The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is an examination required by most medical schools (along with academic records, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities and an interview) which is used to evaluate medical school applicants. When is the MCAT given? The test is offered twice a year, once in April and once in August. ~PageLink: Current dates. When should I take the MCAT? The Association of American Medical Colleges recommends that you take the exam 18 months before you plan to enter medical school. For most students this will be the spring of their junior year. Class is out and you have to reach for those well-thumbed text books yet again to revise for the upcoming exams! Or do you? A better and well-proven alternative to conventional texts could be AudioLearn’s comprehensive revision materials, prerecorded on tape cassette or in CD format. Specializing in the college admissions exams of all the major colleges of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and optometry, AudioLearn’s Dr Sharad Yazdani has put together all you need to know for academic success in the exams and the gateway to your professional career. Why AudioLearn? Each audio “book” covers an entire syllabus, which is not only presented in an informative way, but is as easy to listen to whether at home, traveling to work or driving in the car.  The list of publications is shown on the left-hand side of this page.  Just click on the subjects of your choice to learn more about individual topics and to place your order on-line. Audio books are not a novelty or gimmick, but can provide a genuinely better way to learn the immense range of facts, formulas and theories demanded in preparation for so many exams.  Striking just the right balance between the rigorous demands of serious academic learning and the informality of a conversation with your best-loved teacher, the series takes full advantage of the established and well-proven methodologies of learning through listening.  It’s a powerful and recognized method best suited to memorizing massive amounts of information - probably most widely exploited in the teaching of languages and universally employed by all the major language schools.

If you've read my bio , you may be aware that my background is more medical than chemical ;-) My Ph.D. is in biomedical sciences and I spent five years as a college biology professor and the coordinator of the school's premed program. Part of my job was helping students to plan their coursework and college experience to best prepare them for admission to medical school. This also included preparing them for the MCAT, helping them complete secondary applications, and offering advice on interviewing. I also taught Kaplan biology and physics at the medical school to which I was accepted. So, I not only had a job preparing students to enter medical school, but I've been through the process myself. I hope this article will be helpful to readers interested in attending medical school (or one of the other professional schools which require the MCAT). I won't pretend to be objective - my opinions and advice are here in all their glory.

" A great memory is never made synonymous with wisdom, any more than a dictionary would be called a treatise. "
John Henry Cardinal Newman You thought the SAT was the last you'd see of standardized tests? Hah! Think again. The MCAT is required by almost every U.S. medical school. (Johns Hopkins is a notable exception that comes to mind.) You've got to get used to these standardized tests. You'll be taking them for the rest of your career. Which isn't that reassuring, given the recent MCAT snafu for which many students had to retake the mcat at the next regular administration...
The exam can be a frightening experience. You'll have this odd sort of vague sense of feeling like you're in jail. The proctor speaks at you in harsh tones, your identification is repeatedly checked, and you are actually fingerprinted. Try to keep calm in the face of this. Take lots of slow, deep breaths if you're feeling too tense. Say a prayer if you're religious. If you have an understanding significant other, ask them to walk you to the exam. (Not recommended for rocky relationships!)
If you can be prepared enough to take the exam in the Fall before your year of application, you might want to do this. If you're in school, it's much easier to study over a summer than during your spring classes. If you aren't prepared to take it then (I wasn't), take it in the following Spring. Definitely

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE To Medical School Applicants From the desk of Dr. Brett L. Ferdinand Fall 2002 Congratulations on your interest in applying to medical school. I remember when I was faced with the same career choice. Attending medical school was one of the most rewarding decisions of my life. As the senior surgical resident at one of Canada's leading programs for General and Trauma Surgery. I am fulfilling one of my life long dreams and career goals. Medicine is my first passion in life. My second passion in life is teaching. In 1987 I created the first Canadian Medical School Preparatory Course. I first offered the program in the summer of that year. My enthusiasm to help pre-med students became so great that in 1993 I wrote the first edition of my "Gold Standard For Medical School Admissions" which, in addition to being a comprehensive MCAT guide, covers all aspects of getting into medical school. I revised the "Gold Standard" in 1995 by adding three full length MCAT exams. Thousands of students across Canada and the United States have used the "Gold Standard". Teaching pre-med students in my Medical School Preparatory Course (MSPC™) and reaching thousands more through the "Gold Standard For Medical School Admissions" has sustained my second passion in life. I encourage you to read all of this information. You will find information that you will want at your fingertips during the medical school application process.

