Review: Conductor brings new excitement to KSO By Harold Duckett, Special to The News-Sentinel
November 8, 2002
If David Allen Miller is as good at the music director job as he was as conductor of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra Thursday night, the Tennessee Theatre could become an exciting place on concert nights. Across the scope of the three works on the program, there was not a single passage that was allowed to just somnambulate. There was excitement from the musicians and the audience. Beginning with the suite from Virgil Thomson's ballet, "Filling Station," which Miller had chosen for the concert, followed by violinist Vadim Gluzman's superb playing of Max Bruch's "Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor" and concluding with a driving performance of Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 5 in E Minor," the KSO played with an edge-of-the-seat energy. Although none of the pieces presented the regimentation of classical works, or the ephemera of impressionism, there was still a breadth to the readings that firmly indicated that one was not seeing everything Miller has to offer, a critical quality if a conductor is to endure and stimulate for the long haul.

Cellist Warner finally makes ESO debut
by Bill Gowen, Daily Herald
It may be a year late, but cellist Wendy Warner will finally have an opportunity to share her artistry with the musicians of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra next weekend. Warner will play Antonin Dvorak's B Minor Concerto in the ESO's Classic Series under the baton of associate conductor Stephen Squires. The concerts are at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 1, 8 p.m. Feb. 2 and 3:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Hemmens Theatre, 150 Dexter Court, Elgin. Squires will also conduct "Ride of the Valkyries" from Richard Wagner's "Die Walkure," Alberto Ginastera's "Variaciones Concertantes" and the famous Richard Strauss tone poem, "Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks." So, why is it "better late than never" for Wendy Warner? The answer is simple: a hand injury forced her to cancel the bulk of her 2000-2001 concert engagements, including her ESO debut. "There was a ligament that was swollen in my right hand," she said. "The doctors don't really know what caused it; I just needed to give it some rest. I started playing again last June." Now fully healed, the injury did not require surgery.
