With performance venues ranging from the concert stage to soup kitchens and from presidential inaugurals to juvenile correctional facilities, the Marian Anderson String Quartet continues to uphold its mission to create new and diverse audiences for the field of chamber music. On September 30,1989 the members of the Marian Anderson String Quartet came together, unaware that they would soon change history. At that time the ensemble was known as the Chaminade Quartet and in 1991 had gone on to win the International Cleveland Quartet Competition; becoming the first African American ensemble in history to win a classical music competition. To highlight their singular achievement, the members of the Quartet asked the permission of the great contralto, Marian Anderson, to use her name as the new name of their group. Miss Anderson responded with heartfelt approval. In a memorable show of thanks the Anderson quartet played for its legendary namesake and her nephew, the conductor James DePriest. The Marian Anderson String Quartet's artistic endeavors have brought them to such venues as New York City's Alice Tully Hall, the Corcoran Gallery, the Library of Congress, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Kilbourn Hall, the University of Southern California and the Chateau Cantanac-Brown (Bordeaux, France). The Quartet's distinguished history includes performances through the Da Camera Society, the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Mr. Tseng has won numerous top prizes at nation and international competition in the U.S. among them are the North Carolina Symphony Artist Competition, and the Washington International String Competition. In 1990 he received the award for best interpretation of a new composition at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and in 1993 won the Silver Medal at the Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition in Belgium. Mr. Tseng has performed in recital and as soloist with orchestras throughout the U.S., Europe, Central and south America, the Far East, Including the National Orchestra of Belgium, Noordholan Philharmonic, Koninklijk Philharmonic Orrkest van Vlaanderen, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Simon Bolivar Orquesta Sinfonica, Tibilisi Symphony Orchestra and the Taiwan Symphony, among others. "The most nearly perfect violinist of his time" The story of Nathan Milstein by Loke Hoe-Yeong Nathan Milstein (1903 - 1992) was called the "prince of the violin" (and at one time, the "prince of the bow"). Harold Schonberg, in his obituary of Milstein published in The New York Times , wrote his famous line, "He could well have been the most nearly perfect violinist of his time". However, the name Milstein is rarely mentioned or known among the music-listening public. Which is a sad thing considering the esteem and admiration professional violinists and musicians alike then and now hold for him. But this problem can be easily explained; Milstein was a not "commercial" musician who could "sell". Rather, he was repelled by the demands of celebrity and never indulged much in publicity. The little-known fact is that Milstein's career is the longest ever in the history of violin playing - 72 years, from his official debut playing the Glazunov concerto with the composer conducting(!) in 1915, to his final concert in 1987 playing the Beethoven concerto with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf. Some time after his final concert, the violinist broke his arm, bring his career to an abrupt halt. A pity, considering that the healthy musician's career could have been ever longer!

Preben spent a year experimenting with the piano when he was five, enjoying making up music for his many imaginary countries. He learned to notate music by poring over the family piano collection, as well as his sister's violin pieces. He began regular piano and composition lessons with Molly Axtmann when he was six, and at seven began studying violin with Debbra Wood Schwartz. He presently studies composition with Ms. Axtmann and piano with James Chip Brimhall, and has recently begun studying with John Adams. Season 2000 Overview (printable version) T he Newport Music Festival 2000 will celebrate its 32 nd season July 7-23, continuing its tradition of presenting unique chamber music programs, American debuts, world-class artists and special events in the grand “summer cottages” of Newport, Rhode Island. Beginning his second quarter century as General Director, Dr. Mark P. Malkovich, III researches and selects works from the 19 th century chamber music, vocal repertoire and the Romantic-era piano literature, to create one of the most extraordinary festivals in the world. In its thirty-one year history, the Newport Music Festival has become celebrated for presenting over one hundred artists and ensembles in their American debuts. The Festival will present sixty-one concerts—three, four and even five per day—in Newport’s famed mansions with over seventy artists from around the world participating. The Yamaha Corporation of America, Time Magazine and Champagne Louis Roederer continue as the major Festival sponsors. American Express has been added to that prestigious list.
