The JCU Contribution to the QPSF Education Program
James Cook University (JCU) is participating in the Queensland Parallel Supercomputing Foundation's (QPSF) Education Program. The QPSF Education Program represents the Queensland component of the Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing's (APAC) Education Program. JCU's contribution is postgraduate courseware in computational science and engineering. The courseware shall be developed in modular form and implemented for distance learning in the web environment. It is anticipated that the modules will form the equivalent coursework component of a Masters in Computational Science and Engineering. The JCU Education Program commenced in August 2001 and shall continue until July 2004. During this period, this site will be continually updated to reflect the program's progress. Visit the Puppy in Spain! Modern engineering practice is increasingly dependent on computers to model, simulate and visualise key elements of the industrial process. Thus "computational engineering" can be thought of as supplementing (or even replacing) the traditional experimental phases of product design and development, data collection, risk-benefit analysis and so on. This course will adopt a "computational-experimental" approach to introduce state-of-the art engineering software packages in a modern workstation environment. The projects will be designed to illustrate the basic mathematical techniques, and engineering principles, "under the hood" of the computer models. Basic programming and unix skills will be assumed. Any feedback about the course may be given by email , and is much appreciated.

Some copies have been ordered into the Coop Bookshop. There are two on 2-hr reserve in the Handcock library.

March 10, 2003 The Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) was made possible by a $38 million investment, $15 million from an anonymous donor, $8 million from industrial partners and $15 million in university matching funds, said Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of The University of Texas at Austin. The industrial partners are Dell Computer Corporation; Cray, Incorporated; IBM; Force10 Networks; Microsoft; Nortel; Platform Computing; StorageTek Computing; Sun; TeraBurst; Myricom, Inc.; and United Devices. The initiative includes the creation of new endowed chairs in key areas of computational science and technology, including distributed and grid computing, computational biology or biomedical science and engineering, and computational mechanics and materials.

Computational Engineering
Computers - as it happens also engineering products - have established themselves as important tools for engineers in recent years and have replaced the pocket calculators and set squares. The complex, interdisciplinary challenges which engineers will face in the 21st century cannot be solved without computer simulations.
Master of Science
The University of Hannover offers a Master Programme in “Computational Engineering” since Winter Semester 2001/02. This programme combines at a high score level the foundations of computational methods in engineering. Courses are given in the fields: Applied Mathematics Advanced Mechanics Applied Informatics Engineering Applications Engineering applications can be chosen from courses in civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering.

Further Information
Successful candidates should have at least a BSc in an engineering discipline, but the studies are open for applied mathematicians or physicians too. Computational Engineering Science This new interdisciplinary program recognizes the growing importance of computation as a methodology for attacking complex scientific and engineering problems. Combined with mathematical modeling and experimental observations, scientific computation enables engineers and scientists to solve problems that are otherwise intractable. The Computational Engineering Science Program provides a solid foundation in mathematics, the sciences and engineering, and fosters skills required for modeling, simulating, and solving complex problems. The emphasis is on the computation of science rather than the science of computation (i.e., computer science). Students have the opportunity to select courses from a wide variety of disciplinary areas (see the section clusters in the detailed description program in Appendix I). The program provides a sound basis for graduate studies in engineering and the applied sciences. Additionally, it nurtures skills that are needed in large-scale technological modeling and simulation such as occurs in industrial and national laboratories.

Graduate students pursuing graduate study toward a master's or Ph.D. degree in one of the participating science or engineering departments may elect this program in place of the traditional minor.     AIMS AND SCOPE
    The aim of the journal is to advance the research and practice in diverse areas of Multiscale Computational Engineering. The journal will publish original papers and educational articles of general value to the field that will bridge the gap between modeling, simulation and design of products based on multiscale principles aimed at reducing prototyping costs and time to market. The scope of the journal includes papers concerned with bridging of physical scales, ranging from the atomic level to full scale products and problems involving multiple physical processes interacting at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The emerging areas of computational nanotechnology and computational biotechnology are of particular interest to the journal.
