Tuesday, June 18, 2002 CSO, violinist speak Italian well

    By Nicole Hamilton, nhamilton@enquirer.com
    The Cincinnati Enquirer
Played well, Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons would sound good anywhere. But hearing the masterpiece al fresco, just as the sun sets in the summer sky, seems the way the composer would have wanted it. Ms. Wilson seemed to leap onto her platform to conduct the concert's opener, Gioacchino Rossini's Overture to The Barber of Seville All evening, the young conductor paid thorough attention to each section, working to bring out the subtle melodies and phrasings while allowing the orchestra members room to let go and play their best.

The concerts in the Anatolian coast will be held in the Kadýköy Peoples Education Center and in Istanbul in the Lutfi Kýrdar Concert Hall.
This season, the Lutfi Kýrdar Hall concerts will start at 20.00h. and the ones in the Kadýköy People’s Education Center at 20.00h .
The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra which launches its 2002-2003 season with many new surprises, will give its first concert on October 29 at the Lutfi Kýrdar Concert Hall and on October 30 at the Kadýköy People’s Education Center. This concert will feature soloist Juliana-James Yaffè; the famed soprano will sing the world première of Arif Mardin’s “I will Wait” work, followed, on the occasion of Nazým Hikmet’s 100th birthday, by the Orchestra’s performance for the first time in Istanbul, of Nedim Otyam’s “Kuvayi Milliye”. On the same concert the Orchestra will also offer Mussorgski/Ravels “Picture at an Exhibition”. Juliana-James Yaffè made her name by her superb singing in Italian, English and German and her rich repertory of opera parts: she proved to be the best soprano in the style of noted Dutch soprano Elly Ameling.

We will be asking you to be ready to make a commitment by Nov. 13, so that we can have the program in effect beginning Dec. 1 and running through May. If you are interested in MTU Works but cannot attend the meeting, there are bus schedules available for you to look at in the Public Relations office (MC 228), and Loretta Waughtal can answer your questions about the program.
    Pre-Law night
All students with an interest in attending law school are invited to Pre-Law Night from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wed. Nov. 11 in the FAC Hospitality Suite.
