"The often aggressive sounds of Britten's Violin Concerto had guest soloist Thomas Bowes bobbing and weaving musically and at times physically like a boxer trapped in a corner. His command of the rapidly changing testing passages never wavered, opening up the work clearly for our inspection." Bristol Evening Post 27 April 2002
The Times 4 Dec 2001
The Scotsman 3 Dec 2001 ……the incredible violinist Thomas Bowes….." The Herald 3 Dec 2001 Gerard McBurney on Alberga Violin Concerto performance
"I was very impressed indeed and struck by the sense of drama, the passion of the music and the playing, the way the amazing long orchestral introduction set up the entry of the fiddle most daringly, the moments of tenderness and the way the music gets torn apart in the final section." Strings January 2001 " The playing was superb: brilliant, authoritative, free, passionate, totally committed, and powerfully projected. Bowes' tone is intense, variable and pure; his identification with every style was complete, and indeed, in the Bartók and Ravel he exaggerated the Gypsy idiom, playing with unbridled abandon, incessant slides and extreme rhythmic liberties."

Remember
"Remember is dedicated to the memory of my mother. With slow and simple phrases at the start, the music progresses with metric subdivisions and then settles back to the ideas at the beginning. Although the content, shape and form of the piece exists in its own right, the Jamaican folksong "Come Lisa "weaves like a thread appearing and disappearing throughout the fabric of the composition. The overall character is plaintive, lyrical, gentle yet passionate" Click here for information on how to order works
Biography Jamaican-born Eleanor Alberga is regarded as one of the most exciting and inventive composers on the contemporary music scene. She first started writing for the London Contemporary Dance Theatre and interest in these performances resulted in a wide range of commissions for concert music, encompassing solo works, chamber music, orchestral pieces, and electronic scores. Her music has now been heard at London's South Bank Centre, the Royal Albert Hall, and St John's, Smith Square, as well as in other major venues throughout the UK and abroad. She has had works performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Chamber Symphony, the European Women's Orchestra, Lontano, and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta. Eleanor's musical background is richly diverse, combining rigorous classical training as a pianist and singer on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music with her experience as a member of the internationally acclaimed Jamaican Folk Singers, and three years as a dancer with an authentic African dance company. She is pianist in a duo with her husband, violinist Thomas Bowes.

Musical couple play together Web posted October 24, 1997 A classic night
By Bill Syken
Staff Writer The British piano and violin team performing Thursday for the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society is a duo in every sense of the word. Not only do they play together, they live and love together as husband and wife. They were introduced by a friend, and married, and only then did the musical union form. They've been married five years, and performing together for three. ``It's very good,'' said Eleanor Alberga, the pianist. ``It's broader in so many different senses. If we go on tour, we're with each other. If there's a couple days off it's easy to have a holiday. We're quite frank with each other about what we think of each other's playing.'' The Jamaican-born Ms. Alberga and her husband, British violinist Thomas Bowes, call themselves Double Exposure. At their performance Thursday at the Old Medical College they will perform six violin and piano pieces, including two new pieces. One

Widely acknowledged as one of the UK's leading virtuosi, Thomas Bowes began learning the violin with Lee Ken Kok at the age of 7, but it wasn't until he was 17 and had begun to study with the renowned Hungarian pedagogue Bela Katona, that he realised music had become his true vocation, and his chosen career. Passion and integrity, without extramusical gimmicks, are fundamental to Tom's playing. Leading recent audiences and critics to describe him as "just awesome.". "In everything he played, Bowes revealed an exacting and deeply felt musicianship." After graduating from Trinity College of Music, Thomas became the founder leader of the Maggini String Quartet, then concertmaster of the London Mozart Players, with whom he made his BBC Proms debut under the direction of Jane Glover. This acclaimed leadership resulted in numerous invitations to guest lead some of the UK's greatest orchestras. These include the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, working closely with the late Sir George Solti, Sir Colin Davis, Michael Tilson Thomas, Joseph Swensen and Kent Nagano. As a soloist, concert highlights include a performance of Szymanowski's 2nd Violin Concerto with Takuo Yuasa and the Ulster Orchestra, followed by a specially commissioned recording of this work for the BBC 1998 Proms season. In 1999 Thomas made his debut with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, giving the world premiere of John Metcalf's Violin Concerto "Paradise Haunts..". Last season saw performances of Mozart and Tchaikovsky concertos with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra during its tours of The United States of America and again with them at New York's Town Hall. Early in 2001 he gave 2 performances of the Elgar Violin Concerto in San Francisco and Montana, leaving critics struggling for superlatives and audiences ".in rapt silence" ".. 900 listeners leapt to their feet in (a) show of admiration..."
