You're confusing the basis for learning with the basis for formalising.
One learns by experience that 1+2=2+1, 1+3=3+1 etc, but using blocks to prove that 111111111111111111111111111 + 111111111111111111111111111 gets tedious.     Portions of this entry contributed by Matthew Szudzik Given any straight line and a point not on it, there "exists one and only one straight line which passes" through that point and never intersects the first line, no matter how far they are extended. This statement is equivalent to the fifth of Euclid's postulates , which Euclid himself avoided using until proposition 29 in the Elements . For centuries, many mathematicians believed that this statement was not a true postulate, but rather a theorem which could be derived from the first four of Euclid's postulates . (That part of geometry which could be derived using only postulates 1-4 came to be known as absolute geometry Over the years, many purported proofs of the parallel postulate were published. However, none were correct, including the 28 "proofs" G. S. Klügel analyzed in his dissertation of 1763 (Hofstadter 1989). The main motivation for all of this effort was that Euclid's parallel postulate did not seem as "intuitive" as the other axioms, but it was needed to prove important results. John Wallis proposed a new axiom that implied the parallel postulate and was also intuitively appealing. His "axiom" states that any triangle can be made bigger or smaller without distorting its proportions or angles (Greenberg 1994, pp. 152-153). However, Wallis's axiom never caught on. In 1823

    • There is a misprint in Q8(a) and its solution . These have now been fixed. (June 11) Vrej will have a review session on Monday 1-3 pm in MS 3974. Vrej will be in for most of Monday morning, and I will be in my office for most of Sunday afternoon (and possibly Saturday afternoon as well). (June 8) Solutions to the sample final are now available . (June 4). The final will cover all of Chapter 2 (except the stuff on the Axiom of Choice) and will have one question on the material in Chapter 3, Sections 2-3. It will not be as difficult as the sample final, but will have the same format. (June 4)

    It is stated elsewhere on this site that hylics and stoichionomy, as well as the entelic system design discipline derived from them, make use of mathematical machinery which has been specially tailored to the purpose of describing those aspects of reality most relevant to the level of analysis the description of ordinary experience at which hylics and entelics typically proceed. The best current exemplification of such mathematics is found in the entelics system language ESL , which is discussed on the Entelics Web site. At present, the only full description of ESL is to be found in the Entelics Research reports [Dwyer 96], [Dwyer 98a], and [Dwyer 98b]. For an overview of some of the basic mathematical ideas underlying ESL, the (very) elementary and informal discussion of aspects of its foundations located on the Entelics site can be consulted. For those with some acquaintance with logic and set theory, the next four paragraphs (adapted from that discussion) which unlike most of the text on that page are aimed at readers with some prior mathematical knowledge provide a brief overview of what is encompassed in ESL.

Srivastava Department of Statistics Colorado State University Ft. Collins, Colorado 80523 USA (This article was submitted for the Souvenir Volume at the occasion of the 12th International Gita Conference, to be held at Stanford University, 7-9 August, 1998. A talk based on this article was delivered in the conference on 8 August 1998) ABSTRACT This article gives a glimpse into the nature of the work done by me during the last 33 years in the general field of developing a rational approach to spirituality. The ideas of this mathematically based foundation for spirituality are introduced in a lucid manner through the story of how I happened to come to this field. Although born in a religious family, I developed an atheistic outlook at age 16. Many secularists and others regard atheism as the rational outlook, decrying belief in God, because they say that it is irrational to believe in myths and in things whose existence is not proven.This view ignores the fact that believing that there is no God is also a belief, which is on the same level of myth as its opposite. Thus, I was victimized for a while, until I realised that I could not prove that there is no God. At this point, I changed into an agnostic, and held Science and Service to humanity as the Highest Ideal, believing that God may or may not exist, but God and spirituality are irrelevant to us. As such, I pressed forward in the scientific field. I happened to study some physics and logic, and in particular Goedel's theorem. In layman's terms, Goedel's work indicates that if there is any mathematical system which involves the natural numbers 0, 1, 2,....and so on, then in that system there are questions that cannot be answered yes or no by using the axioms of the system, although there does exist a definite answer to these questions. In order to answer such a question, some more axioms may be introduced. However, now we will arrive at a new system to which Godel's theorem will again be applicable, and now there will be newer questions that cannot be answered.
