Upon his arrival in the United States in 1980 Mr. Tseng was awarded a full scholarship at Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Erick Friedman and Glenn Dicterow. Mr. Tseng has won numerous top prizes at national and international competitions both here and abroad. In 1990, he received the award for best interpretation of a new composition at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, and three years later he triumphed at the Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition in Belgium by winning the Silver Medal. Among his other prizes are the ones at the North Carolina Symphony Artist Competition, New Jersey Symphony Artist Competition, and the Washington International String Competition. I also thought it was inappropriate to have a concert to do with me, given the magnitude of this event, and I thought this was rather an opportunity to share an artistic statement giving hope.” So the program for the November 4 concert presents instead the Randall Thomson a capella setting of the Allelluia , Brahms’ Nanie and Haydn’s Mass in Time of War “The point of pairing the Brahms and the Haydn together,” Hall explains, “is that the Brahms is a very personal reflection on the death of a friend. Biographies Jorja Fleezanis , violin Concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra since 1989. She was previously, for nine years, with the San Francisco Symphony, eight of them as associate concertmaster. Contemporary music is her passion (she premiered, among others, John Adams's violin concerto) and she often showcases music of our time. Fleezanis is a member of the University of Minnesota faculty and participates in numerous workshops all over the United States.She is also a member of the FOG trio with pianist Garrick Ohlsson and cellist Michael Grebanier. Erick Friedman , violin made his New York debut at the age of fourteen and at seventeen began studying with Jascha Heifetz, with whom he recorded the Bach Concerto for Two Violins. He has been soloist with orchestras of Boston, Chicago, London, New York, Dallas, Berlin and Philadelphia, and has performed under the batons of Steinberg, Sargent, Ozawa and Previn, among others. Mr. Friedman has been associated with the North Carolina School of the Arts, the Manhattan School, and Southern Methodist University. He joined the Yale School of Music faculty in 1989, and is Music Director and conductor for the Garrett Lakes Festival Orchestra in Maryland. Kevork Mardirossian , violin Mr. Mardirossian a graduate of the Sofia, Bulgaria Conservatory, he studied further with Arthur Grumiaux in Brussels, and with Yfrah Neaman in London at the Guildhall School. Classical LP Guide On this page you find brief reviews of some of my favourite LP:s. You will not find any discographies, I simply could not afford to buy that many records. One of the big advantages with LP:s is that they are cheap. An other advantage is that the sound quality is better, especially if you like me enjoy listening with headphones. With good ol' monaural recordings you avoid the exaggerated stereo-picture of most stereophonic recordings. Also the sound of LP:s is softer and more immediate. Lu C ellist Aldo Parisot, violinist Erick Friedman and pianist Elizabeth Sawyer Parisot have built impressive track records as performing artists. But over the years, they have also established their reputation as teachers at the Yale University. Many music students from Taiwan have sought to study with them. Kenneth Kuo, a talented former cello student at the Yale University, has convinced them to light up the Taiwan concert stage for a good cause. Proceeds will go to the victims of the Sept. 21 earthquake. Kuo, who now pursues an international music career, will also personally join them during performances on Jan. 18 at the National Tainan Teachers College, on Jan. 19 at the Chung Shan Hall in Taichung and on Jan. 23 at the National Concert Hall in Taipei. Aldo Parisot, a cellist who hailed originally from Brazil, arrived in America in 1946 and went on to build a concert artist's career, collaborating with orchestras of world renown. Violinist Erick Friedman studied with the Russian-born Jascha Heifetz. He described Heifetz as "the world's greatest violinist." According to him, Heifetz was "a man of extreme generosity and dedication, tremendously honest but not diplomatic."

In his case, rather than a green jacket or a trophy, Yale School of Music graduate Kuo's goal is to raise money for and awareness of victims of last September's deadly earthquake in his homeland. He will do so in a series of concerts there this week with three members of the school's faculty: Brazilian-born cellist and conductor Aldo Parisot; his wife, pianist Elizabeth Sawyer Parisot; and violinist Erick Friedman. With Taiwan's strong emphasis on classical music training and competition, Kuo said, Parisot and Friedman may be more revered there than in the United States. As well-known in classical music circles as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer are on the links, they are generating the kind of excitement there that a sports icon would stir up here, he said. "For the younger kids to see me as one of them - they really are legendary," said Kuo, 25, who has lived in the U.S. for 13 years and received his master of music degree from Yale last spring. "It's like a sports hero. I'm getting to play with the greatest living artists of our time."

Even more amazing, his fabulous talent was fully formed by the time of his first teenaged records, cut weeks after his sensational 1917 Carnegie Hall debut. Just listen to how effortlessly he tosses off Bazzini’s fiendishly difficult "Ronde des Lutins" with breakneck speed, staggering technique and attitude galore. In art, as in politics, radical youths mellow in middle age and gravitate toward a more conservative middle ground, but not Heifetz. Rather than embrace mellow maturity, Heifetz maintained throughout his half-century career the fleet precision of his initial fame. Most artists dream in vain of fending off technical decline. Heifetz, though, faced the opposite problem. Many violin devotees accuse Heifetz of never evolving a distinctive personal vision. Indeed, it has become fashionable to flail Heifetz for an emotional reticence at odds with the heart-on-sleeve style we normally expect of our fiddlers. But instead of damning him for what he wasn't (and never pretended to be), it seems far better to hail him for seizing upon a unique personality and never straying. Throughout his career, Heifetz projected his sensational technique and pure tone with affirmative athletic confidence. Even in his last performances, he sounds like the most youthful violinist on record.

GRAMOPHONE AWARD FOR RATTLE'S KING ROGER The December issue of the Gramophone informs about the triumph of Sir Simon Rattle, distinguished British conductor, whose recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 10 (in the Deryck Cooke performing edition) received the title of the Recording of the Year. Rattle's EMI set of King Roger was recognized as the best recording of opera and the third of Rattle's Szymanowski recordings to receive a Gramophone Award. During his acceptance speech, Rattle spoke about "his devotion to Szymanowski's music and how his Birmingham forces now felt Totally at home with the idiom." NEWS: PTASZYNSKA'S AWARDS, SUCCESSES, AND PREMIERES On October 29 Marta Ptaszynska received a very prestigious award given by the Polish Government for outstanding contributions to the Polish culture. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, W³adys³aw Bartoszewski, gave these awards during the ceremony in Warsaw, Poland. POST CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL FACULTY Harris Becker, guitar and lute Nam-Sook Choei Lee, violin Miriam Lockhart, clarinet Karla Moe, flute Karla Moe has an active career as both an orchestral flutist and chamber musician.  She plays with the New York City Opera, the American Ballet Theatre, EOS, the New York Virtuosi, the Long Island Philharmonic, the Colonial Symphony, and the New York Grand Opera Company and has also performed with the Mostly Mozart Festival and the American Symphony.  She has been principal flutist with the Dance Theatre of Harlem, and the Musica Aeterna Chamber Orchestra, which performed an acclaimed series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  She has played for such conductors as James Levine, Kurt Masur and Leonard Bernstein.  She is currently the flutist in the baroque chamber ensemble, The Queen’s Chamber Band.  In addition to being on the adjunct faculty of C. W. Post, she frequently teaches for the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division and the Juilliard Music Advancement Program. She plays in many of the Broadway orchestras, including Aida and the Lion King .  A graduate of St. Olaf College in Minnesota, Ms. Moe received a Master’s degree in performance from the Manhattan School of Music in NYC.
