Drugs Sports. In the last ten years, the use of drugs in sports has becomeepidemic and their use is not only limited to elite athletes.
http://www.cameron.edu/admin/athletics/training/wpdrugssports.htm
Twenty percent of athletes in Western countries admit to using drugs. When you're watching sports on television, you have no idea if what you are seeing is the athlete's true ability, or drugs on display. A program of random drug tests, education, treatment, and discipline would cost an estimated one million dollars annually. But one million dollars may be a small price to pay for fair play and good health. That's why random drug tests would be extremely effective if taken by the athletes, not only throughout the season, but throughout the rest of the year as well. Drugs shouldn't be tolerated on any team, in any sport. Steroids and other performance enhancing drugs have many health risks. Risks with steroids include heart disease, liver tumors, and edema (abnormal fluid accumulation in body tissues). The athletes should ask themselves, "Is this really worth my life?" Glen Sather, Edmonton Oilers general manager and coach, says, "In my mind I'm absolutely convinced there is no drug abuse problem on my team." Sather could be sadly mistaken.

This is the First Edition of WARNING: Drugs in Sports . The purpose of this handbook is to provide basic information regarding (1) the misuse of drugs by some athletes to enhance their performance in competitive sports and (2) the potential dangers to which these athletes are exposing themselves. This misuse of drugs of in sports is called Doping in Sports. This practice by athletes is inappropriate, morally wrong, foolish, and can be lethal. By taking these chemical substances the athletes are willing to place themselves in harms way. WARNING: Drugs in Sports Chapter 5 is the largest section in the handbook. It contains individual drug monographs which (a) show the name of the drug, (b) indicate the common trade name of the drug, (c) state the classification to which the drug belongs, (d) whether or not the drug is banned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), (e) lists the drug's approved therapeutic use, (f) indicate the inappropriate use of the drug by some athletes, (g) indicate some of the adverse reactions that can occur by the improper use of the drug, and (h) contain a few comments regarding the drug and some combination products if they exist. In addition, Chapter 5 has a section that lists a number of Over-The-Counter (OTC) preparations (that an athlete may purchase to treat such conditions as a cold, the flu, or allergies) and contains a drug that is banned by the USOC.

The Dope on Performance-Enhancing Drugs in Sports Some doctors have played a 'significant, and largely unacknowledged' role in the doping of athletes, an expert claims. By Adam Marcus
MONDAY, July 22 (HealthScoutNews) Performance-enhancing drugs are a blight on sports perpetrated by a few bad seeds looking for a shortcut around the competition, right? That's mostly true, but it's not the whole score, says one expert who argues that doctors have played a "significant, and largely unacknowledged" role in the doping of athletes. "The stereotype is that the sport medicine establishment is 100 percent on the side of cleaning drugs out of sports. The fact is that's just not true," says John Hoberman, a professor of Germanic studies at the University of Texas in Austin who has made a second career out of exploring the doping problem in athletics. Hoberman, author of Mortal Engines: The Science of Performance and the Dehumanization of Sport , explores the historical role of physicians in prescribing performance-enhancing drugs in an article in the July issue of the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine His study, one of several in the issue that deal with the theme of drug use in sports, reveals a thin but persistent trickle of ambivalence in medicine toward steroids and other doping chemicals.

Drugs Interactive Module ... Can anabolic steroids affect an athlete's health? What are anabolic steroids?
Steroids are hormones. Anabolic steroids or more precisely, anabolic/androgenic steroids are also referred to as ergogenic or performance-enhancing drugs. They are synthetic derivatives of testosterone, a natural male hormone.
  • Anabolic = growing or building Androgenic = masculinization; developing male sexual characteristics.
Most healthy males produce between 2 to 10 milligrams of testosterone a day. The hormone's anabolic effect promotes retention of nitrogen, and this helps muscle growth. It helps the male reproductive system to grow during puberty, assists with the growth of body hair, and the deepening of the voice. Today, anabolic steroids are chemically manufactured. Steroids can be administered by injection, or can be taken orally. Injectable steroids are longer lasting in the body and can be detected in the body for a longer period of time. How do anabolic steroids work in the body?

Student athletes who use or intend to use OTC drugs should verify permission to use these drugs with the team athletic trainer or team physician, because some OTC drugs contain stimulants which may result in a positive urinalysis. The majority of the side effects related to these OTC drugs are related to CNS - resulting in headaches, nervousness, irritability, and insomnia, agitation, confusion, paranoia, hypertension and arrhythmia (Wagner, 1991).

Rising clash over drugs in sports
  • Canada's loss of the gold highlights the gap between strict amateurs and lax pros.
  • Tom Regan (tom@csmonitor.com)

Special to The Christian Science Monitor HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA Baseball slugger Mark McGwire and hockey goalie Steve Vezina share more than the distinction of being world-class athletes. As professionals, they both openly use performance enhancing drugs. But when Mr. Vezina switched his ice skates for a pair of inlines to compete in the just concluded Pan American Games, his play was governed by different rules. And he cost the Canadians a gold medal. Yet he sounds unrepentant. "I'm a professional athlete and an ice hockey player first, and you're allowed to take these substances" Vezina said. "Mark McGwire is the best hitter in the National League, but he was proud to say he was taking andro [androstenedione], and he was a hero. I take a little bit to help me get ready for ice hockey and it seems it would be less bad if I robbed a bank." DISQUALIFIED: The Canadian inline hockey team was stripped of its gold medal after goalie Steve Vezina tested positive for steroids.

DRUGS IN SPORTS AT LEAST 8 TYPES of drugs have been used to gain athletic advantage in sports competition. One type, the anabolic steroids, consists of 2 subtypes, the anabolic proteins and the anabolic steroids. Anabolism means to "build up". (Contrast with catabolism.) ERYTHROPOIETIN (EPO), is an anabolic protein clinically prescribed to help anemic patients build up tissues such as red blood cells, thereby increasing their oxygen supply. EPO has now been usurped by athletes seeking increased stamina and performance in endurance contests such as cycling and long distance running. The pharmacologic rationale is apparent.
ALL STEROIDS HAVE the fused, clyclic molecular structure termed the steroid nucleus. And, they are all chemically related to the natural body steroid testosterone, the male sex hormone. Anabolic steroids such as nandrolone and oxymetholone are prescribed by physicians for patients who need to increase their appetite or their tissue-building processes generally. Weight lifters, football linemen and others are now using anabolic steroids in the anticipation of building body mass and gaining a competitive edge. Testosterone itself is used supposedly to enhance sports competitiveness. So also are many other synthetic anabolic steroids not found naturally occurring. A few of these are: clostebol, Equipoise, ethylstrenol, kabolin, methandriol, Diabinol, Anavar, Winstrol (stanozolol) and Finaject. (Trade names are in cap.)
