The Romanian composer George Enescu (1881-1955) has been a towering figure of 20th century music as a composer, violinist, pianist, conductor and pedagogoue. Together with Bartok (1881-1945), Szymanowsky (1882-1937), Janacek (1854-1928) and Stravinsky (1882-1971) he engineered the rebirth of the East European national schools thus creating the bridge linking the romantic era to the modern and contemporary language of music. Towards the end of the fifth decade of the last century, Enescu was a regular visitor on the campus of the University of Illinois, being in residence for long periods of time. He gave numerous masterclasses of violin, piano and chamber music, performed solo recitals and with orchestra and conducted the Sinfonietta and the School of Music Orchestra. Beginning with 1948 through 1950 Enescu's presence would be an inspiration and a catalyst of music making and learning for students and faculty alike. The present Festival is an attempt to revive those glorious moments in our School of Music's past and tradition and serve as an inspiration for our present and future generation of music students. In addition, this event is connected to the American premiere of George Enescu's Trio for violin, cello and piano which has been revised into a new edition by the eminent Romanian composer and musicologist Pascal Bentoiu. This particular event will take place, in addition to the University of Illinois, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Central College, Iowa.

Bohuslav Martinu is the most important Czech composer after Janacek, though most of his compositions, including his 14 operas, were written while he was away from Czechoslovakia. Bohuslav Martinu 1890 - 1959 Vaclav Klicpera 1792 - 1859 Martinu's works cover a variety of styles, including the one-act jazz opera Les larmes de couteau , three radio operas, and several full serious works. His most well known work is the 1937 radio opera Comedy on a Bridge . Based on the play of the same name by Vaclav Klicpera, the opera has been successfully transfered to the stage. A comedy about the absurdities of war, it remains a favourite for student performance. A previous radio opera, The Voice of the Forest , with words by the Czech poet Vitezslav Nezval, was broadcast by Czech Radio Prague in October 1935. The need to earn money, and the upheavals he experienced in Romania as a result of the two World Wars meant that he was better known as a conductor and violinist during his lifetime. But the enormous expansion of the recorded repertoire on CD means that his stature as Romania's greatest composer can now be more widely appreciated. BEGINNINGS Enescu was born in Moldavia, in north-east Romania. The only surviving child of twelve, he was fiercely protected by his mother, and wasn't allowed to mix with other children. He found an outlet in painting, and then, after he was given a violin at the age of four, in music, which he learned to play by ear. By the time he was five, he'd become proficient enough to impress the director of the Conservatoire in the Moldavian capital of Iasi. Two years later, he'd made sufficient progress to go to the Vienna Conservatoire. PRECOCIOUS CHILDHOOD In Vienna, the seven-year-old Enescu studied violin, piano, chamber music, harmony, counterpoint and musical history, and graduated at the age of twelve with the highest grade in all subjects. Not only an excellent composer, he was also a first-rate violinist and conductor, and an accomplished pianist and cellist with a formidable musical memory. The three works on this excellent CD span almost 30 years of his career, but each one is as fascinating as the other in its own way, and Adelina Oprean and her brother team up brilliantly to meet each of their challenges. Sonata no.2 is a stunning early work, heavily tinged with Brahmsian sonorities and rhythms. Oprean captures the mood of the sinuous opening theme of the first movement and the wistful understatement of the Tranquillo slow movement beautifully, as well as playing the more impassioned sections with great command and feeling, before launching deftly into the spirited dance-like finale.

GEORGE ENESCU (1881-1955) Violin Sonatas Excerpts from the sleeve notes THE ROMANIAN COMPOSER George Enescu (1881-1955) is one of the neglected giants of modern music. His magnificent series of late chamber works, which starts with his Third Violin Sonata, includes pieces of striking originality, intricate beauty and expressive power which can be ranked with the finest chamber music of Ravel, Janácek or Bartók. Outside Romania, however, most of Enescu’s music is unknown, and the only pieces played at all frequently in the concert hall are his two early and far from typical Romanian Rhapsodies. Judging Enescu by those two pieces alone is rather like judging Ravel on the basis of Bolero and nothing else. Enescu was born to a fairly prosperous middle- or lower-middle-class family in the north-eastern corner of Romania, close to the Ukrainian border. He showed a precocious talent for both violin-playing and composition, and at the age of seven he entered the Vienna Conservatoire. There he encountered Brahms, and developed what was to be a life-long devotion to his music. In 1895 Enescu moved to the Paris Conservatoire, where his teachers included Massenet and Fauré, and his friends and fellow-students included Ravel and Alfred Cortot. Even before he left the Conservatoire in 1899, he had attracted public acclaim in Romania as a composer; up until the first world war, he was based mainly in Paris, but spent several months each year in his native land, where he was appointed court musician to the Romanian royal family. Major works of this period included his first symphony (1905); his second and third symphonies were completed in Romania during the war.
