Classical Notes The Violinist of the Century by Peter Gutmann Please click here for an important March 2001 update (new Naxos budget series of Heifetz concerti) He was universally acclaimed as the violinist of the century. But for many, that wasn't enough. Even his harshest detractors had to admit that Jascha Heifetz (1900 - 1987) had the greatest technique in history (and the few recordings of his concerts prove that his precision wasn't a studio fabrication). Even more amazing, his fabulous talent was fully formed by the time of his first teenaged records, cut weeks after his sensational 1917 Carnegie Hall debut. Just listen to how effortlessly he tosses off Bazzini's fiendishly difficult "Ronde des Lutins" with breakneck speed, staggering technique and attitude galore. The Artist and the Critics In art, as in politics, radical youths mellow in middle age and gravitate toward a more conservative middle ground, but not Heifetz. Rather than embrace mellow maturity, Heifetz maintained throughout his half-century career the fleet precision of his initial fame. Most artists dream in vain of fending off technical decline. Heifetz, though, faced the opposite problem. Many violin devotees accuse Heifetz of never evolving a distinctive personal vision. Indeed, it has become fashionable to flail Heifetz for an emotional reticence at odds with the heart-on-sleeve style we normally expect of our fiddlers. But instead of damning him for what he wasn't (and never pretended to be), it seems far better to hail him for seizing upon a unique personality and never straying. Throughout his career, Heifetz projected his sensational technique and pure tone with affirmative athletic confidence. Even in his last performances, he sounds like the most youthful violinist on record.

Conductor Daniel Barenboim, who created a firestorm of controversy when he performed an encore of Richard Wagner, July 7, at the Israel Festival, has told a German magazine that he wants to perform in his adopted country again.
When asked by Bunte magazine if he would like to perform in Israel, the Argentina-born Barenboim (who is Jewish and grew up much of his life in Israel) said, "I have no problem with it."
There could be a problem however, given that a committee of the Israeli parliament voted in July to institute a ban on the conductor in retaliation for his Wagner performance, essentially declaring him persona non grata. For the past fifty years and more, there has been an unofficial Israeli ban on the works of Wagner, who has been called Hitler's favorite composer.
Continuing the same line of defense he has pursued since the controversy over his performance with the Berlin Staatskapelle orchestra erupted, Barenboim said that the ban on Wagner's music in Israel (in deference to the feelings of Holocaust survivors) goes against the very principals of democracy and freedom of expression. While he said that he understands those feelings he reiterated that "[the survivors] can't forbid Wagner for others that have no problem with it." 16 August 2001 RW Deutsch

Vardi, the Viola and I
by Scott Slapin
Emanuel Vardi was born in Jerusalem on April 21, 1917. He studied violin with his father and later with Constance Seeger (the mother of folk-singer Pete) and Edward Dethier at the Institute of Musical Art in New York City. Vardi later studied painting at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1951 he took main prize at the international art exhibition in Rapallo.
Vardi has appeared as soloist with numerous top orchestras of the world, and has given countless solo recitals. In 1942 Vardi was named 'Recitalist for the Year' for a recital he gave at Town Hall. Vardi is a former member of the Stuyvesant and the Guilet quartets, and his career as a conductor brought him to become the conductor of the South Dakota Symphony for several years.
Among Vardi's compositions are a film score for 'The Diary of Anne Frank', a violin concerto for David Nadien (former concert-master of the NY Philharmonic) and several works featuring the viola. Works for Vardi have been written by Barab, Brant, Colgrass, Gould, Hovhaness, Jones, Kleinsinger, Lane, May and Shulman.
At the age of twelve, my parents brought me to play for Mr. Vardi at his home in New York State. He was nearly seventy at the time. He agreed to take me on as a student, and taught me for about five years until I graduated from the Manhattan School of Music.

Mondre Moffett, Steve Kirby and Delfeayo Marsalis (left to right) demonstrate their techniques in a master class at the Center for Jazz Studies during the International FAME Festival.
A divinity Mr. Moffett is not, though to those gifted few he spends time with each summer, his expertise feels like divine intervention. A renowned jazz trumpeter and former band leader at the famed Blue Note Club in New York City, Mr. Moffett dedicates two weeks of his life each year to provide guidance to the musically aspiring.
International FAME Festival concert series, featuring faculty and student concerts at the Lawrenceville School July 25-Aug. 7.
"I get letters all year from the week at camp," says Mr. Moffett, who lives in West Orange. "They write me with problems: 'I'm playing in the jazz band, I'm taking this solo and I think the key is B flat. I play this note and I think it's a blues structure — what should I do?' So, I write back, 'Well, think rhythmically.' It's gratifying when you feel like you're making a contribution and really helping." Donald Harrison is one of the many talented jazz musicians performing at the FAME Festival in Lawrenceville this week.

Arranged by Ralph Gatton, this special Iowa appearance took place in the vintage 30's 200 seat Pioneer Theater with two shows at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Gatemouth and the band Gate's Express cooked out a heaping helping of blues, swing, big band, and country which kept the crowd clapping and tapping their feet. I was glad to be able to assist Ralph with the rental of some sound equipment through Rieman Music.