  • What material is on the MCAT?
  • When should I start studying for the MCAT? ...
  • Can I decide not to release my MCAT scores and then later decide to release them after I have seen my score?
    1) What is the MCAT? Index The Medical College Admissions Test, or MCAT, is the standardized admissions test required by nearly all U.S. medical schools (some combined BS/MD programs that accept students directly from high school do not require the MCAT). The test consists of four sections: Verbal Reasoning (scored 1-15), Physical Sciences (scored 1-15), Biological Sciences (scored 1-15), and an essay section (scored J-T, with T being the highest). The test takes one long Saturday to complete and is offered twice a year, usually in mid April and in late August. Official information about the MCAT, including registration information, may be obtained online from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). 2) How important is the MCAT in the admission process? Index The MCAT is very important. A high MCAT score by itself will not get you into medical school, but a low MCAT score may keep you out. Unfortunately, an otherwise qualified applicant may not even be granted an interview if his or her MCAT scores are not high enough. Once an interview is granted, each applicant is evaluated individually in determining acceptance or rejection. In most cases the MCAT still is just as important as other parts of the application in making the final decision.
  • 53. MCAT Test Prep Advice And Tips For Medical School Applicants
mcat Advice. When to Take the mcat Exam. We advise our clients to take the mcat inApril and lighten up on their course load in this semester if at all possible.
    http://www.admissionsconsultants.com/medical/mcat.asp
    MCAT Advice
Our advice for the MCAT covers the following topics:
    Background
The MCAT will be the single most important test that you will take up to this point of your career. Most medical schools have a minimum MCAT score for acceptance. Students are also partially ranked by admissions committees on the basis of this exam score. From the admissions committees' point of view, the MCAT is the only way to objectively compare you to applicants from other schools. It deserves to be treated with at least the same amount of preparation that you would use to prepare for any other test. Far too many students don't bother to prepare for this important exam and they cite various reasons such as lack of time and the perceived impossibility of reviewing 4 one-year science courses: biology, physics, chemistry, and organic chemistry. (Introductory calculus is not tested although some med schools prefer their applicants to have a firm grasp of calculus. Joint MD/PhD applicants in particular should certainly have a thorough understanding of calculus.)
When to Take the MCAT Exam
We advise our clients to take the MCAT in April and lighten up on their course load in this semester if at all possible. The sophomore year summer and winter holiday break also provide some additional time for preparation. Try at all costs to do well on the test the first time you take it. It is much better to answer "one" for the question "Number of MCATs taken" on the AMCAS form. The admissions committees will notice that the first time you took the exam you did horrible and then you did average or better than average the second time.

In addition, you will have to know the basic, fundamental concepts of physics, general chemistry, biology, and organic chemistry. There will be several minor changes to the MCAT beginning in April, 2003.
    • There will be three questions on DNA and genetics added to the Biological Sciences section.
    • One new topic, "Molecular Biology: Eukaryotes," has been added to the Biological Sciences section.
    • The topics, "Oxygen Containing Compounds" and "Hydrocarbons" will be reduced by a total of three questions in the Organic Chemistry section.
    • Questions on Alkenes, Benzene, Phenols and Ethers will no longer be included on the test.
    • The verbal reasoning section will be reduced by five questions, though the time limit will remain the same.

    MEDICAL COLLEGE ADMISSION TEST
    (MCAT)
    The Purpose of the MCAT
The goal of the MCAT is to help admission committees predict which of their applicants will be successful in medical school. In addition, the MCAT can be used to help applicants who are not accepted to medical school determine the academic areas in which they may need further study. The extent to which test results are used in admission decisions varies from one medical school to another. In general, test results are combined with other information, such as undergraduate records, references, and results of personal interviews. Standardized test scores provide a way for admission committees to compare the qualification of applicants from a variety of undergraduate institutions. They also contribute toward making the evaluation of grades and other credentials a fairer process.
    An Overview of the MCAT
The MCAT assesses mastery of basic concepts in biology, chemistry (general and organic), and physics; facility with scientific problem solving and critical thinking; and writing skills. The skills and concepts tested by the MCAT are those identified by physicians and medical educators as prerequisite for the practice of medicine. Medical school faculty hope that testing for these skills on the MCAT will encourage undergraduates with broad educational backgrounds to consider careers in the health professions and will stimulate premedical students to investigate a wide variety of course offerings outside the natural sciences.
