Bowed Electricity News Home Players Makers Equipment ... News February 2001: After, what...two years? I finally have the time and energy to work on the site again. I've added a bunch of new players and makers, and will be over the coming months writing articles on MIDI and the basics of purchasing an electric violin.
November 1999: Digitalrain.net URL is now inactive, with only a redirect to the Lightbubble address. Please change your bookmarks to point to http://www.lightbubble.com/bowed.
May 1999: Life intervened and I had to take a break from the site. Back to work on it now, though: - New design with persistent left navigation bar. - New Players page with all players sortable by name or genre. Plus icons to denote multiple genres.
- New Makers page with several new makers, plus new layout to make it load faster and to link directly to makers web pages (when available). I'm now working on consolidating some of the other areas of the site, redesigning the layout, and adding several new essays on various subjects. And lots of new players to add, too. Adding them as time permits. The move to the lightbubble.com domain should happen shortly as well.

. The poster for the seminar showed an Escher print, and mentioned Bach's music.
It all sounded too good to be true. I had just read Nagel & Newman's thrilling "Gödel's Proof," I admired Escher's art, and as a music major specializing in piano I was deeply drawn to Bach's music. I was particularly interested in canons and fugues compositions in which several interwoven melody lines all expound on a single theme.
Doug was interested in all these things, and having a grand old time weaving them together into a literary work that would become a classic. We found that we shared other passions writing names so they read upside down, carving a block of wood so it casts shadows of three different letters, writing canons and fugues . Soul mate!
A year later I helped Doug teach the next installment of his course. We began by acting out the story of the Musical Offering. In 1747 Bach visited King Frederich the Great of Prussia at his court in Potsdam. The king, an accomplished musician, played a long sinuous theme he had written.
In his time Bach was renowned as an improviser. The king asked Bach to improvise a 3-voice on the royal theme. Bach obliged. Then the king asked for a 6-voice fugue on the same theme. Bach declined he substituted a simpler theme of his own instead but several months later he sent the king a Musical Offering, which included the 3-voice fugue he had improvised, ten canons, a trio sonata, and a 6-voice fugue, all on the royal theme. (Here are a

A ONCE-IN-A-BLUE-MOON SOPRANO FROM MOSCOW
By Paul Hertelendy
artssf.com, the independent observer of San Francisco Bay Area music
Week of Feb. 27-March 6, 2003
Vol. 5, No. 61
Once in a blue moon, you run across a new young voice so radiant, so joyous, so pure, that you reach for the drawerful of superlatives and start scooping them out.
Such was the surprise encounter with unheralded 30-year-old lyric soprano Galina Muradova from Moscow, singing a Monteverdi madrigal. Her voice is angelic, suffused with the freshness of youth and the ectasy of the madrigal "Tempro la cetra"-four centuries old, but as new a discovery as if written yesterday.
Like the string ensemble Moscow Academy of Ancient Music with which she appeared in San Francisco's tiny ODC Theater Feb. 26, she was making her West Coast debut, leaving the enthusiastic audience in her thrall. Though she attended both the Gnessin Music Academy as well as Vienna's Music Hochschule, and has sung at several European festivals, at this stage she doesn't even have a manager. But that should change rapidly, once this run concludes March 2 and the word gets around.
This program billed as the Wired Strings Festival is a very ambitious and high-quality one, linking both the very old and very new. The 10-member Moscow Academy is also playing some contemporary Russian music under another title (Opus-Posth.) and doing it with polish and excitement, under the charged leadership of violinist, recording artist, and Artistic Director Tatiana Grindenko. Sharing the stage is the Paul Dresher Electro-Acoustic Band in cutting-edge crossover music from both the USA and Russia. Dresher, 51, is a long-standing electric guitarist whose ensembles, with amplification and processed sound, have rocked the halls here for nearly 18 years.

by Cheryl Stiles and Kathryn Sargent Sarah Brightman. In her magical new offering, La Luna, to the haunting, pop lovesong from the television show, Roswell, (my personal favorite). Her title song, is a tender and enchanting love song, while is a jazzy reflection on the impermanence of life. She even gives us (of Procol Harum fame), , and a familiar surprise at the end (which I will not ruin for you). Is there nothing this woman cannot sing? The music is La Luna highly enough!
