Athletes seek every competitive advantage and the rewards of success at top level are great, both financially and in personal glory. There is huge pressure to train longer and harder and to take a scientific approach to nutrition, fluid, and electrolyte balance, to seek every biomechanical and psychological advantage. It is almost inevitable that some will seek an advantage through drugs such as anabolic steroids, dietary supplements, and erythropoietin (EPO). "Despite Sensitive Testing, Athletes Still Dope to Win" Insight on the News, March 15, 1999 v15 i10 p42(1) According to Karen Goldberg Goff, society competitive sport has become increasingly more rewarding monetarily nowadays. As a result, million of athletes resort to drug-like substances to increase endurance and performance. These drug-like substances are DHEA, creatine, and androstenedione, which are all classified as the dietary supplements. The uses of these substances are implicitly encouraged through lucrative contracts, rewards, and fame. Although many professional sport organizations banned their use, many athletes are not being caught due to ineffective testing. In many of these cases, human growth hormones, which are hardly to detect, are often used. Athletes justified the use of drugs, dietary supplement, or growth hormones in the faces of ethical and legal issues because many have devoted their entire life to exceling. The combined effect of high pressure and the coveting of money, and fame will cause many athletes to overlook their personal well-being and health.

Over the years, the spirit of amateur and professional sports has been shaken to its foundation by these performance-enhancing substances. Most athletes today look for help from a wide variety of pills, ointments and injections. Whether they are seeking stimulation, relief from pain, performance enhancement or stress reduction, they all have their own magic formula and see no reason why they shouldn't use them. The extent to which drugs are used in sports is still largely unknown - the subject remains taboo and too controversial for the sporting world to confront.
