Generally speaking, the "main" number indicates how many performers are required. The superscript, when present, indicates how many works have been written for this number of performers. In other words, Two Apparently this CD marked Christina Fong's debut on disc; there have been other OgreOgress releases with Fong since then, including more Cage. ( See my review One was written in 1990; One comes from 1992, the year of Cage's death. As is often the case with Cage, he gives the performer latitude, so no two performances of these works are likely to be the same. According to my OgreOgress contact and percussionist Glenn Freeman, "This performance is only one realization. For almost all the number pieces, the notes will always be the same and in the same general order of appearance, no matter who realizes the work. The notes will fall at different times and have different durations, based on chance, but the piece is always the same length of time." I suppose the take-home point is that all One is any number of possibilities. A statue remains unchanged whether you view it from the front, the back, or the side.

In addition to concerts in DeVos Hall, the symphony will be taking several of its performances on the road to Calvin College and to Holland. The first local performance is this weekend when Hope College associate professor of violin Mihai Craioveanu solos with the symphony in its first Casual Classics Series concert, conducted by John Varineau. Craioveanu will perform Beethoven's "Romance No. 2 for Violin and Orchestra" and Henri Vieuxtemp's "Violin Concerto No. 5," during the program scheduled for 8 p.m., Saturday at the Knickerbocker Theater. The two solo pieces are well suited for the concert, according to Craioveanu.

Fong is Associate Concertmaster of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. Although John Cage (1912-1992) composed conventional music, he is best known as an initiator of "chance" composing. Fong says the composer would base his compositions on the roll of a dice. "All of his pieces go back to his beliefs in Zen Buddhism," Fong explains. "He challenged what is music, what is art. And his music is challenging for the performer and the listener." In the February 26 performance, Fong will play the two selections from Cage’s "number music" series that were written for solo violin. "One6 " and "One10 " are 47 minutes and 24 minutes long, respectively. Fong plans to record both works on her first CD release later this year. Fong switches from violin to viola as the pieces dictate and Ashby likewise between piano and harpsichord. The recording is warm, honeyed, close and enveloping - quite distinctive. Do not look for great dramatic incident in this music for these are works of modest contour, daring in their way, full of intrigue rather than climactic oratory and turmoil. Yeraz for unaccompanied violin leads us back through tranquil roads to that elusive place of Bachian repose. The Khirgiz Suite (violin and piano) is in three sections; the first two named and the third not. The Variations (I) approximate to a middle eastern Lark Ascending while the chattering Khirgiz Tala (II) is folksy with that sense of slippery ecstasy to be found in the Great War chamber music of Herbert Howells. The unnamed III is gripping and fast music written for virtuoso treatment ... which is what it gets. This recalls Bart³k in barbarous mode. The three movement 1954 Duet for violin and harpsichord is very short indeed - just over three minutes and just three movements. The style is radically at odds with the other works with dissonance and discontinuity firmly embraced within a baroque casing.
