NOTE:
The Flint Journal (dated 9-9-97): Los Angeles - Brushing aside the pleas of some teachers, parents, and alumni to keep cherished traditions, the Los Angeles Board of Education voted to eliminate all references to American Indians in the names and images of school mascots. The 6-0 vote, followed by an American Indian victory drum ceremony, gives three high schools and one middle school a year to replace their current Indian mascots. AIM Arizona has endorsed this campaign... "We've been respectful of Indians and do not
descecrate their imagery."
  • "We try to stay away from the use of warpaint."
  • "...imagery that promotes stereotypes is discouraged."
  • "I may not be a native american but I sure am glad I am a Redskin"
  • "I paint my face every year and I'm not making fun of them."
  • "[Native Americans] should be glad we keep [tradition] alive. We give them respect by naming our school after them."

Native American Sports Mascots
Brooks column for 3 Sep 2001
Don’t use Native Americas for team logos and mascots.
“We believe respect for self and others is foremost,” is a part of Vallejo High School’s vision statement. Beside that statement is a picture of an Apache Indian. They named the Apache for the school’s team name, logo and mascot. Does anyone see a contradiction there? As children we played the game of cowboys and Indians. Mostly everybody wanted to be the cowboys, because the game always ended with the Indians defeated and dead. Why did most American children believe those were the right rules for the game? Movies, television shows and cheap cowboy books about the old west taught them that it was not just okay, but good and honorable to kill Indians singularly and in groups. Glamorizing that wanton destruction of Native Americans and their culture was American cultural message about that group’s worth. The cowboys in those old movies spat out the word ‘Redskin’ as both an offensive name and a negative racist description for the indigenous people. The impact of those old film’s one-sided negative characterizations of Native Americans persist today. Americans were not satisfied to just destroy many of those Native American nations as functioning cultures. They continued to dishonor them by using them in logos, and as images of fierceness for amateur and professional sports teams. It is unconscionable that we citizens allow the sports team in our nation’s capital to call themselves “Redskins.”

No Peace Pipe for 'Racist' Sports Mascots Campus Report Staff CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, IL Fed up with professional and collegiate sports teams appropriating Native American symbols and imagery in a "racist" manner, activists demanding an end to such practices coverged on the University of Illinois campus this spring. The first annual Conference on the Elimination of Racist Mascots (CERM) was held from April 3-4 and attended by hundreds. The gathering was sponsored by the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media (NCRSM) and held in conjunction with a loose confederation of left-wing groups. The conference allowed activists an opportunity to develop new strategies and "empower" radical organizations in their struggle against sports mascots they believe demean Native Americans and other ethnic groups. Energized by recent triumphs—St. John’s University’s nickname, for instance, was changed from the Red Men to the Red Storm—conference-goers set their sights on the mascot of the University of Illinois, Chief Illiniwek. So far, however, attempts to ban the Chief—like a similar past effort to remove the "Minuteman" nickname from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst ("a racist, sexist white man with a gun")—have failed. Students, alumni, and state legislators have decried the proposal as the product of an overdose of political correctness.

THE MASCOT ISSUE
Page created February 17, 1999; Last update - December 16, 2002
Maintained by Lisa Mitten This page is intended to be a compilation of web sites and writings on the issue of Indian mascots used by sports teams. Although some of these sites exist on other web pages that I maintain, I felt the time was right to compile these into one place in order to help people find them. As you may have heard, the U.S. Justice Department has sent a letter to Erwin High School in North Carolina notifying them that they intend to investigate charges of racial harassment as a result of their Indian mascot. This important action by the federal government as well as Susan Shown Harjo's Morningstar Foundation's lawsuit against the Washington Redskins' trademark of the redskins image are finally helping to build momentum among non-Indians to support us in this issue.
  • The American Anthropological Association (AAA), the major professional organization for anthropologists and archaeologists working with Native peoples, PASSED an anti-mascot resolution at its business meeting on November 20, 1999, in Chicago. Inspired by the earlier action of the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas , the resolution to be voted on by the AAA membership reads as follows: PART A: We, the members of the American Anthropological Association, call upon all educators and administrators of educational institutions to stop promoting the stereotypical representation of American Indian people through the use of sports mascots. The persistence of such officially sanctioned, stereotypical presentations humiliates American Indian people, trivializes the scholarship of anthropologists, undermines the learning environment for all students, and seriously compromises efforts to promote diversity on school and college campuses.

Editorial Guest Editorial Letters to the Editor Write a letter ... Contact Us SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 30, 2000 NEWS SPORTS BUSINESS TAKE 5 ... TOURISM Indian mascots an idea whose time has passed
"I see that the way Indian mascots are used today is about 'dysconscious racism' and a form of cultural violence. This includes many Indigenous Peoples as well. Dysconscious racism is a form of racism that accepts dominant White norms and privileges. For example, if you have seen these racial antics and negative behaviors portrayed by Indian mascots hundreds of times for most part of your life, you may become absolutely numb to it." Dr. Cornel Pewewardy "Why Educators Can't Ignore Indian Mascots" Some years ago when he was a principal at an elementary school in Minnesota, Dr. Cornel Pewewardy rewarded a group of kindergarteners and first graders by taking them on a field trip to the Metrodome to see the Minnesota Vikings play the Washington Redskins. The "reward" ended up penalizing the children, not for their behavior, but simply because they were Native American. As they were being escorted through the stadium, a group of adults decked out in fake war bonnets and face paint began taunting them, yelling "Woo woo woo!" chants at them. The children began crying and said they were afraid. "I didn't think adults could be so belligerent to kids," Pewewardy says as he recalls the incident.
