The practice of medicine has seen an accelerated incorporation of technical innovations. Biomedical Engineering has emerged as a medium combining medicine and engineering to provide materials, tools and techniques advancing health care research, diagnosis and treatment. Under the auspices of the College of Engineering's Interdisciplinary degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering, highly motivated students who wish to focus their engineering careers on assisting in the struggle against illness and disease may concentrate their efforts in Biomedical Engineering.
Mission The Biomedical Engineering faculty strive to provide our students the highest quality education and preparation for post-baccalaureate endeavors. We expect and value excellence in teaching, conducting research, and training students to participate in research activities and professional practice. We accomplish our Mission and that of the College of Engineering by providing high quality professional engineering education, at the undergraduate level, continually updated, and consistent with the trends active within the engineering profession to full-time and part-time students. This education is directed primarily toward preparing engineers for research and industrial careers along with graduate studies, while developing the academic base necessary for professional engineering registration.

Biomedical Engineering Center (College of Engineering) is an interdepartmental research center that combines the talents of researchers in engineering and medical disciplines to work toward common research goals and educational activities in biomedical engineering. Faculty associated with the center come from the Biomedical Engineering . Some research topics that faculty in the center are involved in include biomedical sensors, patient monitoring and medical electronics, microcomputer-based medical instrumentation, biomechanics, etiology, prevention, and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, and rehabilitation engineering.
  • Promotes engineering research in minimally invasive biomedical technology that results in reduced risk and morbidity, lowered healthcare costs, faster recovery, less time lost from work and activities, and improved quality of life.
  • Advances four major objectives: (1) diagnosis of diseases and disorders with minimal harm to healthy tissues, (2) diagnosis of diseases and disorders with minimal exposure to toxic agents, (3) treatment of illness by targeting therapies directly to the affected site without acting on unaffected sites, and (4) monitoring physiology and health with minimum affect on the body.
  • Develops biosensors, biomedical instruments, patient monitoring equipment, and microcomputer-based medical instruments.

Biomedical engineering combines engineering principles and methodology with physical, chemical, and mathematical sciences to solve problems in biology, medicine, behavior, and health. Biomedical engineers are employed by pharmaceutical industries, government agencies, biomedical product companies, universities, medical center labs, and emerging high-tech industries. Due to their multidisciplinary backgrounds, biomedical engineers have diverse research interests, often acting as liaisons between technological and clinical communities. For further information, check out the The Whitaker Foundation: Biomedical Engineering @ A Glance.
The Biomedical Engineering Center is home to students from around the world. Of nearly 50 graduate students, about 30% are international, 25% are women, and 20% are members of underrepresented groups. Since 1998, 30% of our graduate students and 36% of PhD students have been female, on average. Similarly, total enrollment in graduate classes since 1998 holds an average of 17% underrepresented ethnic minority students (African-American, Hispanic, Pan-Asian) overall, with 23% of our PhD students belonging to these groups. The Center's small but diverse community of students is a source of comfort within the vast Ohio State University campus.

AIMS AND SCOPE
Biomedical engineering has been characterized as the application of concepts drawn from engineering, computing, communications, mathematics, and the physical sciences to scientific and applied problems in the field of medicine and biology. Concepts and methodologies in biomedical engineering extend throughout the medical and biological sciences. This Journal attempts to critically review a wide range of research and applied activities in the field. More often than not, topics chosen for inclusion are concerned with research and practice issues of current interest. Experts writing each review bring together current knowledge and historical information that has led to the current state of the art. Each issue contains one or more critical reviews of specified topics, representing applied, clinical and basic science areas. Most articles contain in-depth appraisals of the current state-of-the-art in a specific area of research or practice and provide complete and up-to-date bibliographies. Each review attempts to be nearly exhaustive in a constrained area rather than broad and overarching. The critical evaluations of current research and development issues include interpretive discussions of major problems. From time to time, a series of articles in a related topic area are published in order to give comprehensive coverage. Collaborative works generated by multiple authors are frequently used to provide in-depth coverage from multiple viewpoints. Each article is reviewed by one or more independent experts in the field.
