The violinist Ida Haendel will play the third sonatas by Brahms and george enescu, the latter a sentimental tribute to her childhood teacher (and Menuhin's).
The one they don't want you to hear
Establishment attitudes have limited appearances by Ida Haendel, the violinists' violinist - but tomorrow, she plays. Norman Lebrecht reports
Thursday 22 June 2000 WITH its pristine acoustics and sexy ceiling friezes, Wigmore Hall has served London splendidly for almost 100 years as its premier venue for debutants. Most of the 20th century's great performers took their first UK bow beneath its Pre-Raphaelite cupola, along with innumerable hopefuls never to be heard again. A debut at the Wigmore joins Artur Rubinstein to a cornetist from Rotherham and a Reigate contralto, but seldom in its diverse virgin roster has the old oaken hall received so remarkable a first visit as the recital that is billed for tomorrow night. The violinist Ida Haendel will play the third sonatas by Brahms and George Enescu, the latter a sentimental tribute to her childhood teacher (and Menuhin's). Haendel is in her early seventies; her exact age is a matter of musicological confusion. As a child star in London before the Second World War, she sold out the biggest concert halls and never had need of the bijou Wigmore. In mid-life, she migrated to Canada. Now, playing as richly as ever, she is shunned by sexist orchestras that insist on female soloists (only females) being wrinkle-free. It is four years since she last played in Britain. For reasons of fate, fashion, human foible and her femininity, Ida Haendel is being withheld from the public at an age when she has most to offer. A new recording of the Enescu sonata, with Vladimir Ashkenazy accompanying, displays the huge, warm tone for which she was always famed, along with a controlled wildness and calculating wisdom that comes from a life well lived.

George Enescu (or Georges Enesco,1881-1955), the Romanian composer, violinist, conductor and teacher, divided his time between Paris and his native country. He started to play the violin at the age of four and to compose one year later; from 1888 to 1894 he studied at the conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. He then went to Paris, initially to continue his studies at the Conservatoire; he was already a mature performer, however, and was soon associating with leading musicians there, composing and starting to conduct. In 1898 his opus 1, the Poème roumain Oedipe , written between 1921 and 1931 and first performed at the Paris Opera in 1936.

Violinist prodigy to perform
classical music at McCain
he first came to the attention of the world as a child prodigy. A world-class violinist, Midori has been performing concerts for the past 15 years and she's only 25. Midori will perform at 8 p.m. Friday in McCain Auditorium. Midori first began playing when she was 4 years old. Her mother taught violin lessons and was her inspiration. The young Japanese girl began performing concerts when she was 10. Midori made her debut in New York with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra when she was 11 years old. Richard Martin, director of McCain, said an important reason Midori was brought to McCain was because she, unlike many other child prodigies, continues to shine in her field of talent. "She has not lost that sparkle, that magic she had as a youngster," Martin said. Midori will play a variety of classical pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. Midori's program will feature music by Cesar Franck, and violin composers George Enescu and Fritz Kreisler. In a tribute to Schubert, Midori will play "Sonata in A Major." She has appeared on "The Tonight Show," recorded albums and performed at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games. She is also the founder of the Midori Foundation, an organization established in 1992 to bring the performing arts into the everyday life of children.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Carrie Kikel Director of Public Relations OR Karen Pederson Public Relations Coordinator ROMANIAN VIOLINIST SILVIA MARCOVICI TO PERFORM GLAZUNOV CONCERTO; DePREIST TO CONDUCT MOZART’S “JUPITER” SYMPHONY Portland, Ore. ... Romanian violinist Silvia Marcovici, whose recording of Alexander Glazunov’s Violin Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra was called “…the most overtly beautiful account I have encountered” by The Strad’s David Denton, will give a rare performance of that work with the Oregon Symphony, Jan. 8 – 10, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. Music Director and Conductor James DePreist will conduct the program, which also will feature Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony and Tomas Svoboda’s Marimba Concerto, featuring Principal Percussion Niel DePonte. Media support for Classical concerts is provided by The Oregonian.
The Glazunov concerto, despite its lovely musical qualities, has yet to be established as a mainstay of the popular classical repertoire. It has been performed only twice before in the Symphony’s 104-year history – in 1938 and 1983. Svoboda’s Marimba Concerto, commissioned for the Oregon Symphony’s Centennial Celebration in 1995, is “stylistically lyrical and neo-romantic,” according to the composer’s program notes. The work is dedicated to the Symphony’s DePonte and is the first concerto ever commissioned by the Symphony for one of its players. Mozart’s epic Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter,” which includes perhaps the composer’s most stunning display of counterpoint, will round out the program.

