Joshua Bell
Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Joshua Bell received his first violin at age five and became seriously committed to the instrument by age twelve, when he mad the privilege to meet renowned violinist and pedagogue Josef Gingold, who became his beloved teacher and mentor. In 1981, he made his highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Since that time, Mr. Bell has performed with the world's leading symphony orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra of London and the London Symphony. He has had the opportunity to work with such conductors as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, John Eliot Gardiner, James Levine, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Yuri Temirkanov and Franz Welser-Most. Joshua Bell performs over 100 concerts each season worldwide, including concerto appearances, solo recitals and chamber music. He is interested in exploring the work of living composers and recently performed the world premieres of two pieces written for him: a violin concerto by renowned British composer Nicholas Maw, and Air for violin and piano by American composer Aaron Jay Kernis. Mr. Bell is unique among his peers in that he has begun composing his own cadenzas for the major violin concertos. His cadenzas for the Brahms, Beethoven and Mozart concertos have received consistent praise from conductors and critics alike. He also enjoys chamber music collaborations and performs frequently with close friends and colleagues such as Pamela Frank, Steven Isserlis, Olli Mustonen, Jon Kimura Parker and Jean Yves-Thibaudet.

by George Graham
(Sony Classical 60864 As broadcast on WVIA-FM 9/22/99) During the 1970s, following the folk music boom of the previous decade, a number of younger musicians with rock backgrounds were attracted to country and bluegrass. The Byrds made a couple of country-influenced albums. Bob Dylan went to Nashville to record. Perhaps the most famous example of a rocker going bluegrass was Jerry Garcia who, as a side project, played some banjo in a bluegrass band called Old and In the Way. While most of the rockers-turned-pickers played more traditional-style bluegrass, gradually, these younger players, who were listening to all kinds of other styles, began dabbling with combining the instrumentation of bluegrass with some of those untraditional genres. David Grisman, who played with Garcia in Old and In the Way, was one of the pioneers of what would come to be called New Acoustic music in the late 1970s, mixing bluegrass and jazz. Since then, a further generation of players have established themselves bringing breathtaking virtuosity to bluegrass instrumentation, but with musical influences that run far and wide. Among the bright lights are

1999 EVENTS
Holidays with Evgeny Kissin

Evgeny Kissin
A house concert featuring world-renowned pianist Evgeny Kissin in an extraordinary penthouse apartment... who could ask for a better holiday gift Almost 100 people treated themselves to this extraordinary event on December 16, 1999 at a private home in New York City. Patrons enjoyed cocktails and hors d'eouvre early on, followed by a performance of Rachmaninoff's Études-tableaux, Op. 39 and Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14, Balakirev's Islamey, and three encores. A full-scale sit-down dinner and the opportunity to meet the charming, 28-year-old pianist topped-off the evening. As well as being a great artistic success, this concert was also a great financial success, netting over $80,000.
An Evening of Film for Music Fans
Christopher Nupen On November 3, Classical Action invited its Maestros and other generous supporters to an intimate evening of music and film as our way of saying "Thank you" for their continuing commitment. Documentary filmmaker Christopher Nupen premiered a specially edited version of his two new films on the extraordinary pianist Evgeny Kissin, hosted by BMG Classics. By showing aspects of music making that are not generally accessible even to the concert-going public, Mr. Nupen was able to share with our guests a more personal side of Mr. Kissin, who was also in attendance.
Watts and Lang in Philadelphia
André Watts has been at the forefront of Classical Action's fundraising efforts since we first opened our doors. He stepped up to the fundraising plate yet again, this time performing a private house concert on October 17th for our benefit in Philadelphia. Chinese pianist Lang Lang, who stole the show at the Ravinia Festival in 1999 as a last-minute replacement for Mr. Watts, garnered similar acclaim for his performance at a Classical Action house concert on November 7th. Taking place just outside Philadelphia in Reading, PA, Lang's concert also benefited Rainbow Home of Berks County.
