Concert at Carnegie Hall celebrates students and teachers of music in memory of Niles Nagel What do students in Sussex County, New Jersey have in common with those in Sussex, England, as well as many other places? Well, they are especially dedicated with devoted parents and teachers who work especially hard to make it possible for them to make beautiful music in great places, like one of the most famous one of the most extraordinary stages in the world Carnegie Hall in New York City. These are not prodigies, but they are learning and using the discipline of music to accomplish what will be a truly meaningful and memorable event in their lives. The New Jersey Ambassadors of Music and the Sussex County Youth Orchestras, under the musical direction of Dawn Tedesco, presented a concert to celebrate the contribution that music students and teachers make to our musical culture. The concert was held at the famed and revered Carnegie Hall on Monday, June 28, 1999.

USM's Faculty Concert Series on Oct. 1
Part of the Celebrate the Arts at USM in Gorham! weekend Celebrating his 10th year with the Department of Music at the University of Southern Maine, violinist Lawrence Golan will perform in the opening concert of the 1999-2000 Faculty Concert Series at USM.
This concert is sponsored by ARAMARK.
Golan, who is director of string studies at USM and concertmaster of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, will be joined by pianist Martin Perry. The two will perform four works for piano and violin beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, October 1, 1999, in Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham campus
The program begins with Johannes Brahms' Sonata No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78 . During summers in the late 1870's Brahms vacationed in the lakefront town of Pvrtschach where he wrote some of his greatest works. One of them was this romantic gem, the first of three sonatas for violin and piano to be published by the composer.
Antonin Dvorak's Romance follows, before intermission. This work was originally the slow movement of the F Minor string quartet written in 1873. Dvorak re-orchestrated the piece for violin solo with piano or orchestral accompaniment in 1877. The beautiful solo line and its interwoven accompaniment within the melancholy harmonies make it one of the most introspective and stirring pieces in the repertoire.

George Perlman Dies In Chicago
George Perlman with the Golans
photo by Judith Golan George Perlman violinist and composer, taught for 74 years until two months before his death on June 23, 2000, at age 103. For much of his life he taught 60 hours a week, plus performing in concerts, composing works played around the world and editing violin music for Carl Fischer . He retired from teaching on April 15th of this year. He joked that he had come to the Fine Arts Building at 410 S. Michigan , where he had his teaching studio, "just before the flood, the one in the Bible." In fact, the Fine Arts Building, considered an historic Chicago landmark, is only a few years older than he was, having been built in 1885. He was born on May 15, 1897, in the Ukraine , where generations of his family had been rabbis . He was 4 when his parents immigrated to Chicago. His principal teachers were Leon Samatini, Adolph Weidig; he also studied for a year with the great Leopold Auer Perlman studied law at Northwestern and DePaul Universities, earning his doctorate in law at DePaul. He joined a law office in 1927, while also teaching at the Fine Arts Building, but soon abandoned law to perform and teach.
