Overview
The missions of the Software Engineering Laboratory, also called LGL from its French denomination , are teaching and research in software engineering. Our current activities are targeted at system and software development methods and supporting tools. Our work is based on the object-oriented paradigm and covers the complete range of technical software development activities: requirements analysis, software specification, architecture modeling, design, implementation and testing. It is our goal to bridge the gap between the descriptive (or semi-formal) approaches and formal methods, and to extend them for dealing with distributed systems. We try to maintain an index of our web pages, and a list of our members . But perhaps you need contact information , or you want to visit us and you are trying to locate us . Introduction
FASE (pronounced like "phase"), the Forum for Advancing Software engineering Education, was started in 1991 by members of the software engineering education community in order to have a electronic forum for the dissemination and discussion of events related to software engineering education. The original acronym for FASE was Forum for Academic Software Engineering, but was subsequently changed so that it was more inclusive to industrial and government training issues (which led to a co-editor in that area). In recent years, FASE has also covered a wide variety of professional issues (e.g. licensing, certification, ethics, body of knowledge, and accreditation), which has also led to the addition of yet another co-editor for this area. FASE is an independently-published newsletter, not affiliated with ACM, IEEE-CS or any other organization. So far, 149 issues have been published. Since August 1997, FASE has been published monthly, and is released on the 15th of each month. As of September 2002, FASE has 887 subscribers in over 50 countries.

    5th edition
Welcome to the 1998 version of the web pages associated with my software engineering textbook. These give access to supplements associated with the book, information about my current interests and a list of other web sites which cover software engineering topics Many people visiting this page will probably be most interested in downloading copies of the Instructor's Manual for my book and the OHP transparencies which go with each chapter. To get these, go directly to the supplements page . Links to versions of the slides in Spanish are now available from the supplements page. If you've arrived here from another direction, you may be interested in having a look at what's in the book. You can read the Preface and browse the Contents. If you would like more information about the book's availability, you should contact Addison Wesley (this is the Science and Engineering page) and you can order the book from their on-line bookstore Since writing the 5th edition, the development of the Unified Modeling Language and Java has had a major impact on object-oriented development. I have now updated Chapter 14 of the book to take these developments into account. You can now download a revised version of Object-Oriented Design with all diagrams in UML format and example code in Java.

(Enter summary) Abstract: Agent-oriented techniques represent an exciting new means of analysing, designing and building complex software systems. They have the potential to significantly improve current practice in software engineering and to extend the range of applications that can feasibly be tackled. Yet, to date, there have been few serious attempts to cast agent systems as a software engineering paradigm. This paper seeks to rectify this omission. Specifically, it will be argued that: (i) the conceptual apparatus ... Software Engineering for Internet Applications (6.171)
part of Teaching by Philip Greenspun This is a course for students who already have some programming and software engineering experience, e.g., at MIT the prerequisite is 6.170, Laboratory in Software Engineering. In 6.171 we try to give students some experience in dealing with those challenges that are unique to Internet applications:
    • concurrency 1000 people might be using the system at the same time
    • unpredictable load 100,000 users might show up tomorrow even if only 100 are using the system today
    • security risks an Internet application is forced to expose itself to attacks
    • opportunity for wide-area distributed computing, i.e., using "Web services" provided by other machines on the Internet
    • creating a reliable and stateful user experience on top of unreliable connections and stateless protocols
    • extreme requirements and absurd development schedules
    • requirements that change mid-way through a project, sometimes because of experience gained from testing with users
    • user demands for a multi-modal interface: Web, mobile (WAP), and voice
