Partners Best viewed with Peninsula District Softball Picks 2003 Woodside has talent, but unproven depth By Dave Johnson Daily Press Woodside reigns as the Peninsula District softball champion and returns the area's best player, yet Wolverine coach Mike Tallon scoffs at being considered the favorite. Coaching head games? Not really. True, pitcher Micki Rodriguez can win games by herself, as her .608 batting average and four no-hitters last spring would suggest. Juniors Jen Nuzzo and Akema Cooper, who played basketball this past season, are solid athletes. But Rodriguez, Nuzzo and Cooper are the only returning starters from a 20-3 team that lost in the Eastern Region semifinals. A couple players Tallon expected to have back elected not to play. So the Wolverines go into this season with more question marks than you'd expect of a defending champ.

Managing Concussions In High School Sports: A Proposed Model By Lindsay Barton In an article in the July - September 2001 special issue of the Journal of Athletic Training devoted to concussions in athletes, Christopher Randolph, Ph.D., of Loyola University Medical Center and the Chicago Neurological Institute, proposes a model for managing concussions in high school athletes. Recognizing that obtaining baseline neuropsychological testing is probably unrealistic from a practical standpoint - at least until well-validated computerized tests become available - and that the need to obtain baseline scores on the Standardized Assessment Of Concussions (SAC) - advocated by other experts - was also debatable, Dr. Randolph proposes instead relying on a sideline evaluation of the athlete using the SAC to determine impairment (which he conservatively sets as a score of 25 or less out of a possible 30), which will determine whether the athlete can be allowed to return to an ongoing game as well as follow-up management:

How Safe Is Your Child's High School Athletic Program: Ten Things Parents Should Look For By Lindsay Barton The National Association of Athletic Trainers recommends that parents look for the following ten things in evaluating the safety aspects of a high school athletic program:
  • A comprehensive emergency plan A full time, on site, qualified athletic health care provider (i.e. trainer) available to student athletes at the school on a daily basis who has received training in the prevention, immediate care, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

The verdict was based upon the phrase "under God," which was added in 1954 to show that the United States was opposed to communism. PROVIDENCE You can't go home again? Don't tell that to Laurence Young, the former Hope High School basketball player who will be playing for Rider tonight at Brown's Pizzitola Center. Don't tell that to Laurence Young, who returns home tonight as one of only a handful of local kids playing Division I college basketball, one of our success stories. But this is not about Young's homecoming, however sweet it is. This is about Young getting a chance to leave home in the first place. "He was totally overlooked in high school," says Hope boys basketball coach Dave Nyblom. "I couldn't get anyone to come see him." Part of that part, certainly, is that Young didn't become a Rhode Island high school star until midway through his junior year, and that was on a team that didn't get a lot of attention. Part of that, certainly, is due to the fact Young didn't play a lot of AAU basketball, the showcase for college recruiters. Part of it was that Young was 6-foot-2 and skinny in a basketball world where there are innumerable kids who are 6-foot-2 and skinny.
