Ancient India's Contribution to ARCHITECTURE AND CIVIL ENGINEERING
    "The Indian way of life
provides the vision of the natural, real way of life.
We veil ourselves with unnatural masks.
On the face of India are the tender expressions
which carry the mark of the Creator’s hand. " - George Bernard Shaw, Famous British Author The Science of Architecture and Civil Construction was known in Ancient India as Sthapatya-Shastra. The word Sthapatya is derived from the root word Sthapana i.e. 'to establish'. The technique of arhitecture was both a science and an art, hence it is also known as Sthapatya-kala, the word Kala means an art. Panel at Khajuraho
    created in the 10th century
in Madhya Pradesh in Central India
From very early times the construction of temples, palaces, rest houses and other civil construction was undertaken by professional architects known as Sthapati. Even during the Vedic times, there exIsted professionals who specialised in the technique of constructing chariots and other heavy instruments of war. These professionals have been referred to in the Rig Veda as Rathakara which literally means 'chariot maker'. The excavations of the ruins at Mohenjodaro and Harrappa (today in Pakistan) proved the existence of a developed Urban civilisation in India. The indus valley civilization is dated around 3000 B.C. Thus since the last 5000 years. India has had an urban civilisation. The existence of an urban civilization presumes the existence of well devel oped techniques of architecture and construction.

    59. A Century Of Finnish Architecture
Illustrated article for Virtual Finland by MarjaRiitta Norri, Director of the Museum of Finnish architecture.
    http://virtual.finland.fi/finfo/english/arkkitehtuuri.html
Written for Virtual Finland by Marja-Riitta Norri,
Director, Architect; Museum of Finnish Architecture Arkkitehtityöhuone Artto Palo Rossi Tikka Oy/Hannu Tikka, KimmoLintula: Sibelius Hall, Congress and Concert Centre, Lahti, 2000 T he World Architecture Award for 2001 was awarded at midsummer to the Finnish Embassy in Berlin. For the designers of the building, Rauno Lehtinen, Pekka Mäki and Toni Peltola, it was their first built work and only one of them had managed to complete his architecture degree by the time the building was finished. The commission had been given to them through a competition, the traditional way for young architects to get started in Finland. Such competitions have given architecture greater vigour and often elicited an international response, as well.
    Lehtinen-Mäki-Peltola:
    Finnish Embassy, Berlin, 1999.
T he competition system is an extremely effective institution that is an integral part of the practice of architecture in Finland. However, the special characteristics of Finnish architecture are not solely practical, but associated fundamentally with form, content and, specifically background factors. Does Finnish architecture have a distinct identity of its own? The question is often approached in the negative sense, by ruling out the things that are alien to the concept. The alternative approach is to identify the overall frame of reference for the 'Finnishness' of the architecture. "In architecture the key factor is the pursuit of order: Finnish architecture is about the organization of Finland," wrote Pekka Suhonen in the 1960s. "Finnish architecture is what is done by Finnish architects," pointed out Kristian Gullichsen in the 1980s.
