The News - Pakistan
British Prime Minister Tony Blair made a 4-hour stopover in Islamabad on Friday evening for talks with President Pervez Musharraf on the situation arising out of the September 11 attacks on the United States and the role that Pakistan has pledged to play in the American and UK government's planned joint action against Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban regime.
Blair's visit came only a day after his government released a 70-point "evidence document" on Thursday purportedly "proving" Osama Bin Laden's responsibility for the September 11 attacks. But only nine of the 70 points in the document relate to the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon, and even these rely more on loose conjectures and even looser assertions than on hard evidence.
For another, if the "evidence" contained in the document is not sufficient to "provide a prosecutable case against Osama Bin Laden in a court of law," as the British government itself admits, how is it sufficient evidence to justify going to war against him and the Taliban regime?
Be that as it may, the conjectures and assertions contained in the document are unlikely to rally the Arab world to the West's "war against terrorism." In Riyadh, visiting US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld admitted on Thursday that the Saudi government is worried about the "secondary effects" of a "war on terror." Anti-American feeling is reported to be running high in throughout the Arab Middle East, including in the Gulf states and Egypt - Rumsfeld's next destination.

Theorems and Conjectures about the Positive Integers
There are many theorems and conjectures concerning the positive integers that have been discovered over many centuries. The following describes the more commonly known ones. Again, for variety, I will represent most numbers using the Alternate Number System in base ten using A for the digit ten.
*** Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic ***
This is the most basic of all theorems. In its simplest form, the theorem says that every positive integer can be "split" into prime factors in only one way. In other words, the prime factors of any number are unique. For example, 1386 = 2 x 3 x 3 x 7 x 11 5A = 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 The theorem says that these are the only such representation using prime factors.
*** Fermat's Last Theorem ***
This theorem states that a^n + b^n = c^n is solvable in integers a,b,c only when n is 1 or 2. The case with n=2 are commonly known as Pythagorean Triples such as 3^2 + 4^2 = 5^2. Until recently, this theorem was really a conjecture. It had been proven for many cases of n, but not generally for all n to infinity. In 1994, Andrew Wiles proved it.
*** Fermat's Lesser Theorem ***
This theorem says that (b^(p-1) - 1) has p as a factor when b and p are relatively prime, and p is prime. For example, 5^6 - 1 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 7 x 279 and has 7 as a factor However there are cases when p is composite such as b=2 and p = 341 = 11 x 31 In other words, (2^340 - 1) has 341 as a factor. Fermat's Lesser Theorem was generalized by Euler in terms of a totient function to replace the power (p-1).

Conjectures on edge-connectivity
Conjecture (DeVos [DJS]) By the Nash-Williams/Tutte theorem ([NW] or [Tu]) on disjoint spanning trees, the above conjecture is true if G is 2(a+b)-edge-connected. This is the only partial result I know of. Conjecture There exists a fixed integer k so that every k-edge-connected graph G=(V,E) has a subset of edges S with the property that every edge-cut of G has between 1/3 and 2/3 of its edges in S. The values of 1/3 and 2/3 are of no special importance in the above conjecture. Indeed, an affirmative answer to the above problem with 1/3 and 2/3 replaced by 1/t and 1-1/t for any t>0 would still imply the 2+epsilon flow conjecture Definition: k-courteous < i < k+1 Problem: What is the smallest integer t so that every 3-edge-connected graph has a 2-courteous coloring of size t? It is known (see [DJS]) that 3 < t < 10. It would be quite interesting if the truth were in fact t=4. An improvement on the current upper bound would have some consequences for certain flow problems and cycle-cover problems. < H(2k+1,2k)
