summer program, and the annual tournament. See the Schedule (link below) for program details.
The rules for wheelchair tennis are the same as stand-up tennis, except the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces of the ball (the first being in play).
Wheelchair tennis provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in activities with their peers and family, whether able-bodied or disabled. Playing wheelchair tennis adds to socialization and the normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury. Proficient wheelchair users can play and compete against stand-up players and USA Tennis Leagues.
A wheelchair tennis player must have a medically diagnosed, mobility-related disability, with a substantial or total loss of function in one or more extremities. In wheelchair tennis, the player must master the game of tennis and the supreme use of the wheelchair. Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability.

"My Fifteen Minutes of Fame", by Bill Eddings var site="sm2bata" About Wheelchair Tennis Tennis is a difficult game as so many of us know, but imagine having to push a wheelchair while holding a racquet and still hit the ball. It is at times overwhelming to imagine how people can do this, but they do. They have been doing it since 1976 when Brad Parks of California invented the game. He wanted to have a game that he could play with his able bodied friends. By giving himself two bounces he found he was able to play competitively with them. Today, the two bounce rule is the only difference in the rules for the wheelchair player. The boom was not limited to the United States, internationally the game took off as well. In 1985 The World Team Cup (wheelchair's version of the Davis Cup) was initiated. Twenty-two nations competed and the US was victorious. Today there are over forty nations competing, including international qualifying rounds, due to growth in countries with teams. The 1999 World Team Cup was played at Flushing Meadows, the site of the US Open. The 2000 competition will be held in Paris, France. The growth of the game has lured some of the biggest tennis governing bodies to get involved. The USTA has taken charge of the US tour and development of wheelchair tennis. On January 1, 1998, the International Wheelchair Tennis Federation was fully integrated into the ITF (governing body of the professional tour), making it the first disabled sport to achieve such a union on an international level.

BRITISH WHEELCHAIR TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION
(BWTTA)
Table Tennis has been a Paralympic Games sport since 1960 but was one of the earliest sports introduced in the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury patients.
Table Tennis is a popular indoor activity because it is a keenly competitive game, requires little space and is inexpensive. It is also easy to learn and beginners can have great fun playing at a recreational level. Table Tennis improves the concentration, reaction speed and coordination of those who play and has long since been used in the rehabilitation of people with a disability.
Table Tennis is one of the sports that wheelchair players can competitively play against an able-bodied opponent and many wheelchair players are members of table tennis clubs in their communities.
Competitions are grouped into male and female, singles and doubles with players playing in categories based on their level of disability. There is also an 'Open' competition were all classes compete to become the overall Champion.
To compensate for being seated when playing, some wheelchair players use a higher than normal chair to play. Those with limited grip use an elastic bandage or strapping to increase grip of the bat.
