The ancient Greeks were very interested in scientific thought. They were not satisfied with just knowing the facts; they wanted to know the why and how. It should be no surprise that the Greeks were extremely successful in the area of mathematics. The mathematics we use today, and its content, are for the most part Greek. The Greeks laid down the first principles, and invented methods for solving problems. Though most people don't realize it, mathematics is a Greek science - regardless of what modern day analysis might bring. When people look back on Greek genius, they may naturally call to mind masterpieces in Greek literature and art . But the Greeks, with their insatiable desire to know the true meaning of everything and give a rational explanation of it, were irresistibly drawn to the sciences, exact reasoning in general, and logic. There are many famous Greek names in mathematics. One of which is Aristotle , who said he could conceive of nothing more beautiful than the objects of mathematics. Plato , delighted in geometry and the wonders of numbers, inscribed, "let no one destitute of geometry enter my doors" over the entrance to his academy.

The following sites, among numerous others, provide a timeline and overview of the history of ancient Greece

The time period for the rise of Ancient Greek mathematics that we are considering begins approximately in the 6th century B.C., flourishing in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C., and peaking in the third century B.C. The earliest two mathematicians of record were Thales of Miletus, approximately 625 547 B.C., and Pythagoras of Samos, 580 500 B.C. The Greeks' location on the Aegean and Mediterranean seas allowed them to become great travelers. Colonization during the period from the 11th century forward, allowed a network of Greek cities exist along the cost of the Mediterranean, in islands off of Asia Minor and, later, lower Italy and Sicily. By 800 B.C., there was a "Greater Greece" that had a unity of language and culture in the ancient Mediterranean area. The "Greek Miracle" a rapid advancement in culture and learning that took place was due to the colonization from the eighth to 6th century B.C. This colonization allowed not only the culture of the Greeks to flow out, but also allowed the older Egyptian and Babylonian culture and knowledge to influence the Greeks. Most important early Greek mathematical knowledge came from these outposts in Asia Minor, Southern Italy and Africa. One of the most important developments, the Greek alphabet, was developed by borrowing and adapting the Phoenician alphabet.

It should be noted that this is one of a two volume set. This author also compiled and commented upon The Elements of Euclid in three volumes [also available here]. These works were first brought to my attention by my Greek language professor nearly 40 years ago as the best English language source on Greek Mathematics. Just as the Greeks did not view pure mathematics or geometry as a lifes-work so to younger readers [through collage] the methods of logic may prove most useful.

Have you ever wondered who was responsible for making those complicated theorems that we use in geometry and algebra? What about the fact that certain intersecting lines are called rectangles or triangles? Where did all of these interesting ideas come from?
Most of these ideas came from the great minds of mathematicians from ancient Greece. If it wasn't for these Mathematicians, we would have a harder time solving mathematical problems. For example, modern architects would have a harder time calculating distances as they would not know that the sum of the squares of two sides of a right triangle equals the square of its hypotenuse (Pythagorean Theorem). These ideas have formed the basis for the advancement of science in western civilization.
The mathematics and astronomy of the Greeks had been known in medieval western Europe only through often imperfect translations, some of them made from Arabic intermediary texts rather than the Greek originals. For over a thousand years (from the fifth century B.C. to the fifth century A.D.) Greek mathematicians maintained a splendid tradition of work in the exact sciences: mathematics, astronomy, and related fields. Though the early synthesis of Euclid and some of the supremely brilliant works of Archimedes were known in the medieval west, this tradition really survived elsewhere. In Byzantium, the capital of the Greek-speaking Eastern empire, the original Greek texts were copied and preserved. In the Islamic world, in locales that ranged from Spain to Persia, the texts were studied in Arabic translations and fundamental new work was done.

It can be read on three levels: as a description of the practices of Greek mathematics; as a theory of the emergence of the deductive method; and as a case-study for a general view on the history of science. The starting point for the enquiry is geometry and the lettered diagram. Reviel Netz exploits the mathematicians' practices in the construction and lettering of their diagrams, and the continuing interaction between text and diagram in their proofs, to illuminate the underlying cognitive processes. A close examination of the mathematical use of language follows, especially mathematicians' use of repeated formulae. Two crucial chapters set out to show how mathematical proofs are structured and explain why Greek mathematical practice manages to be so satisfactory. A final chapter looks into the broader historical setting of Greek mathematical practice. Winner of the Runciman Award 2000.
