FOUR SEASONS a BBC Wales production April 7, 7:55-8:40pm (repeats 11:30-00:15pm) It's one of the most popular and enduring of all musical works, but oddly, Vivaldi's Four Seasons is very rarely performed in its entirety. Even rarer is a performance in a glasshouse full of flora and fauna. BBC Wales has created a 45 minute special Four Seasons to bring nature and music together and breathe some fresh air into this masterpiece, which remains one of the most accessible pieces of classical music around. The National Botanical Gardens of Wales in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, provide the perfect backdrop for a unique performance of the work by the Academy of St Martin's in the Field and 18-year-old German prodigy violinist Julia Fischer. Recorded over two days, the four concertos each have different lighting conditions, giving each season its own character. BBC Wales built a special concert stage over water for the performance at the Sir Norman Foster-designed great glasshouse, so that the programme could reflect in both sound and vision the budding, growth, energy, full bloom and dying off of the four seasons. To add an extra challenge, with the Gardens remaining open to the public throughout the two days, Vivaldi's piece had to be recorded in early morning and late night shifts, to avoid causing disruption.

(Violinist) Julia Fischer, born in Munich, Germany, in June 1983, has already established herself as one of the foremost young violinists. Critics in Germany have said of her that she is "not a talent, but a full-fledged phenomenal violinist," ( Die Welt ) and that she is "only 15, but stylistically already mature.... She takes your breath away," ( Stuttgarter Nachrichten ). Of her 1999 Concertgebouw recital debut, the music critic for Die Volkskrant wrote, "After Schubert's Sonata in A, op.162, where astonishment about her abilities created musical ecstasy, in Grieg and Brahms she arrived at interpretations that only a few mature violinists could equal." Julia works with such internationally acclaimed conductors as Christoph Eschenbach, Lorin Maazel, Yehudi Menuhin, Bernhard Klee, Asher Fish, Marek Janowski, Johannes Goritzki, Michael Helmrath, Jeffrey Tate, Simone Young, and Justus Frantz and with a variety of leading German, British, Polish, French, Italian and Slovakian orchestras. Tonight's recital presents three representative incarnations of the genre known as the "violin sonata." It may seem self-evident that a violin sonata is what it is; we expect two performers to emerge from the wings and play a composition that is essentially a piece for a violin soloist. However, to think in such a manner is to neglect the history of the form, and overestimate the importance that the violin has had throughout much of classical music history. The violin represents for us today the traditionally pre-eminent solo instrument, but it very nearly lost that status to the piano, and the two instruments now occupy the twin thrones of the musical Royal Court. Devil's Trill Sonata is perhaps his best known work today, occupying a place in many a virtuoso's repertoire. It dates from about 1745, although this is a conjecture based on stylistic details; Tartini is said to have changed his style to a more "graceful and expressive" manner in 1744. His music is a peculiar blend of lyricism, virtuosity, and pathos, leading the way into the Rococo era to come.

Süddeutsche Zeitung – Aktuelle Kritik - 2. Dezember 2002 Neue Welt

The succession of exceptional young violinists continues, seemingly without end.
The child-wonder prodigies like Midori, Hillary Hahn, and Maxim Vengerov have hardly grown up than teenagers like Julia Fischer take up the challenge and make superb music for the new decade.
Fischer, 19, lit up all of Davies Hall with her lustrous interpretation of Sibelius' Violin Concerto March 13 under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. The attractive Bavarian musician with the hour-glass waist launched into the distant pianissimos of the opening with a silky, serene tone. Then she astonished me with a powerful bow arm, particularly in the sinewy finale, reflecting a vigor at the other end of the sonic spectrum. And her intonation, double stops and other technical matters were thoroughly mastered.
She brought the audience to applause after every movement- an amazing response that I had never encountered in this hall, now over two decades in age.
