WEST VALLEY CITY Utah's hosting of the 2002 Winter Games should produce lasting benefits for the economy, but it is too early to speculate on just how far-reaching the Olympics' financial ripple will prove to be.

46. The Greek City-states And The Religious Festival
A brief examination of the religious dimension of the ancient olympic games, from the Perseus Project.
http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/Olympics/rel.html
The Greek city-states and the religious festival
One difference between the ancient and modern Olympic Games is that the ancient games were played within the context of a religious festival. The Games were held in honor of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, and a sacrifice of 100 oxen was made to the god on the middle day of the festival. Athletes prayed to the gods for victory, and made gifts of animals, produce, or small cakes, in thanks for their successes. According to legend, the altar of Zeus stood on a spot struck by a thunderbolt, which had been hurled by the god from his throne high atop Mount Olympus, where the gods assembled. Some coins from Elis had a thunderbolt design on the reverse, in honor of this legend.

Photograph by Maria Daniels, courtesy of the Dewing Numismatic Foundation Over time, the Games flourished, and Olympia became a central site for the worship of Zeus. Individuals and communities donated buildings, statues, altars and other dedications to the god. The most spectacular sight at Olympia was the gold and ivory cult statue of Zeus enthroned, which was made by the sculptor Pheidias and placed inside the temple. The statue was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and stood over 42 feet high. A spiral staircase took visitors to an upper floor of the temple, for a better view of the statue.

Sports Commentator - Every 2nd Wednesday AskMen.com Specials Pages: Today's Articles Once again, four years have passed and the world is ready for another global reconciliation that we call the Olympics this time Summer Olympics. At the turn of the millennium, Sydney will be host to the 27th Summer Olympic Games. But like in any edition of this gigantic celebration of sports, money and finance always play an important role in the equation. Whether it has to with ticket sales, sponsors, advertisers or the just plain deal-with-it things that come along. As the opening day for the Olympics on Sept. 15th is quickly upon us, ticket sales are not doing as well as anticipated. The first day of over-the-counter ticket sales did not live up to its reputation of generating a large turnover last Friday, June 16th. To spruce up the event, organizers put more than 440,000 Olympic Games tickets on sale for baseball, sailing, boxing, diving, and gymnastics, to name a few. The Sydney organizers were counting on a heavy turnout for the opening of the walk-by first box office recently where avid sports fans can step right up to the counter and purchase Olympic tickets. Only about a dozen individuals, however, actually waited in line to be the first ones to get their hands on tickets.

What do the Olympic rings mean? The colours of the interlinked Olympic rings were chosen by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) , to represent the union of the 5 continents , Australia , Africa , America , Asia and Europe and further signify the meeting of the worlds athletes at the Olympic Games. The plain white background of the Olympic flag is symbolic of peace throughout the games . The five colours of the rings from left to right are blue, black and red across the top with yellow and green along the bottom , these colours may be found on most flags of the world and officially hold no other particular significance , although some believe each colour represents a particular continent Blue =Europe Yellow =Asia Black =Africa Green =Australia Red =America The Olympic rings are the official trademark of the I.O.C. What is the Olympic creed? The Olympic creed was first stated in 1896 by the founder of the modern Olympic games , Baron Pierre de Coubertin , the words of the creed are as follows; "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

Tuesday, March 18 Athletes injured during the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games have the benefit of world-class digital health imaging equipment and services from Kodak for prompt diagnosis. The University of Utah medical center will staff an Olympic Polyclinic facility at the Olympic Village, as well as satellite first aid centers. Kodak's state-of-the-art art diagnostic imaging equipment will allow Olympic medical staff to acquire and view digital images to help diagnose life- and career-threatening injuries, and muscle and ligament tears. Kodak's technologies enable Olympic Polyclinic doctors to provide fast and accurate diagnosis and begin treatment. Listen to Dr. Patrick Schamash describes the critical role infoimaging plays in diagnosing athletes' injuries. (.mp3 format)
Infoimaging in sports medicine can spell the difference between a competitor and a spectator. During the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, a young gymnast experienced recurring ankle pain that didn't respond to treatment. With the help of Kodak technology, doctors correctly diagnosed the true problem and provided proper treatment, enabling her to resume competition.
Kodak's Health Imaging division served 1,410 athletes through a total of 1,948 exams at the Sydney Olympics. Kodak anticipates many more exams at the Salt Lake City Games because of the nature of winter sports.
