Hypnosis and Sports Psychology
As one visualizes for example, the perfect back swing, all of the muscles needed to make it perfect, every muscle needed to accomplish it moves imperceptibly in the correct way. With continued practice, these same perfected movements are easily transferred to the golf course, baseball diamond, or in lifting weights to the field or competition.
Athletes from children’s and community or corporate teams to professionals are finding and using hypnosis to improve their performance. Three of the major factors which make this possible are the ability to improve focus and concentration, to relieve unnecessary stress while leaving sufficient "edge" to perform optimally, and to practice through visualization all of the moves needed to make the desired improvements to perform better. One can learn how to get into "The Zone" at will with training and the use of Light/Sound technology. Though most do not want it generally known, many individual athletes and some pro teams have a hypnotherapist with whom they consult regularly or in some cases travel with them to coach them in the use of hypnosis to improve and maintain their performance. What is Hypnosis?

EMDR probes nervous system, releasing trauma

by Jamie Talan
Staff Writer All Philip Gutterman needed was a bogey on the final hole of the 1999 U.S. Amateur qualifying tournament at Woodcrest Country Club in Syosset and he would have been on his way to Pebble Beach for the prestigious U.S. Amateur tournament. Facing a short par-4 over water on the 18th hole, Gutterman drove his ball straight into the pond. He wound up with a double bogey and without an invitation to Pebble Beach. "It bothered me for months," Gutterman said. Issues developed in his otherwise impressive game. He began having problems with one club in particular, the 3-wood. He couldn't stop himself from topping the ball, an embarrassing blunder for a 2-handicap golfer. He had the yips. It's a bizarre sports affliction that turns something natural-a simple throw back to the pitcher or a short putt -into something harrowing. And like a nightmare, it repeats. Gutterman sought help for his yips and found it with clinical psychologist David Grand.

77. Putting Your Head In The Game
After a little research into sports psychology, though, I realized these tipsand strategies could also benefit weekend and amateur athletes like me.

In Motion Putting Your Head In the Game By Chris Lindsley
Special to The Washington Post
Friday, January 26, 2001; Page WE60 I DECIDED to run the 1995 Marine Corps Marathon having never run more than 10 miles at one time in my life. A minor obstacle that dedicated training would overcome, or so I kept telling myself. Things went well at first, as I gradually increased my weekly long run from 10 to 18 miles. There, though, I hit a wall I couldn't break through. I knew I needed to log some 20-mile plus training runs, but I'd reach 18 and stop. Physically, I felt as if I could keep going, but mentally I was finished. Not surprisingly, the same thing happened in the race, as I ended up walking much of the last eight miles. That experience taught me that physical preparation alone wasn't enough. I had to prepare mentally as well. I knew professional athletes worked with sports psychologists to improve focus, concentration and confidence and otherwise sharpen their mental game. After a little research into sports psychology, though, I realized these tips and strategies could also benefit weekend and amateur athletes like me. "Anyone can apply and benefit from the principles we use," says sports psychologist Wayne Hurr, a staff psychologist at the Georgetown University Counseling Service and a consultant to the Georgetown athletic department, who also works with professional and Olympic athletes. "Seeing a sports psychologist can be particularly helpful when you notice a performance slump. We look to see what's happening. Is negative thinking affecting your performance or are you visualizing a bad outcome rather than the outcome you want to happen? Then we provide techniques to deal with the problem and, hopefully, optimize performance."
