NANOTECHNOLOGY In the final analysis, aging and death have only one cause: for whatever reason, the atoms and molecules in our bodies have moved from their proper positions; and other molecules and atoms have moved into positions where they should not be. The molecular machinery in our bodies maintains our lives by handling molecules at the molecular level. A molecular machine is a large molecule that manipulates other molecules, one at a time. We put random assortments of molecules, in the form of food, into our bodies; but these molecules are useless without the intricate molecular machinery in our bodies that sorts through the molecules, rearranging them as necessary, and transporting them to their proper places. When we take a supplemental vitamin or hormone or a medicine, all we can do with today's technology is to inject it into our bloodstream or swallow it, and hope that the body's molecular machinery will transport and use the substances properly. During surgery, even the most precise microsurgery, the surgeon's scalpel slices through thousands of cells moving trillions of molecules out of their proper positions. At the cellular level, every surgical procedure is an unbelievably crude operation. The surgeon relies heavily on the molecular machinery of the body to put things back in position after the surgery is over. If we could develop machines the size of viruses to continuously and efficiently maintain the molecules of our bodies, augmenting the natural molecular machinery in our bodies, we would never get sick. Such maintenance would have to include getting rid of the molecules that aren't supposed to be there.

Nanotechnology is the postulated ability to manufacture objects and structures with atomic precision, literally atom by atom. This would mirror the abilities of living cells (which do exactly the same thing, although based on evolution and not design). This technology will have tremendous potential if it can be developed; simple applications involve the creation of new and powerful materials, perfect diamond in bulk quantities and a tool to manipulate objects on any scale. More advanced applications would involve massively parallel nanocomputers, self-replication and more or less bright nanodevices able to interact with their surroundings. Since there are tremendous amounts of material on nanotechnology and its possibilities, implementation and limitations, I will concentrate mainly on its applications in transhumanism and some technical aspects.

    Abstract
    The death at issue in the brain death debate is not an empiric reality, but a social category, "social death." It is a question of which bodies we are comfortable using and disposing of in certain ways, and not comfortable giving medicine or food as if they were "alive." Until recently both mind and body stopped functioning at the same time, and this "death" and "social death" were generally seen as one phenomenon. There were important exceptions, however, in many cultures where particular diseases and disabilities earned a social death definition before the physical death had occurred.
    Introduction
    For everyday purposes we know and can say whether an animal is alive or not. But upon closer inquiry, we find that this is, in many cases, a very complex question, as the jurists know very well. They have cudgeled their brains in vain to discover a rational limit beyond which the killing of the child in its mother's womb is murder. It is just as impossible to determine absolutely the moment of death, for physiology proves that death is an not instantaneous, momentary phenomenon, but a very protracted process. (Engels,1880

    Introduction
    Molecular nanotechnology is an emerging, interdisciplinary field combining principles of molecular chemistry and physics with the engineering principles of mechanical design, structural analysis, computer science, electrical engineering, and systems engineering. Molecular manufacturing is a method conceived for the processing and rearrangement of atoms to fabricate custom products. It would rely on the use of a large number of molecular electro-mechanical subsystems working in parallel and using commonly available chemicals.     Developed in 2005 by BioDevices Inc., based in Mountain View, California, this chip was the first commercial use of an organic compound for data storage. "Biological sludge" consisting of a crystalline protein was chemically tailored to bond onto access points on a RAM chip. The sludge accreted in 10,000 additional layers, and each layer stored almost as much data as the original chip. The finished product was able to hold 10 Gbytes.
    In 2005, a Dutch-US consortium perfected the application of "bumps" of atoms on an ultrasmooth surface to represent bits of data - creating a revolutionary new storage medium . A massive array of 10,000 tiny, independent mechanical probes scanned the surface, reading data and moving it from one location to another. Each bump of data was about 30 nanometers wide, allowing a single square centimeter to store around 10 Gbytes.
    In 2010, Living Logic Systems of Minneapolis marketed the first cost-effective DNA memory device (a simulation is shown here). Using a technique pioneered 15 years earlier at New York University to force the normally single-stranded DNA molecule to branch into six strands, Living Logic created crystalline DNA : huge arrays of cube-shaped cells, linked like a vast jungle gym. Clusters of copper atoms were attached to each cell in the array, and data was stored by attaching electrons to the clusters. The final result? A chunk of branched DNA about the size of a sugar cube that could store almost 10 petabytes (10 million billion bytes) of information.
