Once we have made those decisions, there is no turning back. No second chance to rethink, to analyzes or to hope that the decisions we made was for the best. While you may think you have all the time in the world, in reality, time has already passed. Last week, I was reading a front page story in the Chicago Sun-Times that caught my attention. The story was about Rachel Barton, a violinist who was awarded a large sum of money ($29.6 million to be exact) from a Cook County jury for injuries she suffered while riding a Metra train in 1995. While I was a little surprise by the amount she received, the biggest detail left unanswered about this accident was why did it happen. I'm sure you know the whole story by now, so ut yourself in her place for a moment. You have four bags, a purse, a food bag, a book bag and a violin case, weighing maybe 70 plus pounds or so. You're in a hurry to get off the train so you head toward the nearest door. The doors open, you get off and you notice that one of your bags is caught on the vertical support bars so you turn around and you: A. Try to unhook the bag before the door closes and the train leaves. B. Say something like "Blah", leave the bag behind and go on your way. Or C, stop readjust the bag on your shoulder while looking back to see what the problem is and hesitate before you make your next move.

Remarks: Julian Altman was a café violinist who is said to have stolen Hubermann this instrument from his dressing room at Carnegie Hall while Hubermann was performing on his Guarneri del Gesú. After his death in a correctional facility in Connecticut his widow gave in court contradictory versions of the theft. Altman, who played on the Gibson for nearly 50 years, was in prision not due to the theft but due to sexual abuse of his wife's grandchild.

RACHEL BARTON - STRINGENDO: STORMING THE CITADEL (60%) Cacophony, 1998 I'd heard of Ms. Barton, a virtuoso violinist from Chicago, several times
so when I saw this disc it piqued my curiosity. Imagine my surprise when I
turned it over and saw a track list consisting of Metallica, Led Zeppelin,
Megadeth, AC/DC, and other hard rock tunes! I had to check it out. Turns
out Barton and two other accomplished classical musicians, violinist Edgar
Gabriel and cellist Brandon Vamos, banged this nearly hour-long album out
in less than 10 hours of studio time. It's cool to hear familiar metal tunes like "Cowboys From Hell", "Symphony Of Destruction", "One", and "Fade To Black"and especially "Paranoid" and the "Thunderstruck/"Back In Black" AC/DC medleydone this way. (The other bands covered here are U2, Rush, Soundgarden, and Nirvana, plus renditions of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and classical pieces by Handel and Paganini. There's no doubt the violin slinging going on here is amazing, but overall the lack of percussion

The American violinist Rachel Barton is widely recognized as one of the most gifted virtuosi of her generation. She has appeared as soloist with many prestigious ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony (for subscription concerts and at Ravinia), the St. Louis Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Montreal Symphony, the Vienna Symphony, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony and the Budapest Symphony, working with such conductors as Semyon Bychkov, Placido Domingo, Neeme Jarvi, Erich Leinsdorf and Zubin Mehta. Last summer Ms. Barton appeared with the Buffalo Philharmonic and made her Salzburg Festival debut, her first performance in that city since she participated in Mozartwoche 2000 at the invitation of Franz Welser-Most. Highlights of her 2001-02 season included debuts with the Atlanta Symphony and the Louisville Symphony and return engagements with the Rochester Philharmonic and the New Zealand Symphony.
A native of Chicago, she began violin studies at age 3, made her professional debut four years later with the Chicago String Ensemble and gave her earliest performances with the Chicago Symphony at ages 10 and 15 for public television. As recitalist she has also appeared at Ravinia and has performed the complete Paganini Caprices and the Bach Sonatas and Partitas in live broadcasts on WFMT Radio. She also makes time in her schedule for chamber music, performing as a guest artist with such groups as the Chicago Baroque Ensemble and the Pacifica String Quartet, and such other collaborators as Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, Jonathan Gilad and Mark O'Connor. Her performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio's "Performance Today" on numerous occasions.
