Nancy Leveson received all her degrees, in math, management, and computer science, from UCLA (Ph.D. 1980) and spent her formative years being a Computer Science professor at the University of California, Irvine. Moving to Seattle in 1993 in search of rain, she was Boeing Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington. She has now moved to MIT in her continual search for worse weather and new fields to conquer. Professor Leveson started a new area of research, software safety, which is concerned with the problems of building software for real-time systems where failures can result in loss of life or property. One advantage of this topic is that nobody questions its goals, except for a few misanthropes (who don't matter anyway). She and her students produced a formal requirements specification for TCAS II, a real collision-avoidance system required on all commercial aircraft in U.S. airspace. One of the lessons she has learned from this project is never to do anything like it again. The FAA was pleased with it though and adopted it as their official specification. She claims that you should not read anything into the fact that she has been taking the train a lot lately.

44. Aerospace Software Engineering
A white paper describing the general research goals is available. Softwareand system safety engineering is a particular emphasis of our research.
http://sunnyday.mit.edu/testdir/software.html
Aerospace Software Engineering
"Information technology is becoming a key part of everything the aerospace and defense industry does for a living, and as the century closes, it is computers and software that hold the keys to the future ... Companies that exploit information technology most effectively will be the most likely to dominate the aerospace landscape in the 21st century" [Aviation Week, 12/98]. It has been said that modern aircraft are simply computers with wings. The Boeing 777, for example, has more than four millions lines of software and 1,280 embedded processors to control subsystems and aid pilots in flight management. Aerospace software presents some of the greatest challenges in software and system engineering today: such software usually has hard real-time deadlines, is mission and safety-critical, is extremely complex and embedded within another complex system, and interacts with humans in a sophisticated partnership to assure common goals. Our research is directed at these challenges. Many of the techniques we are devising for aerospace systems apply equally to other critical systems such as transportation systems, medical devices, defense systems, automobiles, etc. We are also exploring links to system engineering and human-computer interaction. Current funded software engineering research includes:
  • Model-Based System Engineering
  • Accident Models and Accident Analysis
  • System and Software System Safety
  • Software Requirements Specification and Analysis

FIRE SAFETY ENGINEERING
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Carleton University offers, starting September 2001, a unique opportunity for graduate studies at both Masters and Ph.D. levels in the area of Fire Safety Engineering. This is a growth area with excellent employment opportunities in Canada and the United States. Fire Safety Engineering is a relatively new discipline. The need for qualified fire protection engineers in Canada and around the word has increased exponentially during the last decade, however there are very few Universities that offer comprehensive set of courses focussing in Fire Safety Engineering. To fill this gap Carleton University with support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Forintek Canada Corporation established an Industrial Research Chair on Fire-Safety Engineering within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Chair has a research program that addresses Canada's need for the development of computer models and other tools to predict the fire-safety performance of buildings and the need for highly qualified personnel.
CURRICULUM:
The proposed curriculum comprises the following six core courses that have been selected to cover critical areas of fire safety engineering and to provide the students with the necessary knowledge to effectively function in a performance based code environment.

The Institute of Fire Safety Engineering Research and Technology (FireSERT) combines a multi-disciplined team of scientists and engineers in an unique laboratory facility on the Island of Ireland within the Universities of the UK. A wide range of scientific, engineering and technical skills are focussed on applied, fundamental and user need driven research in the fields of fire safety science and engineering.
Facilities for research and related activities at FireSERT include a 600m2 burn hall, a range of calorimeters including a ten-megawatt facility for full-scale research. Large-scale combination wall and floor furnaces together with intermediate/small scale furnaces facilitate a range of investigations and product development. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) fire modelling suite compliments the experimental facilities thus ensuring that the next generation of CFD models are based on sound scientifically based experimental research. The Mission Of FireSERT Is:
