12 Open Problems in Industrial Robotics
Although there are countless open problems in robotics, we hope that by defining what we consider to be the 12 most important open problems in RISC robotics , effort can be concentrated in those areas. In the past year, a number of new problems have emerged. Our objective is to identify new theoretical problems with near-term relevance for industrial robotics. We welcome feedback and/or comments to this list. In addition we would like to add pointers to people currently working on particular problems so that open communication is maintained and duplicate work does not occur. Also, pointers to relevant papers should be added. We welcome submissions of work in progress in this location for feedback. For any comments or changes please contact Eric Paulos The current list came out of a workshop held at Adept by Ken Goldberg in December 1994 and as he points out, "The goal is to specify problems as crisply as possible; the list below is just a first cut." In addition, full credit for this exceptional list should go to Ken Goldberg The list below of the 12 open problems is presented in no particular order. The challenge for each problem is is to define optimality and then find an efficient algorithm or prove that no such algorithm exists.

    Some Problems I've Found Interesting
    • Bonin's Projective Bound
      Suppose a simple matroid G of rank r that does not split has no more than q r-1 points in each cocircuit.
      Conjecture
      r - 1)/(q - 1),
      which is the number of points in an r-1-dimensional projective geometry of order q if such exists. Furthermore, the upper bound is attained only by projective geometries. "Splitting" means that G is the union of two disjoint proper flats. This problem was proposed by Joe Bonin.

What the Meeting is About
Process algebra (also known under the names `process calculi' or `process theory') is a successful method for reasoning about concurrent systems that originates from original insights of key figures like Bergstra, Hoare, Klop and Milner. The foundations of process algebra have been studied thoroughly over the last twenty years, and are still leading to large numbers of interesting results and fruitful ideas. In recent years, powerful tool sets for the analysis of concurrent systems, such as Caesar/Aldebaran, muCRL, Concurrency Factory, FDR, FC2Tools and Concurrency Workbench Edinburgh, have been developed on the basis of process algebra. A wide range of advanced protocols and distributed algorithms have been verified using process algebraic methods, and/or analyzed using the aforementioned tool sets. The aim of this workshop will be to highlight the most important open problems in the field of process algebra, and to stimulate international cooperation on their solutions. Special emphasis will also be given to future directions in the study of process algebra, and to new application areas.

There is a At the Dagstuhl Seminar on Generic Programming The current state of this list should not, of course, be considered "complete" in any way. It is being made available on the WWW for the Dagstuhl participants and others to make additions or revisions. It will likely continually grow, but hopefully it can be pruned as projects are completed or open problems are solved! (These can be highlighted or maintained separately as a record of progress.) Suggestions are also sought for improving the level and type of information provided with projects and problems. For example, should there be a rating system to help readers understand the level of difficulty and/or importance attached to a project or problem by its proposer? Originally Alex Stepanov rated the projects on his list according to both difficulty and importance, each on a scale of 1 to 5. Those ratings are currently not included here, but if there is enough interest they could be added, perhaps after translation to an agreed-up scale.

Conjecture B : N(n,k) is monotone in n and k. Specifically, N(n,k) and N(n,k) Conjecture C : For n sufficiently large with respect to k, N(n,2k) = (k!) and N(n,2k+1) = (k+1)(k!)     Generalize Abhyankar's "Going Up" and "Coming Down" for local uniformization to arbitrary finite transcendence degree. Possible applications: To local uniformization and resolution of singularities, in particular, in positive characteristic. Posted by F.-V. Kuhlmann on February 4, 1999 A valued field (K,v) is called spherically complete if every nest of balls has a non-empty intersection. This holds if and only if every Pseudo-Cauchy sequence in K has a pseudo limit in K. By the work of Kaplansky, this in turn holds if and only if the field is maximally valued, i.e., has no proper immediate extensions. Take a polynomial f with coefficients in K. The following is known:
    1) If f is a polynomial in one variable, then the image f(K) is spherically complete, just as a set with the ultrametric induced by the valuation v.
    If f is an additive polynomial in several variables, then under a certain additional condition, f(K) is again spherically complete. Open Problem 2:
    Prove or disprove that f(K) is spherically complete for all additive polynomials in several variables.
