The Strad Magazine, 1998 Erick Friedman, the renowned American virtuoso violinist, has had a truly outstanding career as a performer. He made his New York debut at the age of fourteen, and at seventeen began studying with Jascha Heifetz, wth whom he recorded Bach's Concerto for Two Violins. Currently a full Professor of Music at Yale University, Mr. Friedman is still an active performer, conductor, and recording artist. Peaks and Pitfalls
Dennis D. Rooney looks at the career of Erick Friedman, past, present, and future. If in 1957 Erick Friedman had taken the advice of his early mentor and first manager, Arthur Judson, and passed up the opportunity to study with Jascha Heifetz, his career might have followed a very different course. 'He was very much opposed because he knew that Heifetz would insist that I stop giving concerts and at that time I was playing about eighty concerts a year. Judson - with some validity, I might add - felt that a career could not be stopped and restarted successfully.' Erick Friedman with his first teacher, Samuel Applebaum Born in 1939 in Newark, New Jersey, Eric (the final k was added later by Heifetz) Friedman was drawn to music early. 'I loved it. I was always listening to the radio, only to classical music. The only reason that I started to play the violin was because my father played it.' The elder Friedman, a musical amateur who played by ear, started the six-year-old Eric, who was big for his age, on a three-quarter sized instrument ('It was cheaper than a piano', his son recalls with a smile). His first teacher was Samuel Applebaum, - 'a warm and wonderful man who got me started' - whose son is the violist, Michael Tree.

8. The Violin-Playing Of Erick Friedman
Royal Poinciana Playhouse with a dynamic recital by veteran violinist erick friedman and piano prodigy Dimitris Sgouros.
http://www.stephenredrobe.com/More.htm
THE VIOLIN-PLAYING OF ERICK FRIEDMAN a technical analysis by Stephen Redrobe I write this as a technical analysis rather than as an essay in musical criticism mainly for the benefit of violinists and students of the violin. In reading the vast majority of published reviews of violin concerts and recordings, it often becomes immediately apparent that the writer is quite musically knowledgeable but has little understanding of the art of the sheer mechanics of violin playing. It can be most perplexing to see, for example , spiccato confused with sautillé, martélé with staccato, or saltato with ricochet. As the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein said "Whereof one knows nothing; thereof one should remain silent". I shall do my best to keep this in mind.
Background
As a student Mr Friedman was fortunate enough to have been the beneficiary of the finest training in the history of violin playing. Most violin aficionados willl be familiar with the Russian, Franco-Belgian and German "schools" of violin playing.. Mr Friedman studied in an environment which gave him the very best of all these "schools" yet he never studied in any of these countries. To best under stand this we have to go back to the early years of the twentieth century.

Erick Friedman (violin)

27 May 1998
This was a red-letter day for those who know about violin playing, as Erick Friedman hardly ever comes to London and is represented in the record catalogues only by a Tchaikovsky Concerto stemming from Eastern Europe. I found much of his playing - on a Joseph Curtin violin - absolutely ravishing in spite of certain puzzling aspects. Even with the imperturbable Gordon Back at the piano, the two sonatas in the first half- Brahms's G major and Beethoven's C minor - did not really cohere as interpretations, and there were patches of poor tuning in unexpected places. On the other hand, Friedman is the sort of player who can really dazzle you with the second subject of a sonata movement after throwing away the first. I enjoyed Debussy's Sonata more, and Ezra Laderman's Duo, dedicated to Friedman, came across well. Then suddenly the violinist put aside the music stand and became an artist of an altogether different colour for Saint- Saens's

Freidman was always reported to be bitter that the year he entered the Tchaikowsky competition they did not award a first place (and so he didn't get it.) Expressed the belief that it was political. throughout his career he was plagued by comments that he either imitated Heifetz (his teacher) or did not play like Heifetz. I read that he had been severely injured in an auto accident and lost the ability to play. I have since heard that he died (but I don't know). I also heard him in person once about 25 or 30 years ago doing the Brahms with a regional orchestra in central California. Violinist Erick Friedman, Professor at the Yale School of Music, was among the prominent musicians and scholars invited by UNESCO/International Music Council to participate in the international conference/festival "The Promotion of Local Music Heritage in the Age of Globalization." The event was held in Amman, Jordan, September 17-21. Joining Mr. Friedman were cellist Cecylia Barczyk, a Yale alumna (MM ’79) and Professor at Towson University, and the noted social scientist, Professor Charles K. Borowsky, a Yale alumnus (STM ’76) and President of the International Institute for Regional Studies.
Both Barczyk and Friedman gave master classes and performed as soloists with the Jordanian National Symphony Orchestra in the opening concert. Over 3,000 people were in attendance, among them the Jordanian royal family, Jordanian diplomats, and other cultural and business organizations from many continents. Cecylia Barczyk performed at the opening and concluding concert with the renowned pianist Krystian Zimmerman. Prof. Charles K. Borowsky was among the keynote speakers at this opening. He also held a seminar on the global communication of musical knowledge and was elected editor of the conference proceedings.

VIOLINIST, PIANIST END FESTIVAL'S CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES WITH STYLE
Sun Sentinel
; Fort Lauderdale; Apr 28, 1986 By: Tim Smith The Palm Beach Festival's delightful chamber music series ended in high style Saturday evening at the Royal Poinciana Playhouse with a dynamic recital by veteran violinist Erick Friedman and piano prodigy Dimitris Sgouros. The Greek pianist, who has been actively concertizing and recording since he was 13, possesses more than an assured technique. He has genuine flair and not a little interpretive depth that places him on a much higher level than the typical gifted youth. Now 16, Sgouros seems to understand fully the difference between playing notes and making music. That understanding served him extremely well in Liszt's B minor Sonata. I must confess a limited tolerance for this work, which usually sounds to my ears like the musical equivalent of an old windbag. But Sgouros managed to lessen the sonata's seemingly interminable length by means of his striking technique, vividly etched phrasing and potent ability to produce the necessary array of tone colors. It was an animated, penetrating performance. He was no less impressive in his role as accompanist for Friedman, especially in the bold and brilliant D minor Sonata for violin and piano by Saint-Saens. Sgouros was not content to be a second banana; he tackled the piano part with such gusto that there were times when Friedman hardly a shrinking violet was all but drowned out.
