CONCERT REVIEW
Bell Plays With Nordic Ensemble
Violinist Joshua Bell Replaces Mutter in Celebrity Series Performance
By Andrew Wong Staff writer FleetBoston Celebrity Series: Joshua Bell Symphony Hall November 11, 2001 Four Seasons was cancelled abruptly after a New York concert. The scheduled tour resumed, however, with a gracious save by violinist Joshua Bell. On November 11, Bell and the Trondheim Soloists performed a slightly altered program. Zwei nordische Weisen . This is only fitting, as Trondheim has recorded every piece for strings written by Grieg, including an arrangement of the String Quartet No. 1 Sarek Orawa Sonata No. 3 Ballade . From the grandiose opening to the most complex chordal passages, his supple bow arm and silky tone made this daunting solo sonata seem easy. The second half of the program, Overall, Bell delivered a satisfactory reading of the piece, although at times the odd combination between the American virtuoso and a Nordic string ensemble was blatantly apparent. Bell twisted and turned to direct his fellow musicians, at times almost thrusting his body into the cello section. His stage manner amplified his climactic solos, but also drew attention away from finer details of his playing and obscured his connection with the ensemble. This story was published on Tuesday, November 20, 2001.

Joshua Bell Quotes
About Stradivarius: "Yeah, it's a good brand..."
After Meadowmount: "I thought maybe I'd pursue violin seriously."
About realizing that violin would be his "thing:" "I started to realize the goose bumps I was starting to get from the music. And I started to realize the power that it could have on my own life and on the audience. And I started to realize that this is an incredible field to be in."
About performing: "It's hard to make a perfect performance." "...I eased my way into performing. I love to perform. And there's no substitute for having thousands of people clapping for you! I was kind of a shy kid, but when I was on a stage, performing, I felt very comfortable. I love performing."
About video games and computers: " I was very much into [video games] too, as a kid; I spent many hours when I should have been practicing, at the arcades. In fact, I had my own computer when I was twelve, and I used to program the games myself. You know, you can open up the Apple and program it. I still love computers...I buy a new laptop every 6 months or so. I do love technology and gadgets."
About composing: "I would like to. I write all my own cadenzas for the major violin concertos. I'm itching to compose."

Early in his career Joshua Bell played an unusual guitar shaped violin by Antonio Stardivari, the greatest violin maker in history.   Stradivari did a lot of experimentation with the dimensions of the violin, but he apparently only made one guitar shaped violin with the rounded corners.  The instrument is generally regarded as not having a great sound, which may explain why he only made one.  This violin can be clearly seen in this early publicity photo. Joshua bell sold this instrument and currently plays an Antonio Stradivari violin known as the "Tom Taylor." It was constructed in Cremona, Italy in 1732.

“Where Bell’s special skills enter is where those of lesser violinists leave off. He has the gift of finding and communicating the emotional essence of everything he touches.” (Washington Post)
I had the amazing opportunity to meet this wonderful violinist in February of 1998. Even though my friends and I basically stalked him to his dressing room, he was still extremely courteous and friendly to us. It was intermission, and he had just finished the Barber Violin Concerto. He was tired but still signed our programs and took pictures with us (I'll scan them and post them here later). He also flashed his incredibly expensive Stradivarius for us to gape. Luckily we caught him during intermission, because, by the time the entire concert was over, his dressing room was empty.
Listen to an excerpt of what he played for us; it was awesome. University of Iowa News Release Feb. 7, 2003 Violinist Bell Performs In Hancher Feb. 28 Violin superstar Joshua Bell, described in an Elle magazine article as "the most celebrated American-born violinist of the modern era," will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 28 in Hancher Auditorium on the University of Iowa campus. With the accompaniment of pianist Simon Mulligan, Bell will perform Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata, the Violin Sonata by Janacek, Wieniawski's Variations on an Original Theme, op. 15 and works to be announced from the stage. The program will also feature the Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D minor for unaccompanied violin by J.S. Bach. Following the concert, Bell will autograph programs and recordings in the lobby. A native of Bloomington, Ind, Bell began his career at a child prodigy, making his orchestral debut at the age of 14 with the Philadelphia Orchestra, followed by a Carnegie Hall debut and a major recording contract. Now, only in his 30s, he has an international career of more than two decades, including more than 25 recordings. His versatile and poetic musicality has won several Grammy Awards, and a Newsweek article declared, "Bell has evolved from a technical whiz to a true artist and intellectual whose music feeds both your brain and your heart." His Grammy-winning recording of Bernstein's "West Side Story" Suite was spotlighted by a performance on the 44th Annual Grammy Awards telecast, and was later featured on a PBS "Great Performances" special, which received an Emmy Award nomination. In 2001 Bell received a Grammy for Nicolas Maw's Violin Concerto, which was composed specifically for him.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JOSHUA BELL RETURNS TO OREGON SYMPHONY
IN ALL-FRENCH PROGRAM CONDUCTED BY JAMES DEPREIST
Bell's 2002-03 performance season began with summer appearances at the Aspen, Verbier, Tanglewood, Saratoga and Blossom festivals, as well as the Pacific Music Festival in Japan and the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London. North American performances include a 13-city tour with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under his own direction, concerts with the Orchestra of St. Luke's at Carnegie Hall, and the San Francisco Symphony. European highlights consist of performances at the Musikverein in Vienna with the Tonhalle Orchestra under David Zinman, a Scandinavian tour with the Stockholm Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert, as well as concerts with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Valery Gergiev and the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome. Conductor DePreist opens the concert with Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin" (The Memorial of Couperin), originally scored for piano. Composed during World War I, Ravel dedicated each movement of this work to the memory of a friend killed on the Western Front. Bell's remarkable gifts as an interpreter are contrasted in the haunting and lyrical "Poème" of Ernest Chausson with the dazzling virutosic fireworks of Ravel's "Tzigane". The second half of the concert features Debussy's "Nocturnes," which pays homage to the visual impressions and effects of light and shadow suggested by the title. "Nocturnes" will feature the women of Portland Symphonic Choir. The concert concludes with the perennial audience favorite, Ravel's "Bolero," which Ravel composed originally as a simple exploration of orchestral colors and timbres.
