Elizabeth Garney The Most Powerful People in Their Twenties
Joshua Bell
Violinist Considered by critics to be the preeminent violinist of his generation, Joshua Bell, 28, has been dubbed a "matinee idol" by New York magazine and "romantic and aristocratic" by The New York Times . Teenagers in the audience squeal ecstatically when the tall, handsome musician appears onstage, occasionally in Reeboks and jeans. His 14th album came out last summer. When he's not recording, he's traveling to one of 110 concerts he performs in around the world each year. Bell got his first violin at age 5. By 12, he was spending afternoons in college music classes at the University of Indiana and summers at Meadowmount, the upstate New York camp once attended by Itahak Perlman, Pinchas Zuckerman, and other famous violinists. At 14, Bell made his professional debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and then went on to finish high school in three years while touring and performing around the world. By 19, he had signed an exclusive contract with Decca/London records. After recording 17 albums for Decca, he recently signed an unlimited, exclusive deal with Sony Records. Bell says he came by his drive naturally. "Everything I did [as a child], I did seriously," he says. "In basketball I'd set a goal, like I'd have to hit 30 flee throws in a row, and I would stay out all day or all night until I could do it."

Bell: Produces weird sounds with the hyperviolin
By Alfred Hermida
BBC News Online technology staff The symphony orchestras of the future could be saying goodbye to the traditional wood section in favour of electronic violins, cellos and violas. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US are developing a series of what they call hyperinstruments. The latest is a hyperviolin, which is being road-tested by acclaimed classical violinist Joshua Bell. "Musically, it is pointing to some interesting things," Mr Bell told the BBC programme Go Digital. "The possibilities are limitless." Wireless bow The hyperinstrument project is designed to use technology to give extra power and finesse to virtuoso performers. Are the days of the violin numbered?

Media: Audio CD Usually ships within 24 hours Product Reviews: Gershwin comes to life Joshua Bell really swings in this rendition of Gershwin's work. He makes the violin cry during version of Porgy and Bess, bringing out the emotion of the work. John Williams takes a turn on this CD as both the conductor and pianist and seems to have fun with both roles. Old piano rolls made by George Gershwin are even used to have George accompany Joshua and the London SO. THERE'S BETTER, BEST, AND THEN BELL! A mid 19th century French poet wrote that his heart was wounded by the violin's "long sobs." If that versifier were alive today and heard "Gershwin Fantasy", his heart would surely be wounded but it would also be warmed and made joyous in response to the glorious music of America's premier young violinist, Joshua Bell. The commendatory matching of John Williams, the London Symphony Orchestra, George Gershwin, and Bell on this CD results in one of the most enriching musical experiences in many a day.

Bell of the Ball Inevitably the Albert Hall was filled to capacity for Friday night's early-evening Prom, featuring heartthrob violinist Joshua Bell . At the core of the programme were two works by, or inspired by, Bernstein - his Serenade after Plato's 'Symposium' and Hollywood arranger William H Brohn's adaptation of West Side Story , for violin and orchestra. As a digestive we had Ravel's perennial showstopper, Arcana , linked to the Serenade by its philosophical, cosmic dimension. Arcana Plato's 'Symposium' lies behind Bernstein's Serenade for Violin, Harp Percussion and Orchestra , though according to Bernstein's daughter this rapturous, neo-Romantic work can be enjoyed by those who have never heard of Plato. There are five movements, representing different aspects of love, from the languorous Adagio of Agathon to the furious Presto of Erixymachus, with material from each section, such as the rising and falling minor 3rd motif of Phaedrus, being reused or developed in the succeeding one(s). After Bell's initial entry, which seemed to appear from nowhere, he spun a continuous silken thread of sound above the orchestra, with exceptionally clean double-stopping and intonation, coupled with highly sensitive phrasing throughout. William Brohn's 19-minute West Story Story Suite owes much to the collaboration of Bell, in preparation for the latter's all-Bernstein recording recently released by Sony. He tried it out and tweaked it until it lay well under his fingers, and also wrote the second and longer of the work's two cadenzas. Brohn deconstructed the original score and built up his Suite with a different structure, though using the same motivic glue as Bernstein, namely the first three notes of the 'Ma-ri-a' refrain, with its haunting augmented 4th. The result is an exhilarating work for both soloist and orchestra, who together gave an enthusiastic, glittering and highly energetic performance.

The Arizona Daily Star OK, I'll admit it. Researching this piece on the Eroica Trio, which performs here Wednesday, leaves me puzzled. Were it not for the violin and cello, I might have mistaken the accompanying photo for a sexy fashion advertisement - not publicity material for a critically acclaimed piano trio that's performed in many of the world's concert halls. But this is the '90s. All-female chamber groups aren't all that rare anymore, and this one's not about to downplay what one critic has called its ``glamorous good looks.''

Bell Bottom
Classical music's most overrated glamour-puss.
By Adam Baer
Updated Thursday, November 1, 2001, at 2:21 PM PT
For a man who's been featured in People magazine as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" and in Glamour magazine as one of its six "It Men of the Millennium," Joshua Bell's a pretty decent violinist. But ask his late teacher Josef Gingold—a student of composer-virtuoso Eugene Ysaye, ex-concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra under Maestro George Szell and the greatest American violin teacher of the 20 th century (Ivan Galamian notwithstanding)—his opinion on what makes a great musician, and you can expect magazine covers to be pretty low on his list of priorities. Bell was fed all the proper musical nutrients and now has the gifts—the physical gifts, that is—to nourish the musical community with class and wit. But eight hours a day of ©tudes in the hallowed halls of the Meadowmount School of Music or at Indiana University (Gingold's home) only trains your left-hand fingers, your bow arm, and the tiny muscles of your hands. Taste is either in you or it's not.