Its main purpose is to provide musical training in this country for talented young Romanian musicians and it provides musical scholarships at three music schools in the UK. The orchestra was formed through a series of competitions which are held in Transylvania in July each year. Those students wishing to participate travel to the city of Targu Mures, where they are auditioned to establish their musical capabilities. They are then interviewed in English to ensure that their grasp of the language will make a musical education in England worthwhile. The most gifted sixteen students then formed the George Enescu* Orchestra , which, after intensive rehearsals, came to England to perform at the various schools which provided the scholarships. During its stay in England, the orchestra will be performing in Edinburgh and Yorkshire, at St Paul’s Choir School in London and at Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham. It will also be performing at the Chiddingly Festival this year, under its

He contributed significantly to the development of music in his own country, although much of his activity centred on Paris, where he was a pupil of Marsick and for composition of Faur© and Massenet. "Oramo, the latest to emerge from Finland's seemingly inexhaustible fund of star-quality musicians, nailed down his credentials with a performance of the Mozart 39th, its magical wind scoring lovingly sprinkled with stardust. I also have a warm spot for guest conductors so little ego-driven that they don't bother to remove their eyeglasses before taking a bow: Oramo's modesty in this regard seemed, in a word, spectacular."
LA Weekly, May 28 1999 Oramo has been warmly received by Birmingham audiences and his concerts have been highly acclaimed by the press. In a remarkably short space of time, Sakari and the musicians of the CBSO have built an extraordinarily strong and creative partnership. His programmes reflect his Finnish origins, as well as exploring the English tradition through composers such as Bridge, Britten, Elgar, Sullivan and Vaughan Williams.

The Roumanian Dinu Lipatti is a myth among pianists, a cult figure ringed by the aureole of a reputation. The recording of Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto is one of those of which words like "imperishable" and "unsurpassable" are used, and it is the epitome of supple elegance; some of his Chopin performances exert the spell of "Romantic Schwarmerei" ; his interpretations of Bach are heard with respect but the listeners shake their heads over the perpetuation of 19th-century taste. And they lament Lipatti's Schubertian fate, his early death at only 33. The very sound of Dinu Lipatti's name is a distant, oh so distant sound from a remote age in the history of piano-playing. Where does the key to Lipatti's art lie? Not in the fluency, accuracy and high technical standard, for every aspiring pianist has those today, as a matter of course. In the breadth of his repertory (even if it excludes Beethoven)? It's not uncommon. In the poetry and expressiveness of his attack7 A large number of presentday pianists equal him in that. I never had the good fortune to hear Lipatti in the concert hall; I know him only through his recordings. Yet I will venture the theory that the key to Lipatti's art lies in something that reference books pass over: in the fact that he was a composer and also a conductor, just as his compatriot and godfather George Enescu was a violinist and a composer.

If you think you might have something suitable, feel free to send it in, and we'll do our best to include it. To open Richard Fairclough gives us Thoughts on pianism; on Horszowski; and others There have been published in the music magazines, of late, lists of the “100 best…” One hundred is a very large number of ‘best’ people (who is first; who is last; are there more than a hundred?! or are there fewer!?…) By a quirk of fate, pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski has not managed to scrape in to one such list, of the hundred best pianists! I have entertained a notion for many years that this artist belongs to a select group of eight keyboard players whose qualities as interpreters, whilst embracing all of music’s structure and laws, leave behind Art and take on a dimension that is extra-musical – they become , as it were, a part of Nature… In this rather personal category I have Alfred Cortot , Edwin Fischer, Wanda Landowska (harpsichord), George Enescu ( whose very tiny output of recorded pianism [ to be found on Dante HPC 091/2] shows him to be as haunting and expressive a pianist as he is a violinist), Dinu Lipatti, Rudolf Serkin, Murray Perahia and Mieczyslaw Horszowski.. May I also include here a similar list of string players, Kreisler, Casals, Enescu, Thibaud, Menuhin, Hassid, the Budapest Quartet [ and other ensembles involving Alexander Schneider, such as the New York Quartet … ] ).
