Coronal Holes on the Sun
SOHO EIT Consortium ESA NASA Explanation: The ominous, dark shapes haunting the left side of the Sun are coronal holes low density regions extending above the surface where the solar magnetic field opens freely into interplanetary space . Studied extensively from space since the 1960s in ultraviolet and x-ray light , coronal holes are known to be the source of the high-speed solar wind , atoms and electrons which flow outward along the open magnetic field lines. During periods of low activity, coronal holes typically cover regions just above the Sun's poles. These coronal holes , however, have just moved into view near the Sun's equator, and particles escaping them have already caused notable aurora here on Earth. Coronal holes like this one may last for a few solar rotations before the magnetic fields shift and change configurations. Shown in false-color, this picture of the Sun on March 9 was made in extreme ultraviolet light by the EIT instrument on board the space-based SOHO observatory.

    88. The Unofficial, Unexpurgated, Unassuming Complete History Of Sierra's Space Ques
    Retrospective by Adam Rodman.

Articles Eye on Adventure Interviews ... Contests The Unofficial, Unexpurgurated, Unassuming Complete History of Sierra's Space Quest By Adam Rodman Back in 1985, Sierra On-Line was a small company based in Seattle that developed adventure games. After the surprising success of Roberta Williams' game, King's Quest, two of the Sierra members that had worked on it approached CEO Ken Williams with a proposition: could they make a humorous science-fiction adventure game based on the trials of an intergalactic janitor? Their names: Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe, a programmer and an artist, respectively. Ken was, to say the least, skeptical. So the two valiant programmers put together a demo, which would later become the first four levels of Space Quest 1: The Sarien Encounter. Scott programmed, Mark did the art, and Ken Williams absolutely loved the demo. In the mid-1980s, point-and-click games weren't even considered a possibility by developers. Graphic adventure games were little more than souped-up versions of text-only games. Space Quest was programmed in the Sierra Adventure Game Interpreter (which the technical freaks called AGI for short). The character was moved around by the arrow keys, and everything else in the game was controlled by use of a text parser. It would set quite a few records in the gaming industry, including the first adventure game to include a live-action puzzle (the acid drops on Kerona) and the first adventure game to include an arcade sequence (the skimmer on Kerona).

    UPDATE: 4/28/02
Here we go again. Yet another christian has decided to pervert the concept of Lost in Space by duct taping it to christianity.
You can see the page by clicking here.
To Alex, I apologize. Your web page is, in comparison, a bastion of intelligence and subtlety.
Oh, isn't that lovely. The guy is using the Lost in Space robot, an icon of science fiction, to promote the anti science messages of creationism and christianity.
The premise of the robot's anti science rant is as follows: just like a robot cannot arise from nature, but rather needs a designer, so too life needs a designer, therefore goddidit. Sigh. Warming up the old, dead "a watch needs a watchmaker" argument does not make it any more valid than when it was refuted about, oh, a couple of centuries ago. Frankly, what this person is doing is disgusting. It is about on the level of taking the Lost in Space robot and using it as a prop in a photo shoot for Hustler. I admit I do not have much sympathy for license holders and their greedhead attitudes but at the same time I can see their point int this instance. Let's hope the license holders for Lost in Space put him out of business immediately. Gadzooks greedheads might actually do something good for a change, in spite of themselves. These are strange times we live in.

It is obvious this game was designed to try and appeal to a larger audience then just the space sim crowd, whether that is a beneficial trait or not will remain to be seen. The controls and gameplay style might alienate some space sim fans who prefer the action to be easy/fast access and their control/flight options varied. The major

LOOKING UP July 24: Station Sightings Thanks to a new NASA web site, stargazers can track the progress of the growing International Space Station from their own backyards. Because it reflects sunlight down to Earth, the ISS often looks like a slow-moving star as it crosses the sky. It can even appear as bright as the star Sirius if you know when and where to look. GLOBAL WARMING July 21: Contrary Thermometers Scientists are working to understand why the lower atmosphere isn't heating up as fast as some global warming models predict. The atmosphere appears to be more complex than computer simulations that researchers use to understand our planet's climate.
